hat two days later I should be found pacing the deck of the Flushing steamer with a ticket for Hamburg in my pocket may seem a strange result, yet not so strange if you have divined my state of mind. You will guess, at any rate, that I was armed with the conviction that I was doing an act of obscure penance, rumours of which might call attention to my lot and perhaps awaken remorse in the right quarter, while it left me free to enjoy myself unobtrusively in the remote event of enjoyment being possible. Indeed, my resolution was continually faltering. It faltered when I turned out my gun in the evening and thought of the grouse it ought to have accounted for. It faltered again when I contemplated the miscellaneous list of commissions, sown broadcast through Davies's letter, to fulfil which seemed to make me a willing tool where my chosen rôle was that of an embittered exile, or at least a condescending ally. However, I faced the commissions manfully, after leaving the office. From Flushing eastward to Hamburg, then northward to Flensburg, I cut short the next day's sultry story. Past dyke and windmill and still canals, on to blazing stubbles and roaring towns; at the last, after dusk, through a quiet level region where the train pottered from one lazy little station to another, and at ten o'clock I found myself, stiff and stuffy, on the platform at Flensburg, exchanging greetings with Davies. "It's awfully good of you to come."

Erskine Childers:
Patriot or Traitor?
This is the second of a two part series of articles on Erskine Childers. Part one discussed Erskine Childers' role in securing Howth Guns.) The Irish Volunteers drilled for almost two years with the "Howth Guns" brought into the country by the Englishman Erskine Childers before a shot was fired. When that happened, during the Easter Rebellion of April 16, 1916, Mr. Childers was serving with distinction in the British Royal Navy. But on hearing the news of the Rising, he wrote a cousin cheering the rebels and blaming Great Britain for its years of denying freedom to the Irish. Although many an Irishman, hopeful for Home Rule after the war, cheered the British victory over the fool hardy school teacher Padric Pearse and the poet Joseph Mary Plunkett at the General Post Office on O'Connell Street, Dublin, their sentiments changed quickly owing to Britain's harsh treatment of the captured rebels. One by one, fifteen men were executed between May 3 and May 12, 1916 by British military firing squads for their treasonous act of proclaiming the Irish Republic. The rest of the captured rebels were sentenced to life imprisonment in British goals. Soon pictures of the fifteen "martyrs" could be seen in every pub and shop window. Wartime patriotic displays of the Union Jack were taken down even though there were many Irishmen serving in British and Irish units in France. The slain rebels soon became eulogized in song and story, thereby serving to galvanize a rebellious spirit which bore fruit with the Sinn Fein party's winning more seats in Parliament than the Unionist Party. Rebel Irish Volunteer units began to raid the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) for arms. Once tolerated and even accepted in the local community, the members of the local RIC were finding themselves boycotted in the local pubs and towns. In the Fall of 1918 the Sinn Fein party won the general election in Ireland by a huge majority, but refused to go to London to sit in the Parliament at Westminster. Instead they formed their own parliament, the Dail, and the "Troubles" began.

Erskine Childers:
The Howth Guns
This is the first of a two part series of articles on Erskine Childers.) The more one reads Irish history, the more one realizes that Ireland's independence was brought about by individuals with divergent views, not all of whom would conform to our stereotype of an Irish patriot. Many of us first generation Irish Americans tend to assume that all "good Irishmen" are cut from the same bolt of cloth that is typified by characters played by Bing Crosby and Barry Fitzgerald. In reality, the men and women who worked hard to gain Ireland's independence from Great Britain came from all sorts of diverse backgrounds. I Some were even loyal Englishmen. Erskine Childers was one such individual. Born in England in 1870, a graduate of Cambridge University, and a civil servant who spent most of his adult life working for the British House of Commons as, a Clerk, Erskine Childers was what some would call "gung ho" or a "flag waver." For example, he volunteered twice to serve his country. First, when the Boer War broke out, he enlisted in a horse artillery company that was sent to Africa. And then again in 1914 - at the age of 44, and married with two children - he enlisted in the Royal Navy. This latter decision was a logical choice for a middle aged sailor whose yacht, now on display in the yard at Kilmainham Prison, was once a familiar sight off England and Europe's coastal waters. In fact, Childers had written a mystery novel involving seagoing smugglers and the European coastal waters. This novel so detailed the European coast that some time later the Royal Navy used it as a guide to navigate such waters. For his naval service in World War 1, Childers was awarded Great Britain's highest military honor, the Distinguished Service Cross.

Amazon Erskine Childer's adventurous and romantic lifestyle could almost be transcribed into a novel! So it is no wonder that his famous 'Riddle of the Sands' should contain some sinister and uncanny predictions of a German invasion in those far off days at the turn-of-the-century. This time, Naxos have matched the thrilling and at times mysterious overtornes of Schumann's Fourth Symphony to accompany Dermot Kerrigan's spirited and atmospheric narrative. As Carruthers and Davies explore the remote stretches of German coastline with the Dulcibella, they come across two sinister Germans, Dollmann and Bartels, both masterminds in a plot to invade Britain. The risks and hair-raising escapades of the two are straight out of the smugglers books, such is the quality and sense of atmosphere created by Dermot Kerrigan's reading. He is particularly sinister in the description of 'A night-time visitor' and the mystical but painstaking adventures of 'Carruthers plays the spy'. The booklet also includes a few interesting maps that show the terrain and sea area which is absolutely authentic, the Sands appear prominent in these nostalgic reprints.

The UN in Crisis? The 4th Erskine Childers Memorial Lecture, Action for UN Renewal, 27 June 2000 DAME MARGARET JOAN ANSTEE It is fashionable to suggest that the United Nations is in crisis. But the UN has been in almost perpetual crisis since its creation - the Cold war erupted almost immediately afterwards. And crisis - and its resolution - are the UN's raison d'etre . There is no doubt, though, that its situation has become more serious in the 1990s, for a variety of reasons. Its chronic financial insolvency has reached a new nadir. Some dramatic failures in peacekeeping have overshadowed successes. It has been the subject of constant public criticism, particularly in the USA, and has lacked support from key member states. Is it, however, terminally ill? The UN is beset by a series of paradoxes. The first is that it staggers from one crisis to the next at a time when the demand and the need for an effective international organisation are daily becoming greater. Globalisation and the shrinking world, brought about by the development of technology and communications, have unleashed forces that undermine the already declining ability of governments to control their own territories and policies. Meanwhile the power wielded by the largest transnational corporations, some of which are larger than many UN member states, increases all the time. Large corporations go into crisis - and out of business - when demand for their products falls. The UN is in exactly the reverse position.
