Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616), Spain. Writer Shakespeare's Spanish contemporary and fellow literary genius, Cervantes inaugurated the modern novel with his extraordinary Don Quijote de la Mancha, 1602, which has since been translated into every language in the world. It is the most widely published book in the world after the Bible. Cervantes genius as an observer and recorder of human nature has been recognized not only by the great novelists from Flaubert to Dostoyevski but thinkers such as Sigmund Freud credited Cervantes with inspiring some of his important psychoanalytical discoveries. Translations of Don Quijote have brought indelible expressions to the English language such as:
"sky's the limit"; "thanks for nothing"; "a finger in every pie"; "paid in his own coin"; "a wild-goose chase"; "mind your own business"; "think before you speak"; "forgive and forget"; "to smell a rat"; "turning over a new leaf"; "the haves and have-nots"; "born with a silver spoon in his mouth"; "the pot calling the kettle black"; and "you've seen nothing yet."
His novel Entremeses is another one of his great works, a collection of short stories. His wisdom is also contained in some of his

Don Quixote . Tradition has it that he wrote it while in prison at Argamasilla in La Manchia. The book was first published in 1605; a second part came out in 1615. Don Quixote has been described as "... that genial and just judge of imposture, folly, vanity, affectation, and insincerity; that tragic picture of the brave man born out of his time, too proud and too just to be of use in his age!" (Frederic Harrison, 1831-1923.) Sir Walter Raleigh (1861-1922) wrote this about Don Quixote Don Quixote

    Biography: Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616): Spanish writer whose satiric novel Don Quixote is one of the masterpieces of literature. He was born in Alcalá de Henares, September 29, 1547. In 1568, when Cervantes was a student, a number of his poems were published to commemorate the death of the Spanish Queen Elizabeth of Valois (wife of Felipe II). As a member of a Spanish regiment, he fought in 1571 against the Turks in the naval battle in Lepanto, where he lost the use of his left hand. While returning to Spain in 1575, he was captured by Barbary pirates. He was taken to Algeria as a slave and held there for ransom. During the next five years he made several unsuccessful attempts to escape, and was finally ransomed in 1580 by his family and friends. Cervantes, deciding to become a writer, wrote many poems and plays between 1582 and 1585; few of these exist today. His novel La Galatea (1585) gained him a reputation, but the proceeds from its sale were not enough to support him. Cervantes then took government jobs, first furnishing supplies to the fleet of the Armada and later collecting taxes. The government imprisoned him several times because he failed to explain, in a satisfactory way, his tax-collecting activities and methods. While in prison, Cervantes conceived the idea for a story about a madman who imagines himself a kind of knight-errant performing the magnificent feats he had read about in medieval tales of chivalry, which were wildly popular in Cervantes' day. The first part was issued in 1605 under the title

La Galatea, at the same time that some of his plays, now lost except for El trato de argel and El cerco de Numancia , were playing on the stages of Madrid. Two years later he left for Andalusia, which he traversed for ten years, first as a purveyor for the Invencible Armada and later as a tax collector. As a result of money problems with the government, Cervantes was thrown into jail in Seville in 1597; but in 1605 he was in Valladolid, then seat of the government, just when the immediate success of the first part of his Don Quixote , published in Madrid, signaled his return to the literary world. In 1607, he settled in Madrd just after the return there of the monarch Philip III. During the last nine years of his life, in spite of deaths in the family and personal setbacks, Cervantes solidified his reputation as a writer. He published the Novelas ejemplares in 1613, the

Biography of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (1547-1616)
Cervantes was born in Alcala de Henares, a town 20 miles from Madrid, on September 29, 1547. He was named Miguel for Saint Michael, whose patron day is September 29. Being the son of a barber-surgeon, he traveled around a lot, moving wherever his father's services were needed. His family was large; he was only the fourth son out of what was to become seven children in total. Not much is known about his educational background. It is supposed that he studied under the Jesuits as a child and in his late teens and very early twenties, under the tutelage of the principal of a municipal school in Madrid named Juan Lopez de Hoyos. Unlike most writers of his time, he apparently did not go to university. In 1570, he left Spain for Italy, a move usually done by the Spaniards of his time to further their careers. Once there he joined the Spanish infantry in Naples. Around this time, the relations between the Ottoman Empire and the countries in the Mediterranean were very much strained. This was due to the fact that the Ottoman Empire was quickly expanding its power over these countries. In 1571, a Turkish fleet invaded Cyprus, an island country near Greece. This move made the confrontation between the Turks and the Spanish infantries located in nearby Italy inevitable. Cervantes valiantly fought in the Gulf of Lepanto, an area near Greece. He was badly wounded in his left hand and thus earned the nickname "Manco de Lepanto" (Maimed of Lepanto). After that, he continued fighting in the Mediterranean.

Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes changed the face of fiction with his early 17th century masterpiece, Don Quixote. In the book, a distinguished country gentleman becomes a knight after reading too many chivalric novels. Intended as a spoof on the romantic literature of the time, Don Quixote exposed and satirized Spanish society, medieval romance, and the pastoral novel. Popularly credited as the first modern novel, Don Quixote reveals the essential humanity of its complex, crazed characters and has influenced many subsequent works. Culver Pictures
