*** REQUEST FOR HISTORICAL INFORMATION AND MATERIAL ***
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often known as the Mormons) was organised in 1830. Many think of the Church as an American organisation but few appreciate that it has been present in the British Isles since 1837. Between then and the turn of the century around 100,000 converts joined the Church in Britain before emigrating. For over 50 years, from 1840 onwards, the Church was dominated by British converts. Even today a significant portion of the American members are descended from those British converts. Many important events took place here and many of the Church's well known leaders gained experience while labouring on our shores. With around 180,000 members currently in the British Isles, this web site sets out to provide an understanding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, its British history and the activities of the Church here now. It provides a useful resource both to members of the Church and to those interested in finding out more.

Overview:
Mormon faith groups believe in Restorationism : the concept that: The true Christian church died out early in the 2 nd Century CE , when religious leaders abandoned many of the teachings of Jesus Christ, Paul and the other apostles. It was restored by Joseph Smith in the early 19 th century, when he founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Smith's original denomination fragmented into many faith groups, mainly because of: Conflicts during the 1840s, triggered by the assassination of Joseph Smith, and Additional conflicts during the 1890s over polygamy. The Mormon wing of Christianity now consists of almost a hundred denominations: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (a.k.a. The Church of Jesus Christ, and the LDS) is by far the largest Mormon denomination. The more liberal Community of Christ (formerly called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ) is second in size. Although religious historians and the public generally refer to them as " Mormons ," they do not use the term themselves, because of its association with polygamy, and because they believe the name was not part of the original church.

Restoration
The church of the Restoration was officially "organized" April 6, 1830 with Joseph Smith, Jr., as the President, Prophet, Seer, and Revelator, in accordance with the commandments and revelations received at that time, and also in harmony with the order of the church described in the New Testament.
Church of Jesus Christ
Jesus said, "I will build my church" (Matthew 16:18). The apostle Paul wrote, "Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone" (Ephesians 2:20). A cornerstone bears the name of the structure as a mark of identity. His church was to be "The Church of Jesus Christ" in order to signify whose church it was, hence the main part of the name of the restored church.
Latter Day Saints
"Saints" was the term used in speaking of the members of Christ's church in New Testament times. "Latter-day Saints" is a term identifying members of his church in this last dispensation of time, and is very significant of the fact that there was a restoration, even of the name used in the ancient church.

... The Church Introduction to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Introduction to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
When Jesus Christ lived on the earth, He organized His Church so that all people could receive His gospel and return one day to live with God, our Heavenly Father. After Jesus Christ ascended to heaven, His Apostles continued to receive revelation from Him on how to direct the work of His Church. However, after they were killed, members changed the teachings of the Church that He had established. While many good people and some truth remained, this Apostasy , or general falling away from the truth, brought about the withdrawal of the Church from the earth. The Apostle Peter prophesied that Jesus would restore His Church before His Second Coming ( Jesus Christ began to restore His Church in its fulness to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1820. It has grown to become a worldwide Church with over 11 million members. It has the same teachings and basic organization as the Church established by Jesus in New Testament times. We invite you to learn more about this Church.

Because of this emphasis the Church has occupied itself for many decades in collecting and copying records of genealogical interest and has the world's largest genealogy record collection. These records are made available to members and non-members alike through Family History Centres around the world. In addition the Church now runs a genealogy site, Family Search , making available a database of over 400 million names online, including the IGI and Ancestral File databases, as well as a host of other aids to research.
