Dosteyevsky was born in Moscow on October 30, 1821 and is the second son of a military doctor. Dostoyevsky grew up in materially comfort but psychologically damaging circumstances. He was educated at home and at private school. After finishing a military engineering education in 1843, he soon turned to literature. In 1849. Dostoyevsky was arrested for participation in a mildly subversive group, the Petrashevsky Circle, and sentenced first to prison and then to a harsh exile in Siberia for a total of ten years. These experiencesand especially his last-minute reprieve from an expected executionled him to embrace more fervently his Orthodox religious values and to reject the West as a model for Russian society. Along with the consumptive wife he had married, he returned to St. Petersburg in 1859 and there entered upon the major phase of his literary career. He died on January 28, 1881 at the age of 59 from a lung hemorage.
Some Works Written by Dostoyevsky Crime and Punishment This novel is about a desperate young man, named Raskolnikov, who plans the perfect crime the murder of a despicable pawnbroker, an old women no one loves and no one will mourn. 1821-1881), Russian writer and thinker, one of the world's greatest novelists, whose works dramatize religious, moral, political, and psychological issues. Fyodor Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow and was educated at the School of Military Engineering in Saint Petersburg. His first novel, Bednye liudi Poor People ), won praise from Russian critics. His next book, Dvoinik The Double ), was much less popular. Over the next three years Dostoyevsky published ten other short novels and stories. In 1840s Dostoyevsky joined a group of men who met in secret to discuss social problems and social reform in Russia. The Tsar Nicholas I, fearing the spread of revolutionary ideas, felt the group was dangerous. In April 1849 Dostoyevsky and 23 others in the group were arrested, and sentenced to death. Later, the sentence was changed to imprisonment in Siberia. He lived in a prison in Omsk for four years. While in prison he suffered from intensified epileptic seizures. In 1854 he was released from prison but required to serve in an army unit stationed in Siberia. He married a widow and in 1859 he returned to St. Petersburg. Dostoyevsky's prison experiences left him with a firsthand knowledge of the criminal mind and of the human potential for evil, which would influence his later works.

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) Biography: Born in Moscow on October 30, 1821 in Moscow, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was the second of a family of seven children. His mother died in 1837, and his father was murdered but two years later while he attended private boarding school in Moscow. From 1838 to 1843 he studied at the Military Engineering College in St. Petersburg, graduating with the rank of officer. The publication of his first novel, Poor Folk (1846), was met with success and hailed by the liberal critics Belinsky and Nekrasov. IN 1849, Dostoevsky, along with several other young intellectuals, was arrested and sentenced to death for his involvement in the socialist-oriented 'Petrashevsky Circle,' although the degree of his actual involvement in this movement is a debatable point. Though he received reprieve from death, he was sentenced to penal servitude, and until 1854 lived in a convict prison in Omsk, Siberia, an experience bearing a profound effect, both on his writing and his personal spirituality. Upon his return to European Russia, he began publishing again, culling

Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) the might of whose artistic talent considered equal in his writings to that of Shakespeare alone, gave expression in his writings to the boundless suffering of a humiliated and insulted mankind and the boundless anguish that suffering caused him. At the same time, however, he was violently opposed to any attempts to find a way to liberate mankind from humiliation and insult. “In reading biographies of my father, I have always been surprised to find that his biographers have studied him solely as a Russian, and sometimes even as the most Russian of Russians. Now Dostoevsky was Russian only on his mother’s side, for his paternal ancestors were of Lithuanian origin. Of all lands in the Russian Empire, Lithuania is certainly the most interesting by reason of its transformations and the various influences it has undergone in the course of centuries.” Aimee Dostoevsky
