Benjamin Disraeli, First Earl of Beaconsfield (1804-1881)
Twice British Prime Minister, in 1868 and 187480, and well known as a novelist. "Lord Beaconsfield, even his most ardent admirers would admit, gave no evidence that he was possessed of the creative faculty in verse; an ardent imagination he undoubtedly had. He wrote, so far as I am aware, only two sonnets, one of whichthat on Wellingtoncertainly deserves a place in any sonnet-anthology. I do not insert it in the body of this book, however, as its composition was fortuitous, and as its author has no broader claim to appear among genuine poets.[!]" ( Sharp Also, see Gladstone
Wellington
Not only that thy puissant arm could bind
The tyrant of a world; and, conquering Fate,
Enfranchise Europe, do I deem thee great;
But that in all thy actions I do find
Exact propriety: no gusts of mind
Fitful and wild, but that continuous state
Of ordered impulse mariners await
In some benignant and enriching wind,
The breath ordained of Nature. Thy calm mien
Recalls old Rome, as much as thy high deed;
Duty thine only idol, and serene

December 20 ~  Born For Love Disraeli "We are all b o r n for love . It is the p r i n c i p l e of existence, and it's o n l y end." ~ Benjamin Disraeli Born in London, England , Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), the 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, influenced British politics for over 30 years as its prime minister (1868 and 1874-1880), statesman, and author. "No government," he wrote, "can be long secure without a formidable opposition." Disraeli became the leader of the Tory protectionists in 1848. "Life is too short to be small," he said. In the midst of Victorianism, the statesman became England's first and only Jewish prime minister. He was a conservative who favored a political partnership with the working and middle classes. He also believed in preserving the monarchy. "The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches," he explained, "but reveal to them their own." He published his first novel, Vivian Grey , in 1826 and two political novels, Coningsby (1844) and Sybil (1846). "Nurture your mind with great thoughts, for you will never go any higher than you think," he said.

Isaac D'Israeli - English man of letters, father of Benjamin Disraeli . His father, Benjamin D'Israeli, an Italian Jew, migrated from Venice to London in 1748 and amassed a substantial estate. Isaac passed his life in quiet and almost uninterrupted study, publishing a number of novels and books of informed essays on literature, history, and the curiosities of life. In 1813, in a quarrel with officals of the synagogue in Bevis Marks, he converted to Christianity. He had his surviving children baptized about 1817. As a Jew, Benjamin Disraeli would have been barred by English law from a political career. Charles Darwin - English naturalist, author of The Origin of Species (1859). A close friend of Sir Charles Lyell, he took Lyell's Principles of Geology with him on the voyage of the Beagle , and saw much of Lyell in the years after his return to England. He was also influenced by Malthus's theories on human population dynamics, among the gloomiest theories of a dismal science.

Brighton, Sussex: Harvester Press Microform Publications, 1978. 6 reels. COVERAGE The reports from 1837-1867 are comprised of British prime ministers' handwritten reports to the monarch on proceedings of cabinet meetings. These manuscript letters represent the sole official record of the deliberations of Cabinet. Prime Ministers such as Melbourne, Peel, Russell and Palmerston wrote confidential memoranda for Queen Victoria on all major questions of the day. Their reports cover the three decades when the Great Reform Acts of 1832, civil disturbances and the Chartist Riots contributed to unprecedented economic and social change. The reports from 1867-1916 include 1,700 confidential manuscript letters preserved in the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle. These letters are the only official record of cabinet meetings, decisions and discussions for this time, as no other historical record was allowed to be kept. The Prime Minister, as the Crown's first confidential adviser, was required to send a report to the sovereign after every cabinet meeting. Only he was permitted to take notes of Cabinet proceeedings, and his personal letters were written the same day and prepared in his own hand. They range from short statements to detailed accounts of arguments put forth and decisions taken. A wide range of subjects is covered, with the greatest emphasis on political activity in Great Britain.

W.J. Fox, explaining that he is ill with influenza, while sending him 'something short, if not sweet, apropos to 'Insincerity' [doubtless in reference to one of his earliest publications, a pamphlet entitled What is He? by the Author of Vivian Grey ]' and expressing his own political inclinations, and those of others for him, at this early stage in his care '...Certainly the popular party seem determined to make me a Tory, w[hi]ch I regret, as my talents are all the other way. But in this damned hereditary country, every body believes that you are indebted to your father for your politics as well as y[ou]r property...' and in a 'Postscriptum' he declares that 'The party I wish to influence are the persons who brought in Whalley a mere tool.
