James W. Abigail
Alderman 1902-November 1907. Alderman James Abigail was a grocer/butcher with a shop immediately adjoining Alderman Smith’s butchery in Albermarle Street. He lived in Denison Street in the 1860s. It has not been confirmed, but this James W. Abigail may be the one who married Mary Ann following the Congregationalist faith, arrived in Sydney in 1860 and produced the controversial MP, Francis Abigail (1840-1921), the difficult James William Abigail who preceded him as a Newtown Alderman, and Melinda Abigail (born in 1866 and died in the 1880s). This James W. Abigail lived at 'Milenda House' in Regent Street in the 1870s-80s. James Abigail built a new shop in September 1880 and owned a terrace of 3 houses in Denison Street, between Kent and Albermarle or between Lennox and Fitzroy Streets that decade. He complained to Council of the "offensive matter which accumulates in the gutter fronting his premises" and of the "incomplete and filthy manner which the nightman had emptied his closet". He suggested the building of the Newtown markets in 1905. They were eventually built on Newman Street opposite the school to a design by Morrow and de Putron (the architects who in 1911 won a competition to redesign the Town Hall).

See Recollections of Writers (1898), a joint work by the Clarkes containing letters and reminiscences of their many literary friends; and Mary Cowden Clarke’s autobiography, My Long Life (1896). A charming series of letters (1850—1861), addressed by her to an American admirer of her work, Robert Balmanno, was edited by Anne Upton Nettieton as Letters to an Enthusiast (Chicago, 1902). degree of perfection. He was also appointed university librarian in 1817, and was one of the founders of the Cambridge Philosophical Society in 1819. He died in London on the 9th of March 1822. The following is a list of his principal works:— Testimony of Authors respecting the Colossal Statue of Ceres in the Public Library, Cambridge (8vo, 1801—1803); The Tomb of Alexander, a Dissertation on the Sarcophagus brought from Alexandria, and now in the British Museum (4to, 1805); A Methodical Distribution of the Mineral Kingdom (fol., Lewes, 1807); A Description of the Greek Marbles brought from the Shores of the Euxine, Archipelago and Mediterranean, and deposited in the University Library, Cambridge (8vo, 1809); Travels in various Countries of Europe, Ass’a and Africa (4to, 1810-1819; 2nd ed., 1811—1823). His Autobiography, Diary and Correspondence, edited by Edward Everett Hale, was published in Boston in f891. (E. E. H.) asian; Long Odds (London, 1870), a novel; and numerous comedies and pantomimes, the best of, which was Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (Theatre Royal, Melbourne; Christmas, 1873). He married an actress, Marian Dunn. In spite of his popular success Clarke was constantly involved in pecuniary difficulties, which are said to have hastened his deli-tb at Melbourne on’the 2nd of August I881. See The Marcus Clarke Memorial Volume (Melbourne, 1884), containing selections from his writings with a biography and list of works, edited by Hamilton Mackinnon. See Taylor, Authentic Memoirs of Mrs Clarke; Clarke (? pseud.), Life of Mrs M. A. Clarke; Annual Register, vol. ii. Clarke afterwards devoted himself to the study of Scripture in the original, and of the primitive Christian writers. Having taken holy orders, he became chaplain to John Moore (1646—1714), bishop of Norwich, who was ever afterwards his friend and patron. In 1699 he published two treatises,—one entitled Three Practical Essays on Baptism, Confirmation and Repentance, and the other, Some Reflections on that part of a book called Amyntor, or a Defence of Milton’s Life, which relates to the Writings of the Primitive Fathers, and the Canon of the New Testament. In 1701 he published A Paraphrase upon the Gospel of St Matthew, which was followed, in 1702, by the Paraphrases upon the Gospels of S~ Mark and St Luke, ~nd soon afterwards by a third volume upon St John. They were subsequently printed together in two volumes and have since passed through several editions. He intended to treat in the same manner the remaining books of the New Testament, but his design was unfulfilled.
