POSEIDÓN Y ANFITRITE: Benvenuto Cellini Salero de oro de Francisco I de Francia con Neptuno y Anfitrite. Benvenuto Cellini. 1540-3.

The famous Renaissance sculptor and engraver wrote his autobiography in two parts between 1558 and 1566. It was first printed in 1728.
Cellini (1500-1571) led an adventurous life. At the age of fifteen he became a goldsmith against the will of his father, who wanted him to be a musician and composer. Rich Florentines, noblemen from Tuscany and also the church took an interest in the young goldsmith and gave him important commissions. Cellini became one of the most respected sculptors of his time, famous beyond the borders of Italy. The Vita describes Cellini's works and those who commissioned them, and also his turbulent life and the "dark side" to this strong-willed and pugnacious artist.
The book was widely read in Italy after it was first published. At the end of the eighteenth century it was rediscovered and translated into other languages.
Prechtl depicts Cellini's life in 32 pictures. As there is only one existing authentic portrait of Cellini, Prechtl invented his own Benvenuto.

Benvenuto Cellini
Cellini, Benvenuto (1500-1571), Florentine sculptor and engraver, who became one of the foremost goldsmiths of the Italian Renaissance, executing exquisitely crafted coins, jewellery, vases, and ornaments. Born in Florence, on November 3, 1500, Cellini was apprenticed to a goldsmith at the age of 15. When he was 16, his fiery temper and continual duelling and brawling caused him to be exiled to Siena. Later, in Rome, he was Michelangelo's pupil for a short while.
Among Cellini's most famous patrons were Pope Clement VII, Pope Paul III, Francis I of France, and Cosimo I de Medici. Francis I invited him to Paris in 1540, where he modelled the bronze reliefs of the Nymph of Fontainebleau (Louvre, Paris). He also executed an elaborate gold salt-cellar for Francis (1539-1543, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna). Compelled to leave in 1545 because of his quarrels with the king's mistress and his eccentricities, Cellini returned to Florence. There, under the patronage of Cosimo de Medici, he executed many fine works in metal, among them a bronze portrait bust of Cosimo and the colossal bronze statue Perseus and Medusa (1545-1554, Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence). During the Sacco di Roma he took great effort in defending the town against its invaders, but was finally caught and sat into the dungeon at Castel Sant'Angelo. His escape he has described in his autobiography (see below). I shall think that half of it is just an exciting invention ;-)
