Ralph Waldo Emerson
Emerson, Ralph Waldo (1803-1882), American essayist and poet, a leader of the philosophical movement of transcendentalism. Influenced by such schools of thought as English romanticism, Neoplatonism, and Hindu philosophy (see Hinduism), Emerson is noted for his skill in presenting his ideas eloquently and in poetic language. Emerson applied these ideas to cultural and intellectual problems in his 1837 lecture "The American Scholar," which he delivered before the Phi Beta Kappa Society of Harvard. In it he called for American intellectual independence. A second address, commonly referred to as the "Address at Divinity College," delivered in 1838 to the graduating class of Cambridge Divinity College, aroused considerable controversy because it attacked formal religion and argued for self-reliance and intuitive spiritual experience.

Essays . Boston: James Monroe and Company, 1841. Emerson's essays, the most famous of which is "Self-Reliance," are unique not only in American literature but also in the English language. No series of essays ever exerted so much influence or enjoyed such long popularity as Emerson's moral discussions of ideals and human conduct. The quality of each essay are timeless and universal, but contain the New England spirit that was so much a part of Emerson's character. A second series of essays, published in 1844, forms a continuation of the first series. The copy exhibited is the first edition of the first series of essays, bound in brown cloth.

In 1829, he married Ellen Tucker. Tragically, she died just 17 months later. Emerson moved to Concord, Massachusetts. His first published work, Nature (1836) described the outlines of his belief in transcendentalism.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
was born on May 25, 1803 in Boston, Massachusetts. He is widely regarded as one of America's most influential authors, philosophers and thinkers. At one time a Unitarian minister, Emerson left his pastorate because of doctrinal disputes with his superiors. Soon after, on a trip to Europe, he met a number of intellectuals, including Thomas Carlyle and William Wordsworth. The ideas of these men, along with those of Plato and some of the Hindu, Buddhist, and Persian thinkers, strongly influenced his development of the philosophy of "Transcendentalism" . In 1836 Emerson expressed Transcendentalism's main principle of the "mystical unity of nature" in his essay, "Nature" Emerson urged independent thinking and stressesd that not all life's answers are found in books. In his "The American Scholar" address to the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Cambridge in 1837 Emerson states that: "Books are the best of things, well used; abused, among the worst."

The sun set, but set not his hope:
Stars rose; his faith was earlier up:
Fixed on the emormous galaxy,
Deeper and older seemed his eye;
And matched his sufferance sublime
The taciturnity of time.
He spoke, and words more soft than rain
Brought the Age of Gold again:
His action won such reverance sweet As hid all measure of the feat.

II. RALPH WALDO EMERSON: 1803-82
Ralph Waldo Emerson came of the academic class. His ancestors for five generations had been scholars and most of them had been ministers. His father, William Emerson, minister of the First Church in Boston , was a man of good sense, dignified after the manner of the old New England type, and emphatic in the expression of his views. The mother of Ralph Waldo was known for her patience, her gentle courtesy, her quiet dignity and serenity of spirit. Among the early companionships of the household, there was another which had a lasting influence in the development of Emerson's character , that of an aunt, Mary Moody Emerson, whose strong intellectuality was of the sort which distinguished Emerson himself.
Home Atmosphere.
Ralph Waldo Emerson was born May 25, 1803, in the parsonage on Summer Street, in Boston, not far from the house in which Franklin was born almost a century before. His boyhood was passed in an atmosphere of intellectuality and of literary effort. In 1804, the Rev. William Emerson organized what was known as the Anthology Club, and edited a publication of the club, the Monthly Anthology , or Magazine of Polite Literature . The circle of contributors included John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster and much scholarly talent. The famous
