    23. About Winston Churchill

The American Winston Churchill About Winston Churchill Once highly regarded as a novelist and historian, Winston Churchill (1871-1947) was for many years better known in America than his English namesake. In addition to being one of the most widely read authors of his era, Churchill was also actively involved with its politics and social issues. But at the height of his prominence, about 1918, he withdrew from the public eye, with the result that by the time of his death most Americans knew of only one Churchill, the British war leader. Coniston , and an abridgment and revision of it: Coniston: A New Edition Coniston was actually two books in one: a tale of New England and New England politics in the Railroad Age, and a sentimental moral drama cum Coniston could be read by itself as a political novella, and I have done little more than to strike its last chapter. In the second book, the political drama becomes intertwined with a romantic subplot, but usually not in the same passage, and the separation of the two was relatively straightforward. (The material excised from the original in Coniston: A New Edition may be viewed in an appendix By way of (partial) contrast

So? Where is Sir Winston, England's great wartime P.M.? Look in the Spencer Family . Here's why: At the end of the 17 th century, Charles Spencer rd Earl Sunderland, [1675-1722], married Lady Anne Churchill . She was the daughter of John, 1 st Duke Marlborough. One of their great grandchildren, George, 5 th Duke Marlborough, [1766-1840], got the idea of honoring his great grandmother Churchill by incorporating her name into his own, calling himself George Spencer-Churchill Three more generations and one of his great grand children (Sir Winston's father) dropped the hyphen, becoming the Right Honorable Lord Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill , JP, MP, [1849-95]. Presto! Spencer was relegated to middle name status! Those Churchills are really Spencers , and are listed in that family. Unproven or unprocessed(*) candidates:
