Mary Baker Eddy (1821 - 1910)
Mary Baker Eddy was the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist. She was one of the most important religious leaders of the 19th century. Her work, Science and Health , has affected the lives of thousands, and the newspaper she founded at the end of her life, the Christian Science Monitor , has a reputation as one of the world’s fairest and most honest papers. The teachings of Mary Baker Eddy continue to influence the lives of people throughout the world. As a child and young adult, Mary Baker suffered from chronic ill health, was very delicate, and had a nervous temperament. While suffering from an illness in 1862, she visited Dr. Phineas P. Quimby in Portland, Maine and was cured by his method of "mind cure." Dr. Quimby was trained in hypnotism, and used this and careful talking to his patients about their illness to effect cures. It is one aspect of present day psychological counseling. Mary spent some time studying with Quimby, taking notes, and preparing what later became the basis for her life work. In 1875 she published Science and Health.

Mary Baker Eddy
Click Here to go Back to the Religion Page She is the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist . Eddy was born in Bow, New Hampshire. She received most of her early education at home from her brother, and began a lifelong study of the Bible. Widowed shortly after her marriage to George W. Glover in 1843. She married two more times: in 1853 to an itinerant dentist, whom she divorced 20 years later, and in 1877 to Asa Eddy, a follower of her new religion. Before founding Christian Science, Eddy was convinced that the Bible's accounts of healing held promise for a cure health problems; she also explored popular curative systems. Due to her own poor health, she consulted Phineas Quimby in 1862, a mental healer who restored her health temporarily. Eddy eventually rejected Quimby's healing method, because she came to believe that healing came through the power of God, not the human mind. She attributed this belief, and the discovery of Christian Science, to the spiritual revelation she claimed to have had while reading the Bible in 1866 after suffering severe injuries from a fall. She believed that her quick recovery, and the restoration of her health in general, resulted from her understanding of the spiritual truths that formed the basis of Jesus' healing ministry. Eddy spent the remainder of her life studying and teaching her doctrine and founding the Church of Christ, Scientist. During the 1870s she taught her religious system in Lynn, Massachusetts. In 1875 the first version of her most important book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures", was published. In 1879 she obtained a charter for the Church of Christ, Scientist. She opened the Massachusetts Metaphysical College in Boston in 1882 to provide training in her doctrine; the college was closed in 1889 and was later replaced by the church's Board of Education.

History of the Church:
Mrs. Eddy (as she is referred to by church members) was a student-associate of Quimby until his death in 1866. Her health initially improved under his care, but she later suffered a relapse. Shortly afterwards, she fell on an icy sidewalk and severely injured herself. Some did not expect her to survive. On what she believed to be her deathbed, she read one of Jesus' healings. She suddenly realized that healing comes not from internal bodily processes, or from the power of a person's mind, but from the Divine Mind, God. She was instantly cured! Mrs. Eddy withdrew from society for three years in order to concentrate on a deep search through the Bible and discover precisely how her healing had taken place. She wished to share this knowledge with others, and to give them the tools to take away sin and achieve health. Mrs. Eddy then wrote her main book, Science and Health , later called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures . The book has since been published in 17 languages, and is available in English Braille, on audio cassette, CD, and in software packages.

Wer war Mary Baker Eddy?
Mary Baker Eddy (1821 – 1910) wuchs im US–Bundesstaat New Hampshire auf.

At the turn of the 20th century, the popular magazine Human Life reported that Mary Baker Eddy was “the most famous, interesting, and powerful woman in America, if not the world.” The daughter of a New Hampshire farming family, she overcame many obstacles to become an acclaimed author, publisher, and religious leader whose legacy is still being felt today. In 1995, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame for “making an indelible mark on society, religion, and journalism.”
A woman ahead of her time, Mary Baker Eddy (1821 – 1910) pioneered new ideas about spirituality and health. Her research and experience led her to the discovery of a system of healing that she named Christian Science. She wrote and published a book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , that broke new ground in the understanding of mind, body, spirit relationships. She went on to found a college, a church, a publishing enterprise, and The Christian Science Monitor – one of the most respected newspapers in the world.
Today, Mary Baker Eddy’s ideas about the link between spirituality and healing are as current as ever. Modern research by physicians and scientists reflects many of her insights into the mental and spiritual basis of health and wellness. Her book
