Ralph Waldo Emerson
One of America's most original and influential thinkers, Emerson began his career as a minister. Soon he began to feel his personal beliefs conflicted with the doctrines of his church, and he resigned and turned to writing and lecturing. Instrumental in shaping the ideas of a group of writers know as the Transcendentals, Emerson's ideas, especially his doctrine of "Self Reliance," are still part of our life today.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Emerson is a critic, poet, philosopher, with talent not so conspicuous, not so adequate to his task; but his field is still higher, his task more arduous. Lives a far more intense life; seeks to realize a divine life; his affections and intellect equally developed. Has advanced farther, and a new heaven opens to him. Love and Friendship, Religion, Poetry, the Holy are familiar to him. The life of an Artist; more variegated, more observing, finer perception; not so robust, elastic; practical enough in his field; faithful, a judge of men. There is no such general critic of men and things, no such trustworthy and faithful man. More of the divine realized in him than in any."

http://www.els.org/emerson.html
Ralph Waldo Emerson HOME Emerson is the chief figure in the American literary movement called Transcendentalism, which was also a philosophical and religious movement. Transcendentalism is complex, drawing upon Platonic, Christian, Stoic, and Hindu thought, but its most immediate affinity is with German Idealism as worked out from Kant to Schelling. Indeed Emerson himself said in a lecture called "The Transcendentalist," delivered in December 1841, "What is popularly called Transcendentalism among us, is Idealism." He then described it: "As thinkers, mankind have ever divided into two sects, Materialists and Idealists; the first class founding on experience, the second on consciousness; the first class beginning to think from the data of the senses, the second class perceive that the senses are not final, and say, the senses gives us representations of things, but what are the things themselves, they cannot tell. The materialist insists on facts, on history, on the force of circumstances, and the animal wants of man; the idealist on the power of Thought and of Will, on inspiration, on miracle, on individual culture." Materialist criticism focuses on facts, on literary history, on the life and mind of the author and his or her intention, and on the text itself. Emerson's ethical and idealist criticism concentrates almost entirely upon the reader and his or her response to a text. Emerson is mainly concerned not with the fact of literary history but with the uses of literature, with its effects on the reader, and its power or lack of power to move us.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
Biography The central figure in a group of nineteenth-century Boston thinkers known as the Transcendentalists, Emerson was the son of a Unitarian minister who died when Emerson was eight years old. His mother ran boardinghouses to put her sons though school: Emerson graduated from Harvard in 1821, and then, after studying theology, he was ordained a pastor in 1829. Though he enjoyed delivering sermons, Emerson's faith in Christianity began to waver as he came under the influence of German philosophers and the British Romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge; after he lost belief in the rites of the Last Supper, he resigned from his church in 1831. His wife, Ellen Tucker, died tragically young from tuberculosis, leaving Emerson a legacy that allowed him to spend the rest of his life traveling, lecturing, and writing. Nature (1836), a major contribution to American Romanticism and Transcendentalism, appeared anonymously and was favorably received among his friends. Not until the publication of Essays (1841) was Emerson confirmed as a dominant presence in American letters. To this day, his influence on American writers, from
