October 19, 2001 John Carroll University's Institute of Catholic Studies Presents
"An Evening with G.K. Chesterton" What: Dr. John C. Chalberg is a professional historian-actor and Fulbright Lecturer who will bring G.K. Chesterton, (1874-1936) to life on stage on the campus of John Carroll University on November 1, 2001. G.K. Chesterton is one of the most quotable and least remembered of early twentieth century British writers. A figure larger then life, Chesterton was an essayist, novelist, mystery writer, poet, playwright and staunch anti-modernist. Chalberg's performance of Chesteron takes the audience on a journey across the Atlantic from England to the U.S., to offer his own unique views on everything from the virtues of things small, whether they be families or pubs, to the evils of things large, from imperialist schemes to socialist states. Who: Dr. Chalberg holds a Ph.D. in American History and has taught at the college level for many years. Throughout his teaching career, he has brought many historical personages to his classroom, including Teddy Roosevelt, Patrick Henry and Huey Long. A Minnesotan by birth and an historian by training, Chalberg has traveled the United States and Canada for a number of years as Teddy Roosevelt, H.L. Mencken and Branch Rickey. Chesterton is his most recent addition to his stable of characters. Where/When November 1, 2001, 7:30 p.m., D.J Lombardo Student Center, Conference Room

September 10 ~  Heart of Man The Man Who Was Thursday "If s e e d s in the black earth can turn into such beautiful r o s e s what might not the heart of man become in its l o n g journey toward the stars ?" ~ G. K. Chesterton A man with extraordinary heart and intellect, born in London, England , writer Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) drew caricatures of his teachers in school and drifted from art to literature as a young student. " Art , like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere," he once said. During his prolific career, Chesterton created over 100 books and articles that included poetry, essays, novels, and biographies. His successful detective-priest Father Brown mysteries were made into films in 1934 and 1954. The popular rotund writer and radio broadcaster was known for his jovial personality and optimism "The really great person is the person who makes every person feel great," he said. Calling paradox "truth standing on its head to gain attention," his poetic essays examined and celebrated the beauty of life. "I believe is getting into hot water," said the master of irony. "I think it keeps you clean."

Christendom Concludes Capital Campaign
After years of planning and three years of hard work, Christendom College has officially reached its $12 million goal and ended its first-ever capital campaign, The Campaign for Christendom: Advancing Catholic Higher Education . "On behalf of President Timothy O'Donnell, Madame Chairman of the Board of Directors Mrs. Donna Bethell, the volunteers and campaign organizers, and the students who will benefit from the fruits of this capital campaign, I offer the college's sincere thanks to the hundreds of friends and benefactors who made this important dream a reality," says John F. Ciskanik, Vice President for Planning, Development, and College Relations. From its founding in 1977 with twenty-six students, five faculty members, borrowed facilities, and a mere $50,000 in the bank, Christendom College has grown rapidly and is now a solid college with undergraduate and graduate programs enrolling 500 students who come from 44 states and 4 foreign countries. It maintains two campuses, manages a modest endowment of over $6 million, and enjoys an admirable reputation for academic excellence and fiscal management. Such progress is even more notable in light of Christendom's historic decision to neither seek, nor accept, Federal financial subsidies.

A Short Biography
(The following text was written by Mike Piff ( MPiff@pa.shef.ac.uk ) Thanks Mike!) Gilbert Keith Chesterton was born in London, England on the 29th of May, 1874. Though he considered himself a mere "rollicking journalist," he was actually a prolific and gifted writer in virtually every area of literature. A man of strong opinions and enormously talented at defending them, his exuberant personality nevertheless allowed him to maintain warm friendships with peoplesuch as George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wellswith whom he vehemently disagreed. Chesterton had no difficulty standing up for what he believed. He was one of the few journalists to oppose the Boer War. His 1922 Eugenics and Other Evils attacked what was at that time the most progressive of all ideas, the idea that the human race could and should breed a superior version of itself. In the Nazi experience, history demonstrated the wisdom of his once "reactionary" views.
