Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was an influential American author, teacher, and religious leader, noted for her groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health, which she named Christian Science. She articulated those ideas in her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures , first published in 1875. Four years later she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, which today has branch churches and societies around the world. In 1908 she launched The Christian Science Monitor , a leading international newspaper, the recipient, to date, of seven Pulitzer Prizes. Born on a farm in Bow, New Hampshire, she was the youngest of Mark and Abigail Baker's six children. Her formal education was interrupted by periods of sickness, but when not in school she read and studied extensively at home, writing prose and poetry from an early age. Her parents sought help from physicians for her ailments, but the treatments brought only temporary relief. Raised in a deeply religious Congregational home, she rebelled against the Calvinist doctrine of predestination at an early age, and regularly turned to the Bible and prayer for hope and inspiration. In December 1843, Mary Baker married a promising young building contractor, George Washington Glover, moving with him to the Carolinas. He died the following June, three months before the birth of their son, George. She found shelter and support for herself and the boy back in her parents' New Hampshire home until her mother's death in late 1849. In 1850, still suffering from recurring bouts of illness and no longer having her mother's help, she found she had no choice but to place George in the care of the family's former nurse and her husband.

The house at 400 Beacon St. is associated with Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Christian Scientists. The story is told that when 86-year old author and reformer Mary Baker Eddy first saw her new home at 400 Beacon Street in January of 1908, she wept. This large stone mansion on the edge of Boston was a departure from Eddy's humble New Hampshire roots, and it dwarfed the house in Lynn, MA where she completed her major work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. But by 1908, circulation of Eddy's book had reached nearly a half-million copies, and she had become pastor of her own church, president of a teaching college, and founder of a publishing house. One reporter of the the time wrote that Eddy "is without doubt one of the most remarkable women in America" Today, visitors to this well-preserved residence will sense the vitality of thought that characterized the last three years of Eddy's life. It was here, at age 87, that Eddy conceived and set in motion the publication of an international newspaper, the now famous Christian Science Monitor.

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910), the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, is widely recognized outside her Church as one of the most remarkable religious figures of modern times.
Her Early Years
She was born in New England on a farm in Bow, New Hampshire. Her childhood and much of her adult life, before 1866, was spent in ill health. Although raised with Puritan values, daily Bible reading, and even the talk of God's healing power, she spent many years looking for healing in the many remedial methods available in her time. She found no permanent help there.
Her Discovery
In 1866, she was healed of a serious injury as she read the account of one of Jesus' healings in the New Testament. This led her to discover what she came to understand as the Science of Christianity, which she named Christian Science.
Her Writings
In 1875, she first wrote and published Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,

Eddy, Mary Baker 1821-1910, founder of the Christian Science movement, b. Bow, N.H. As physical frailty prevented her regular school attendance, she spent the early part of her education learning at home from her brother Albert Baker. She later attended Holmes Academy at Plymouth and Sanbornton Academy. At a young age she published poetry and prose in periodicals. Widowed six months after her marriage to George W. Glover and responsible for their child (also named George W. Glover), she spent nine years among relatives, teaching at times and often in ill health. Married in 1853 to Daniel Patterson, a dentist, she lived in the country for some time, and later moved to Lynn, Mass. Having heard of the success in mental healing of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby , she went in 1862 to Portland, Maine. She received benefit from his treatment and became his pupil, but began to harbor doubts about Quimby's concept of mind as spiritual matter and his hostility to religion. In 1866 she separated from her husband; she later (1873) obtained a divorce. The year 1866 marks the actual beginning of Christian Science as she apprehended it. In the ensuing years, she refined the doctrine and plans for her new church. In 1875, she published the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health (later Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures ). She remarried for the last time in 1877, to Asa Gilbert Eddy, an active Christian Scientist. She founded the

