(Article published in Grapevine - April / May 2000)
This month, April 2000, sees the two hundredth anniversary of the death of the poet and hymn writer, William Cowper, who had a small but significant connection with our church. Cowper was a sensitive character and suffered bouts of depression and even madness. As his melancholy increased, in 1763 his brother John, on whom he was dependent, placed him into the care of Dr Nathaniel Cotton of St Albans. Dr Cotton ran a private hospital in his house known as the Collegium Insonorum which stood on the corner of what is now College Street and Lower Dagnall Street. Dr Cotton was a great friend of Dr Samuel Clark, the minister of the chapel in Dagnall Lane where our predecessors met before our present building was erected. Another friend of Dr Cotton was the hymn writer, Philip Doddridge, also a member of the Dagnall Lane Chapel. William Cowper stayed in St Albans for about eighteen months. His stay must have been profitable, for his biographer William Hayley writes of his time with Dr Cotton, "His ideas of religion were changed from the gloom of terror and despair to the lustre of comfort and delight. This juster and happier view of evangelical truth is said to have arisen in his mind while he was reading Romans chapter 3." Hutchinson's encyclopaedia puts it plainly: "He ... sufffered a mental breakdown in 1763 and entered an asylum where he underwent an evangelical conversion."

Lines Written During a Period of Insanity
Hatred and vengeance, my eternal portion, Scarce can endure delay of execution, Wait, with impatient readiness, to seize my Soul in a moment. Damn'd below Judas: more abhorr'd than he was, 5 Who for a few pence sold his holy Master. Twice betrayed Jesus me, the last delinquent, Deems the profanest. Man disavows, and Deity disowns me: Hell might afford my miseries a shelter; 10 Therefore hell keeps her ever hungry mouths all Bolted against me. Hard lot! encompass'd with a thousand dangers; Weary, faint, trembling with a thousand terrors; I'm called, if vanquish'd, to receive a sentence 15 Worse then Abiram's Him the vindictive rod of angry justice Sent quick and howling to the centre headlong; I, fed with judgement, in a fleshly tomb, am Buried above ground. 20
The Poplar Field
The poplars are fell'd, farewell to the shade And the whispering sound of the cool colonnade: The winds play no longer and sing in the leaves, Nor Ouse on his bosom their image receives. Twelve years have elapsed since I first took a view 5 Of my favourite field, and the bank where they grew: And now in the grass behold they are laid, And the tree is my seat that once lent me a shade. The blackbird has fled to another retreat Where the hazels afford him a screen from the heat; 10 And the scene where his melody charm'd me before Resounds with his sweet-flowing ditty no more. My fugitive years are all hasting away, And I must ere long lie as lowly as they, With a turf on my breast and a stone at my head, 15 Ere another such grove shall arise in its stead. 'Tis a sight to engage me, if anything can, To muse on the perishing pleasures of man; Short-lived as we are, our enjoyments, I see, Have a still shorter date, and die sooner than we.

Brief Biography
William Cowper was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, the son of the Reverend John Cowper and Ann, daughter of Roger Donne of Ludham Hall, Norfolk. On leaving school, Cowper was articled to a solicitor and at the age of 23 was called to the Bar. As a result of severe depression, he had to abandon his profession. His gradual recovery coincided with the beginning of his conversion to Christian evangelicism. Cowper found lodging in Huntingdon, with the Reverend Morley Unwin, his wife Mary and his family. After the Reverend Unwin was killed in a riding accident in 1767, Cowper continued to board with Mary and her family.

    Cowper, William (1731-1800) Englischer Schriftsteller. Seine Lyrik markiert einen Wendepunkt der englischen Literatur vom Klassizismus hin zur Romantik Cowper wurde am 26. November 1731 in Great Berkhamstead bei Watford (Hertfordshire) geboren. Zeit seines Lebens litt er unter Depressionen, die von Existenzängsten und religiösem Zweifel herrührten. Nach einem Aufenthalt in einer psychiatrischen Klinik lebte Cowper bei dem evangelischen Geistlichen Morley Unwin und dessen Frau Mary in Huntingdon . Nach Unwins Tod 1767 zog er mit dem Rest der Familie nach Buckinghamshire . 1779 erschienen seine gemeinsam mit dem Geistlichen John Newton verfaßten "Olney Hymns" (1779), die später teils als Kirchenlieder vertont wurden. 1782 veröffentlichte Cowper mit "Poems" einen Zyklus von acht satirischen Dichtungen . Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehören die humorvolle Ballade "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" (1783) und das in Blankversen geschriebene sechsbändige Lobgedicht auf das ländliche Leben, "The Task" "Die Aufgabe" ), das, wenn auch unsentimental-präzise und didaktisch-lehrhaft gehalten, mit seinen Themen und Verfahren - Weltflucht, Naturdarstellung als Spiegel des Seelenlebens etc. - entscheidende Züge der romantischen Weltschmerzdichtung antizipierte. Im Zentrum steht die liebevoll-hymnische Betrachtung der Alltagswelt. (Anlaß zu

    William Cowper
    William Cowper (pronounced Cooper , English poet. Cowper suffered attacks of insanity throughout his life, and sought either treatment or retirement in an asylum early in his life. There he became interested in the predestinarian theology of John Calvin , and became devoted to evangelical Christianity. In he moved to Olney, where he wrote The Olney Hymns with the evangelical preacher John Newton. The project was interrupted by another attack of insanity, during which he was convinced of his irrevocable damnation a sense he describes in his last important poem, "The Cast-Away." In he published his most famous work, The Task , a long poem in six books. Wollstonecraft quotes from The Task in A Vindication A patriot's blood, Well spent in such a strife, may earn indeed, And for a time ensure, to his lov'd land, The sweets of liberty and equal laws; But martyrs struggle for a brighter prize, And win it with more pain. Their blood is shed In confirmation of the noblest claim To walk with God, to be divinely free, To soar, and to anticipate the skies! Yet few remember them. They liv'd unknown Till persecution dragg'd them into fame, And chas'd them up to heav'n. Their ashes flew No marble tells us whither. With their names No bard embalms and sanctifies his song: And history, so warm on meaner themes, Is cold on this. She execrates indeed The tyranny that doom'd them to the fire, But gives the glorious suff'rers little praise. He is the freeman whom the truth makes free, And all are slaves beside.

    Oh! for a closer walk with God,
    A calm and heav'nly frame;
    A light to shine upon the road
    That leads me to the Lamb!
    Where is the blessedness I knew
    When first I saw the Lord?
    Where is the soul-refreshing view Of Jesus, and his word? What peaceful hours I once enjoy'd! How sweet their mem'ry still! But they have left an aching void, The world can never fill. Return, o holy Dove, return, Sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn, And drove thee from my breast. The dearest idol I have known, Whate'er that idol be; Help me to tear it from thy throne, And worship only Thee. So shall my walk be close with God, Calm and serene my frame; So purer light shall mark the road That leads me to the Lamb. home edmund Spenser sir walter Raleigh sir phillip Sidney ... jennifer Reeser Graphics courtesy of
