DuBois's book The Souls of Black Folks, is his sociological study of African Americans. The book was printed in 28 editions and translated broadly. Along with Dr. Alain Locke, Du Bois urged African-American artists in the 1920s to create from the experiences of African-American folk life and to celebrate their ancient African cultural heritage. The cover illustration shown on The Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races, was done by Aaron Douglas. Douglas was an artist who followed DuBois' and Locke's doctrine. His works frequently adorned the covers of literary works of the Harlem Renaissance period. DuBois organized the first four Pan-African congresses, and was special minister and envoy at the inauguration of the President of Liberia. He taught at Wilberforce and Atlanta Universities and edited several publications which were significant contributions to the field of social sciences. Outspoken on many issues, he was considered the Father of Pan Africanism and he urged the British to "give the rights of responsible government" to the black colonies of Africa and the West Indies. One of his most famous and prophetic quotes is that "the problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line." DuBois became a resident of Ghana at the invitation of President Kwame Nkrumah. He died there in 1963 at the age of 95.

CENTENNIAL OF W. E. B. Du BOIS' SOULS OF BLACK FOLK
A public lecture series on the legacy of African American author, historian, and activist William Edward Burghart Du Bois (1868-1963) will mark the centennial of the publication of his remarkable book, The Souls of Black Folk , by Chicago's A. C. McClurg Co. in April 1903. In Souls , Du Bois penned the oft-quoted statement that "the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line." Du Bois played a key role in the founding of the NAACP, edited its newspaper, and published widely on sociology, history, and politics. These lectures, accompanied by a display of Du Bois-related materials from the Newberry's collections, aims to deepen public understanding of Du Bois' life and work, and of the resonance of his prediction for the twenty-first century.

Race, Class, Power The Driving Forces Behind Du Bois' Scholarship and Revolutionary Agenda
by Rodney D. Coates, Ph. D.
W.E.B. Du Bois
When once
the Blacks of the
United States,
the West Indies and Africa work and think together, the future of the Black man in the world is safe.
Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois From 1867 to 1876, Negroes placed their whole hope of full emancipation and economic security upon their political power. This was of course putting the cart before the horse. Their political power could only have been permanently sustained by economic security-ownership of land, control of some capital and education (Du Bois, 1936a). America, with its egalitarian creeds imbued in the phrase "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" is to be judged by the extent that these rights and privileges are extended to all the citizenry. Du Bois, fervently believing in a populist democracy, spent nearly a century challenging America to live up to its promises by guaranteeing these rights and privileges denied particularly to blacks. Blacks, however were not his sole concern, Du Bois like the prophet crying in the wilderness,' consistently rebuked imperialism, anti-semitism and oppression in all of its many guises (Pollard, 1992).

A Statement Concerning the:
Encyclopaedia Africana Project
by Dr. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois Early in 1962, preparatory work toward the compilation and production of an Encyclopaedia Africana was formally initiated in Accra, Ghana, under the sponsorship of the Ghana Academy of Sciences. As Director of the Secretariat for this undertaking, I am naturally most anxious that what we propose become both well known and properly understood in scholarly circles throughout the world, to the end that we may secure the widest possible cooperation. It is with this purpose in mind that the present brief, preliminary statement is offered. W.E.B. Du Bois

A Proposed Conference on the Encyclopaedia Africana® Opening Address
by Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois
Director- Secretariat
Encyclopaedia Africana
December 18, 1962 I wish first to express my sincere thanks to those of you here who have accepted the invitation of our Secretariat to participate in this Conference and thus assist us in the preparatory work which we have undertaken for the creation of an Encyclopaedia Africana
You have noted, from letters cited in our Information Report, the most
gratifying endorsement from scholars in all sections of the world of the general aims of this work. Some of you, however, ask if an Encyclopaedia Africana at this time is not premature.
Is this not a too ambitious undertaking
for African scholars to attempt? Is there enough scientifically proven
    information ready for publication?
Our answer is that an Encyclopaedia Africana is long overdue. Yet, it is logical that such a work had to wait for independent Africans to carry it out.
It is true that scientific written records do not exist in most parts of this vast continent, but the time is now for beginning. The Encyclopaedia hopes to eliminate the artificial boundaries created on the continent by colonial masters. Designations such as

February 23 ~  Greater, Broader, and Fuller Black Silk "Believe in life A l w a ys human beings will live and progress to greater , broader, and f u l l e r lives." ~ W.E.B. Du Bois African American writer and teacher William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) was born on this day in Great Barrington, Massachusetts , three years after the end of the American Civil War. He was the most influential black leader of the first half of the 20th century. "One ever feels his twoness—an American, a Negro; two souls , two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder," said Du Bois, who was his high school's valedictorian. Educated at Fisk, Harvard, and the University of Berlin, he was an advocate for education and equality. He published The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study (1899), the first case study of a U.S. black community which used ethnography, history, and statistics. In his masterpiece The Souls of Black Folk (1903), he wrote, "The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line." "Am I an American or am I a Negro?" he asked. "Can I be both?"
