Theodore Dreiser
Dreiser was born in 1871, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended Indiana University. Before becomming an author, he became the editor of a music magazine in New York City. His style lacks grace, but his best stories are powerful and sobering. The characters in his stories are victims of meaningless incidents, which result in pressures that they can neither understand nor control. His brother, Paul Dreiser wrote " On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away." Dreiser's family was very poor and this made him realize the difference between the promise and the reality of American life. This experience affected his work greatly. Findings in biology and psychology helped him uphold the principle that human behavior was determined not by free will but by social forces, unconscious minds, and body chemistry. Along with novels, he wrote short stories, essays, plays, and memoirs. Some of his novels are: Sister Carrie, The Titan, The "Genius", The Bulwark, and The Stoic.

Introduction
This minibibliography, second in a series of three minibibliographies listing the best of American fiction, covers the period from 1900 to 1945. Theodore Dreiser, author of Sister Carrie, was the first voice to be heard as American literature entered the twentieth century. His reportorial vision and his message that outside forces direct human affairs were a continuation of the trend toward realism and naturalism first presented in the works of William Dean Howells, Henry James, Stephen Crane, and Frank Norris (see The Best of American Fiction: Early Period, minibibliography no. NSS 87-7 ). Dreiser also set the stage for other realistic and naturalistic American writers such as Erskine Caldwell, Jack London, and Sherwood Anderson. Other writers of the period from 1900 to 1945 focused their critical vision on particular regions or geographical locations. William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe, and Ellen Glasgow captured the character and conflicts of the South while Willa Cather and O.E. Rolvaag chose the desolate American prairie as a setting to communicate timeless visions of humanity and its struggles. During the 1920s, two of the best known American literary figures, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald, reflected the shattered idealism and morality of the Jazz Age in

American author, outstanding representantive of naturalism, whose novels depict real-life subjects in a harsh light. Dreiser's novels were held to be amoral, and he battled throughout his career against censorship, starting from his first novel, SISTER CARRIE (1900). Dreiser's principal concern was with the conflict between human needs and the demands of society for material success. "A woman should some day write the complete philosophy of clothes. No matter how young, it is one of the things she wholly comprehends. There is an indescribably faint line in the matter of man's apparel which somehow divides for her those who are worth glancing at and those who are not. Once an individual has passed this faint line on the way downward he will get no glance from her. There is another line at which the dress of a man will cause her to study her own."
(from Sister Carrie) Dreiser was born in Sullivan, Indiana, as the ninth of the ten children. His parents were poor. In the 1860s his father, a devout Catholic German immigrant, had attempted to establish his own woolen mill, but after it was destroyed in a fire, the family lived in poverty. Dreiser's schooling was erratinc, when the family moved from town to town. He left home when he was 16 and worked at whatever jobs he could find. With the help of his former teacher, he was able to spend the year 1889-1890 at the University of Indiana. Dreiser left after only a year. He was, however, a voracious reader, and the impact of such writers as Hawthorne, Poe, Balzac, Herbert Spenser, and Freud influenced his thought and his reaction against organized religion.

Theodore Dreiser
Dreiser (1871-1945) is still considered one of the great American realists, or naturalists. His novels deal with everyday life, often with its sordid side. The characters who people his novels, unable to assert their will against natural and economic forces, are mixtures of good and bad, but he seldom passes judgment on them. He describes them and their actions in massive detail. As Dreiser sees them, human beings are not tragic but pathetic in their inability to escape their petty fates. In the end the sheer weight and power of the author's conviction compel the reader to share his compassionate vision. Born in small-town Indiana, Dreiser rebelled as a youth against the poverty and narrowness of the life around him. One of his high school teachers recognized his talent and paid his tuition at Indiana University. But Dreiser left college after a year because he felt it "did not concern ordinary life at all." He had various jobs in Chicago: washing dishes, shoveling coal, working in a factory, and collecting bills¡Xexperiences which he later used in his writing. He taught himself to be a newspaper reporter and supported himself as a journalist and editor for many years while he was struggling to become recognized as a novelist.

