Poems for the People - Poems by the People
Abraham Cowley
English poet, dramatist and essayist. His poetry includes The Mistress, or Several Copies of Love Verses (1647) and Poems (1656). He is best known for his Pindaric Odes and his unfinished epic, The Davideis. He also wrote A Poem on the Late Civil War and several odes and elegies. His plays include The Guardian (1641), later revised as The Cutter of Coleman Street (1661). His prose writings include A Proposition for the Advancement of Experimental Philosophy (1661) and many fine essays on general topics in the style of Montaigne. He is often described as the last poet of the Metaphysical school, writing The Mistress in the manner of Donne. But his style was mainly classical, more suited to the Augustan style of his successors like Dryden.

Poetry Relating to Death
What can ever be said to ease the pain? Nothing in the immediacy of a passing, but, later, words may be remembered and provide comfort. I never can find such words in myself but these poets could. Look at the Rossetti poems in particular and for a child, the direct simplicity of the John Clare lines will reach the heart. Poets featured on this page: Anonymous Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep I'm Free Horace John Donne ... Dylan Thomas This one is by that wonderful writer....Anonymous This moving poem first came to public attention after a copy was left in an envelope for his parents by Steven Cummins, a soldier killed on active service in Northern Ireland, to be opened in the event of his death. In the weeks that followed the first broadcast, some 30,000 copies were requested from the British Radio Programme: The Bookworm. Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep Do not stand at my grave and weep;

Cheer up, my mates

Drinking THE thirsty earth soaks up the rain,
And drinks and gapes for drink again;
The plants suck in the earth, and are
With constant drinking fresh and fair;
The sea itself (which one would think
Should have but little need of drink) Drinks twice ten thousand rivers up, So fill'd that they o'erflow the cup. The busy Sun (and one would guess By 's drunken fiery face no less) Drinks up the sea, and when he 's done, The Moon and Stars drink up the Sun: They drink and dance by their own light, They drink and revel all the night: Nothing in Nature 's sober found, But an eternal health goes round. Fill up the bowl, then, fill it high, Fill all the glasses therefor why Should every creature drink but I? Why, man of morals, tell me why? Cheer up, my mates, thde wind does fairly blow; Clap on more sail, and never spare; Farewell, all lands, for now we are In the wide sea of drink, and merrily we go.

Trinity College is the third biggest landowner in the UK behind the Queen and the Church. Trinity College was founded by Henry VIII in 1546.
