A Tale of Two Cities
Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Type of Work:

Historical fiction Setting
London and Paris during the French Revolution (1789-1799) Principal Characters
Dr. Manette, a French physician, wrongfully imprisoned for 18 years
Lucie Manette, his daughter
Charles Darnay, a former French aristocrat who has repudiated his title and left France to live in England
Sydney Carton, a law clerk Madame Defarge, a French peasant and longtime revolutionary Story Overveiw (In the year 1775, King George III sat on the throne of England, preoccupied with his rebellious colonies in America. Across a narrow neck of water to the east, Louis XVI reigned in France, not very much bothered by anything except seeing to his own comforts.) On a cold and foggy night in late November, Mr. Jarvis Lorry was headed out of London bound for Paris, via Dover, on a matter of business. In the darkness of the coach, as he and the other passengers waked and drowsed by turns, Lorry was confronted by a gaunt and ghostly apparition, who engaged him in a silent and macabre conversation The figure haunting him through the night was Dr. Manette, a French physician and the father of Mr. Lorry's young ward. When the doctor had disappeared from his home eighteen years before, his young English wife had diligently and sorrowfully searched for him, until she died two years later, leaving her small daughter Lucie, who was placed in the care of Mr. Lorry. Lorry had brought the child to England, where she was turned over to Lorry's servant, Miss Press, a wild-looking, wonderful woman who adored her.

    Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
A prolific novelist, Dickens was born in Portsmouth to John and Elizabeth Dickens. Young Charles had an unsettled childhood due to the financial irresponsibilities of his parents. He had to go to work in Warren's Blacking Factory, just two days after his twelfth birthday, as a result of his father being thrown into debtor's prison.
He attended a series of schools, where he was a voracious reader, after which he became an office boy in a law firm. He became a reporter and worked for his uncle's publication, "The Mirror of Parliament". In 1833 he became Parliamentary journalist for The Morning Chronicle, and wrote freelance sketches for many different publications.
From his time as a reporter, Dickens acquired an intimate knowledge of the streets, parks, alleys, mews, gardens, markets and lanes of London, which would provide him with much useful background material for his later work. His experiences as a journalist and selections from his outside writings were published as his first book, "Sketches by Boz" (1836). The pseudonym, Boz, was derived from his own childhood mispronunciation of the name Moses.
In April, 1836, Dickens married Catherine Hogarth, in London, and in the same month, published the first number in the serial, "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club", better known as "The Pickwick Papers". Its fourth installment elevated Dickens to literary and financial success.

    Charles Dickens
Editó los semanarios Household News (1850-1859) y All the Year Round (1859-1870), escribió dos libros de viajes

It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than
    I have ever known
-Sydney Carton The passage above and the opening of the novelIt was the best of times, it was the worst of timesare among the most often quoted lines from any of Dickens' works, both because they are memorable and because somehow this is the one work of his that we all get assigned in school. I assume this one is chosen because, while it is still great, it is one of his shorter efforts. The story should be familiar, Dr. Alexander Manette is freed from his unjust imprisonment in the Bastille and is reunited with his long lost daughter, Lucie, in England. They are called as witnesses at the treason trial of Charles Darnay, a dashing young Frenchman. Darnay too is falsely accused, but he is saved, in part by his resemblance to a law clerk named Sydney Carton. Darnay and Lucie eventually marry, though not before the wastrel Carton declares his love for her and his unworthiness of her. He pledges that one day he will prove himself worthy by doing her a service. That opportunity comes when Darnay is condemned to death by a French tribunal and sentenced to the guillotine. This has been one of my favorite books since the 8th Grade. There is no more thrilling moment in literature then when Carton takes Darnay's place and bravely faces certain death. It is a moment of redemption that reminds us that great literature serves human purposes; we may never have such a moment in our own lives, but the example instructs us in how we should face such a situation if the time comes. We can ask no more of ourselves than the courage and sense of honor to do that "far, far better thing."

    Great Expectations Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens was born near Portsmouth on February 7, 1812. The happiest years of his childhood were spent in Chatham, Kent, where his family lived between 1817 and 1823. It was in Chatham that Dickens was first introduced to the world of literature and drama. In 1823, his family moved to London, where his father was suddenly arrested for debt and incarcerated in Marshalsea Debtors' Prison.
For the three months that John Dickens and his family lived in a single, cramped room in the Marshalsea, Charles then only eleven was left to live alone in lodgings, and was sent to work at Warren's Blacking Factory.

    Charles Dickens