Mary Baker Eddy Mary Baker Eddy, born in rural New England in the 1800's, overcame many hurdles to become an acclaimed author, publisher, and religious leader whose impact is still being felt today. In 1995, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame for “making an indelible mark on society, religion, and journalism.” How did this independent New England woman rise from obscurity to become, as Human Life magazine described in 1907, "the most famous, interesting and powerful woman in America, if not the world, today"?
Eddy (1821-1910) was born and raised on a farm near Concord, New Hampshire, in the United States. Because of many bouts of illness, she received most of her education at home, sometimes with the help her brother, Albert, a student at Dartmouth College. This turned out to be an advantage, given the many restrictions on women’s education in 19th century America.
She experienced some difficult years as a young woman. She was widowed (and pregnant) six months into her first marriage. Some six years later, her family, thinking her rambunctious son was too taxing for her, removed him from her and sent him to live with foster parents. Hoping to regain a stable home life for herself and her son, she married again, but eventually divorced her unfaithful second husband. In poor health during much of this time, she experimented with allopathic medicine and alternative therapies particularly with homeopathy. She was seeking an understanding of the relationship between mind, body, and spirit. Simultaneously, she continued a life-long study of the Bible searching to uncover its promise of spiritual healing.

In 1866, at age 44, in what marked a turning point, she was healed of a life-threatening accident through spiritual insights gained from the Bible. Over the next few years, she studied the Scriptures deeply, looking for a spiritual system behind the healing works of Christ Jesus. She tested what she was learning by healing other people, including some considered medically incurable. She also taught others to heal using this system, which she later called "Christian Science." She called it "Science" because she saw it as the provable, universal laws of God.

Mary Baker Eddy exhibit scheduled at New Mexico State University Library
A touring exhibit telling the life story of 19th century thinker and reformer Mary Baker Eddy will be installed at the New Mexico State University Library in October. The exhibit, titled “‘This is woman’s hour …’ The Life of Mary Baker Eddy,” will be available for public viewing on the second-floor balcony of Branson Library Oct. 1-12. Created by The Writings of Mary Baker Eddy organization of Boston, the exhibit is a smaller version of a large multi-media exhibit that was first shown at the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y. The large exhibit, being shown in September and October at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, has been traveling throughout the United States since 1998. Mary Baker Eddy lived 1821-1910. She was part of the women’s reform movement challenging mainstream thinking in regards to health-care and religion, and proved through her life that a woman could be a thinker and an entrepreneur. She is best known for founding The Christian Science Monitor and as the author of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. The exhibit portrays Eddy as a healer, thinker and reformer. Her unexpected recovery from an accident provided the impetus for her pioneering work in mind-body healing. As a thinker, along with certain other women of her generation such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, she questioned the subordinate role of women in American society. As a reformer, she lectured, published, and founded a church, a college and a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper.

    Mary Baker Eddy
Founder of the religious faith known as Christian Science, 1821-1910
The age looks steadily to the redressing of wrong, to the righting of every form of error and injustice; and a tireless and prying philanthropy, which is almost omniscient, is one of the most hopeful characteristics of the time. Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind. Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love. It is unselfish; therefore it cannot exist alone, but requires all mankind to share it. Audible prayer can never do the works of spiritual understanding, which regenerates; but silent prayer, watchfulness, and devout obedience enable us to follow Jesus example. Long prayers, superstition, and creeds clip the strong pinions of Love, and clothe Religion in human forms. Whatever materializes worship hinders man's spiritual growth and keeps him from demonstrating his power over error. The feminist perspective of historian Gillian Gill (author of a previous biography of Agatha Christie) adds three-dimensionality to the life story of the controversial, charismatic founder of Christian Science. Neither unblemished saint nor unscrupulous manipulator, Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) emerges in this substantive reassessment as a powerful woman so constrained by conventional notions of femininity that she suffered decades of frustration and ill health before liberating herself with radical new ideas. Her emphasis on spiritual healing and women's empowerment made enemies virtually from the first publication of Science and Health in 1875; the schisms and lawsuits that plagued her church gave Eddy's opponents ammunition. In her thorough coverage of such touchy matters, Gill doesn't deny her subject's imperiousness and tendency to paranoia, but her sympathetic analysis stresses Eddy's gifts as a religious leader, administrator, and propagandist. The author gained access to the closely guarded Christian Science archives without ceding editorial control, and her scrupulous effort to freshly judge every issue justifies this trust. Gill's dry wit and first-person presence in the text's opinions ensure that her lengthy, exhaustively documented narrative doesn't feel unduly daunting or academic.
