'Or lions,' said Hugh, jumping up and running to the window, where he flattened his nose to stare into the night. 'I wish it were lions coming over the Downs.' 'What would you do with them?' said Hobb, smiling broadly. 'I never heard tell of lions of those colours,' said Hobb. 'But perhaps Ambrose has with all his reading.' 'Not I,' said Ambrose, 'but I haven't read half the books yet. The wind still knows more than I, and it may be that he knows where red and white lions are to be found. For he knows everything.' 'And has seen everything,' murmured Heriot, watching a lovely flame of blue-and-green that flickered among the red-and-gold on the hearth. 'And has been everywhere,' muttered Hugh. 'If I could find and catch him, I'd ask him for a red and a white lion.' 'I'd rather have peacocks,' said Heriot, his eyes on the fire.

"The Mill of Dreams." by Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965)
From: Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard
THE MILL OF DREAMS
THERE was once, dear maidens, a girl who lived in a mill on the Sidlesham marshes. But in those days the marshlands were meadowlands, with streams running in from the coast, so that their water was brackish and salt. And sometimes the girl dipped her finger in the water and sucked it and tasted the sea. And the taste made storms rise in her heart. Her name was Helen. The mill-house was a gaunt and gloomy building of stone, as grey as sleep, weather-stained with dreams. It had fine proportions, and looked like a noble prison. And in fact, if a prison is the lock-house of secrets, it was one. The great millstones ground day and night, and what the world sent in as corn it got back as flour. And as to the secrets of the grinding it asked no questions, because to the world results are everything. It understands death better than sorrow, marriage better than love, and birth better than creation. And the millstones of joy and pain, grinding dreams into bread, it seldom hears. But Helen heard them, and they were all the knowledge she had of life; for if the mill was a prison of dreams it was her prison too. Her father the miller was a harsh man and dark; he was dark within and without. Her mother was dead; she did not remember her. As she grew up she did little by little the work of the big place. She was her father's servant, and he kept her as close to her work as he kept his millstones to theirs. He was morose, and welcomed no company. Gaiety he hated. Helen knew no songs, for she had heard none. From morning till night she worked for her father. When she had done all her other work she spun flax into linen for shirts and gowns, and wool for stockings and vests. If she went outside the millhouse, it was only for a few steps for a few moments. She wasn't two miles from the sea, but she had never seen it. But she tasted the salt water and smelt the salt wind.

In the 9 th C., a series of seven Advent Antiphons were sung at Vespers during the week before Christmas. Each Antiphon began with the word "O", followed by a Biblical title for Christ. In the 12 th or 13 th C., an unknown poet chose five of these Antiphons and added a refrain based on Zechariah 9:9, thus yielding " O Come, O Come Emmanuel ." This text first appeared in Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum , 1710, in Latin, and subsequently in Medieval Hymns and Sequences , 1851, in English. After years of speculation, it has been determined that the origin of the tune VENI EMMANUEL is from a 15 th C. Processional used by a group of French Franciscan nuns. It was adapted as a hymn tune by Thomas Helmore (1811-1890), the son of an English Congregational minister. George Frideric Handel's (1685-1759) beloved oratorio Messiah was composed between August 22-September 14, 1741, an incredibly short time for such a lengthy composition (3 hours performance time.) It was premiered to an appreciative audience at a charity concert in Dublin on April 13, 1742, with Handel conducting. On March 23, 1743, it was premiered in London to mixed reviews, as some clergy and society matrons deemed the use of theatrical singers for a sacred work to be totally inappropriate. It wasn't until 1750 that Messiah performances became a popular annual event.

Larry Marietta's Music Notes from Sunday Morning Services at FCCB
THIS MORNING'S MUSIC for Sunday, November 30, 1997 The origin of the bagpipe is unknown, but musicologists surmise that it may have initially come from the Sumerian Plain. References to its use exist in drawings and writings from ancient Greece and Rome. English museums have cylindrical wooden-bore pipes from c. 915 AD, and references to drone pipes exist from writings of the later 13 C. At the time of Henry VIII, the popular use of the bagpipe moved from England northward to Ireland and Scotland. Today in Scotland four types of bagpipe exist in common use: the highland pipe, the lowland pipe, the hybrid lowland pipe and the small-pipe. The highland pipe, the kind which David Chambers plays this morning, has been a Scottish martial instrument since the 1500's. It consists of a sheepskin bag into which are tied five stocks, accommodating the blowpipe (mouthpiece), chanter (melody) and three drones. Its performance requires considerable physical stamina and exceptional finger dexterity. "People, Look East" was written by Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965), an English author noted for her children's nursery rhymes and singing games. It first appeared in Part Three of "Modern Texts Written for or Adapted to Traditional Tunes," for the
