Since this award was instituted in 1854, only 1,354 have been awarded. A little, known fact, even to many "experts," is that the metal used to forge every Victoria Cross is tended by the 15th Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps in Donnington. The VC metal rarely sees the light of day as it is secured in special vaults and is removed only under exceptional circumstances; however, recently, this item of national history was transported to the Imperial War Museum in London for the royal opening of the Victoria Cross and George Cross Exhibition. The metal, weighing 358 ounces and looking somewhat like a lump of cheese is all that remains of the bronze cascabels from two Russian cannon captured at Sebastopol, the last great battle of the Crimean War in 1854-55. The cascabel is a large knob at the rear of the cannon. The two cannon, minus cascabels, stand proudly outside the Officers Mess in Woolwich. Items with no picture or description are ones I am still working on. I have 100+ VC autographs.

Victoria Cross and George Cross Exhibition The Victoria Cross and George Cross room houses the Museum's collections of these supreme awards for military and civil gallantry. The centrepiece of the display is the 13-pounder 'Nery' gun and the three VC's won by its crew during the Battle of Mons. The stories of Boy First Class Jack Cornwell, Lieutenant J D Smyth (later Brigadier the Rt Hon Sir John Smyth), Corporal Charles Garforth, Group Captain Leonard Cheshire and other First and Second World War VC's are told. Among the George Crosses are those won by resistance hero Wing Commander FF Yeo-Thomas, the 'White Rabbit', and by Lieutenant Robert Davies, who saved St. Paul's Cathedral by defusing a bomb which fell close by during the Blitz. Related exhibits include a telescope used by Lieutenant Augustus Agar VC and a beret belonging to Colonel 'H' Jones VC. Victoria Cross
The author of "Theodora: A Fragment" was born Annie Sophie Cory in 1868 in India. She also used the pen names of Vivian Cory and V.C. Griffin, but wrote this story under the pseudonym Victoria Cross. Shoshanna Knapp writes that speculation about the significance of this pseudonym revolves around three possibilities: she thought she deserved Victoria Cross medal for her valor; she hoped to cross Victoria; she sought to make Queen Victoria "cross" by her writings. Cross' sister was also a writer, who used the pseudonym "Lawrence Hope." Cross was part of the "New Woman" movement in women's fiction, which included such writers such as Sarah Grand, "George Egerton," and Mona Caird. The work of these writers reflected a more radical feminism than that of the 1860s. The New Woman writers embraced a different type of Victorian fiction than we would typically think of: new forms, and new representations of the femaleshe is often unabashedly sexual, and is able to express marital discontent and her aspirations. In this project we have researched "Theodora: A Fragment," but Cross wrote such other works, including many novels:

The foundation of the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria in 1856 marked the recognition by hitherto aristocratic governments of the value of the brave fulfillment of duty by ordinary soldiers. As such it is a significant social as well as military event. Given only for the most conspicuous gallantry, it remains perhaps the most prestigious and valued decoration for exceptional service in the service of country. The following articles present the history of this decoration up to the beginning of the First World War.
