OUR DANA HERITAGE Named for the seafaring author, Richard Henry Dana, Jr., the school has been an integral part of the San Pedro community since it was founded in 1928. The handpainted murals in the foyer and cafeteria depicts scenes from his novel, Two Years Before the Mast
Richard Henry Dana (1815-1882)
Richard Henry Dana, American writer and lawyer, was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on August 1, 1815. He left his studies at Harvard in 1834 in the hope that a sea voyage would aid his failing eyesight. He shipped out of Boston as a common seaman on board the brig Pilgrim bound for the Pacific, and returned to Massachusetts two years later. Completing his education, Dana became a leader of the American bar, an expert on maritime law, and a life-long advocate of the rights of the merchant seamen he had come to know on the Pilgrim and other vessels.

(DETAIL) Richard Henry Dana (1815-1882). Two Years Before the Mast APersonal Narrative of Life at Sea. New York Harper brothers, 1840.
    http://www.californiahistory.net/5_PAGES/harbingers_dana.htm
Richard Henry Dana The hide and tallow trade was important not only for its immediate economic effects but also because the writings of men engaged in the trade greatly heightened American interest in California. On board the ship Pilgrim in 1835 was a young Bostonian named Richard Henry Dana. For eighteen months, Dana and his shipmates collected hides along the California coast. He also made close observations of California's land and people. (DETAIL)- Richard Henry Dana (1815-1882). Two Years Before the Mast: A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea When Dana returned to New England, he published his recollections in Two Years Before the Mast (1840). He described for his countrymen in precise detail the beauties of the California landscape, its capacious harbors, abundant wildlife, and salubrious climate "than which there can be no better in the world." He was contemptuous of the Californios , "an idle thriftless people" who could "make nothing for themselves." He was amazed that they bought "bad wine made in Boston and brought round by us" when their own country abounded in grapes. "In the hands of an enterprising people," he concluded, "what a country this might be!"

TWO HUNDRED YEARS BEFORE THE MAST
    PERSONAL NARRATIVES
Accounts of sea voyages often have elements of personal narration. William Dampier's and George Shelvocke's accounts of their voyages, for example, are written from idiosyncratic, individual points of view, which make their reports highly readable. Personal narratives, however, may be distinguished from voyage accounts in that the voyage account is primarily a record of travel, while the personal narrative, although detailing the events of one or more voyages, is concerned primarily with the life of the individual relating the story. The personal narrative of voyage experiences achieved a high form in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While some narratives include dramatic tales of adventure that seem to border on fiction, the personal narrative was particularly valued for its authenticity and reliability, which is what brought Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast such wide acclaim. The sources for these personal accounts were travel diaries, ships logs, and manuscript memoirs. Nathaniel Uring.