Theodore Dreiser
Edited by Yoshinobu Hakutani Before coming to national attention for his novel Sister Carrie, Theodore Dreiser worked for nearly a decade as a magazine editor and freelance writer. In this volume, liberally seasoned with period illustrations, Yoshinobu Hakutani has collected and annotated a rich selection of Dreiser's early writings on the cultural milieu of his day. In these brief essays, Dreiser sallies into the vibrant world of creative work in turn-of-the-century America. He inspects the eccentric and revealing paraphernalia of artists' studios, probes the work habits of writers, and goes behind the scenes in the popular song-writing business, where this week's celebrity is next week's has-been. He profiles famous figures such as Alfred Stieglitz and William Dean Howells and introduces numerous women artists, novelists, and musicians, including the prolific and tireless Amelia Barr (mother of fourteen children and author of thirty-two novels), the illustrator Alice B. Stephens, and the opera singer Lillian Nordica. Bubbling up through Dreiser's observations and reflections are a keen curiosity about the creative process and a passion for identifying the peculiarly American spirit reflected in the young nation's artists and their work. Hakutani's notes provide biographical detail on dozens of now-obscure individuals mentioned by Dreiser.

Dreiser distributed it himself, but it was consistently attacked as immoral; it was reissued in 1982 with many passages from his revised typescript restored. Jennie Gerhardt The Financier (1912), he turned his attention more specifically to American social and economic institutions. This novel, the first of a trilogy that includes The Titan (1914) and The Stoic (1947), describes the rise to power of a ruthless industrialist. In both The Genius (1915) and in The Bulwark (1946), Dreiser explores the failings of an American artist. An American Tragedy (1925), often considered his greatest work, tells of a poor young man's futile effort to achieve social and financial success; the attempt ends in his execution for murder. In his later life Dreiser became interested in socialism, visiting the Soviet Union as a guest of the government and writing his perceptions: Dreiser Looks at Russia (1928) and Tragic America (1931). Among his other works are such collections of short stories as

Theodore Dreiser
Biography Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Theodore Dreiser grew up in a poor family with an emotionally distant and morally rigid father. Dreiser supported himself from the age of fifteen, spending one year at Indiana University before obtaining a job as a reporter with the Chicago Globe . He read the works of late-nineteenth-century scientists and social scientists such as Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley who agreed that human evolution was based upon the principle of the "survival of the fittest." Fascinated by human destinies and motives, Dreiser addressed the tension between determinism and human compassion in his fiction. In the early 1900s, Dreiser suffered a nervous breakdown but rallied to become an editor and, later, editorial director of the Butterick Publishing Company. His novels include Sister Carrie Jennie Gerhardt (1911), and An American Tragedy Explorations Though Dreiser's reputation is sustained chiefly by long novels, short, compressed tales such as Old Rogaum and His Theresa (1918) can show us the complex textures and motives of literary naturalism in bold relief. Theodore Dreiser grew up in a large, poor family in Terre Haute, Indiana. Several of his brothers and sisters would later rescue Dreiser at low points in his career - two of his protagonists were based on sisters, and his brother, Paul, sent Dreiser to a resort when he was broke. A high school teacher paid to send him to Indiana University for one year, but Dreiser did not fit in, and he left college to become a reporter. Newspapering took him to Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and New York City, where he gathered his first observations of the American cities that would play large roles in his upcoming novels. Dreiser's novels are prime examples of literary naturalism, with characters driven by selfish motives and influenced by the privileges and limitations of social class. He was often criticized for telling amoral tales that could outrage readers or convince them that bad decisions would be rewarded. Among his most significant influences are Herbert Spencer and Honore de Balzac. Dreiser was a finalist for the Nobel Prize in 1930; when Sinclair Lewis won, he acknowledged Dreiser in his speech.
