Richard Harding Davis, F.R.G.S., With Both Armies in South Africa , New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901 Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916) Richard Harding Davis was one of the most active and influential journalists during the Spanish-American War. Born in 1864, Davis entered the newspaper business soon after his studies at Lehigh and Johns Hopkins University. As a reporter for The Sun and managing editor for Harper's Weekly , Richard Harding Davis had become a well known writer by the 1890s. In 1896, William Randolph Hearst, owner and editor of the New York Journal commissioned Davis and noted illustrator Frederick Remington to cover the Cuban rebellion against Spanish rule. In Cuba, Davis wrote several articles that sparked U.S. interest in the struggles of the Cuban people. Two stories in particular captured the public's attention. The first, "The death of Rodriguez," described the execution of a young Cuban prisoner. The second concerned a strip search of a young Cuban woman. Davis was outraged when Hearst printed that the search had been conducted by male guards (Davis reported that the search had been done by females). After this episode, Davis resigned and refused to work for Hearst again. During 1898, Richard Harding Davis reported for the

Davis was easily the first reporter of his time – perhaps of all time. Out of any incident or situation he could pick the most details that would interest the most people and put them in a way that was pleasing to the most people; and always, it seemed he had the extraordinary good judgment or the extraordinary good luck to be just where the most interesting thing was taking place. He posed for the male counterpart of the Gibson girl, and introduced the avocado to American dining tables. He counted Stanford White, Charles Dana Gibson, Ethel Barrymore, and Stephen Crane among his somewhat raffish circle of friends and associates. "Dick's life was filled with just the sort of adventure he liked the best. No one ever saw more wars in so many different places or got more out of them. And it took the largest war in all history to wear out that stout heart. We shall miss him." Charles Dana Gibson American Illustrator (1867-1944) Creator of the "Gibson girl"

Winston Churchill Leonard Wood John T. McCutcheon R. H. D. By GOUVERNEUR MORRIS "And they rise to their feet as He passes by, gentlemen unafraid." He was almost too good to be true. In addition, the gods loved him, and so he had to die young. Some people think that a man of fifty-two is middle-aged. But if R. H. D. had lived to be a hundred, he would never have grown old. It is not generally known that the name of his other brother was Peter Pan. Within the year we have played at pirates together, at the taking of sperm whales; and we have ransacked the Westchester Hills for gunsites against the Mexican invasion. And we have made lists of guns, and medicines, and tinned things, in case we should ever happen to go elephant-shooting in Africa. But we weren't going to hurt the elephants. Once R. H. D. shot a hippopotamus and he was always ashamed and sorry. I think he never killed anything else. He wasn't that kind of a sportsman. Of hunting, as of many other things, he has said the last word. Do you remember the Happy Hunting Ground in "The Bar Sinister"?—"where nobody hunts us, and there is nothing to hunt."

Davis, Richard Harding 1864-1916, American author and journalist, b. Philadelphia; son of Rebecca Harding Davis. After attending Lehigh and Johns Hopkins universities, he became a reporter in Philadelphia and later was on the New York Evening Sun. His stories and articles were soon attracting attention, and with the publication of Gallegher and Other Stories (1891), a collection of tales about a newsboy-detective, his reputation as a fiction writer was established. In 1890 he became managing editor of Harper's Weekly and began making trips in its behalf to various parts of the world. As a foreign correspondent he covered all the wars of his day and published several books recording his experiences; his war dispatches were colorful and dramatic, frequently at the expense of accuracy. Besides collections of short stories, his other writings include the novels Soldiers of Fortune (1897) and The Bar Sinister (1903) and the plays The Dictator (1904) and Miss Civilization See his Adventures and Letters (ed. by his brother, C. B. Davis, 1917); biography by Arthur Lubow (1992).
