'Curiouser and curiouser!' cried Alice Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland 'When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said in a rather scornful tone, 'it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.' Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking-Glass If - and the thing is wildly possible - the charge of writing nonsense were ever brought against the author ... Lewis Carroll, preface to The Hunting of the Snark Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), was, in real life, the Oxford Mathematics Lecturer (1855-81), the Rev Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, or to his many young friends who knew him personally, Mr Dodgson. Lewis Carroll is derived from the reversed and transmogrified Christian names. Lutwidge Ludovicus Lewis Charles Carolus Carroll Born the son of Charles Dodgson, Archdeacon of Richmond Cathedral, Lewis Carroll was the third of eleven children. As a child he took an early interest in mathematics. On being told that logarithms was too difficult for a child to understand, his response was 'Yes, but please explain.' As a child Lewis Carroll produced the family magazine, where he showed his first interest in parody, word-play and puzzles. At Rugby, he was a diligent, but not very happy pupil. At Christ Church, Oxford, he excelled in his preferred subject, mathematics. Although ordained, Carroll never entered the church, though he did occasionally preach. Ordination was at the time, a necessary prerequisite to lecture at Oxford in mathematics. From entering Oxford at the age of 18 in 1850, Carroll was to spend the next fifty years of his life at Oxford until his death in 1898.

August 1998 Lewis Carroll
Through all the delightful nonsense of Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass' runs a strong vein of sense. Both the sense and the nonsense came naturally to Lewis Carroll.
Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson on Jan. 27, 1832, at Daresbury in Cheshire, England. His father was a clergyman, and Charles was the eldest of 11 childrenfour boys and seven girls. When he was 12 years old, he was sent to school at nearby Rutland, and two years later he entered Rugby. There he earned good grades in classical languages and mathematics as well as a reputation for defending himself with his fists.
When he was 18, Charles entered Christ Church College, Oxford University, where he studied, worked, and lived for the rest of his life. There he took his bachelor's and master's degrees, was ordained a deacon of the Church of England, and taught mathematics to several generations of Oxford students. He never married. His few adult friends were mainly fellow faculty members. His hobbies were mathematical puzzles and photography.
Lewis Carroll always loved children. He gave parties for them and took them to the theater and on picnics. On one such picnic his guests were Alice, Lorina, and Edith, the daughters of Dr. Henry Liddell, dean of Christ Church College. On this hot summer day in a meadow along the Isis River he began to tell them the 'Alice' stories. Later he wrote them out for the children, and the manuscript tales were read and reread by many people. In 1864 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' was published, and 'Through the Looking Glass' in 1871. Both were illustrated by the famous cartoonist and artist Sir John Tenniel.

Charles "Lewis Carroll" Dodgson
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born 27 January 1832, third child and eldest son of the 11(!) children of the Reverend Charles Dodgson and Frances Lutwidge . Like many of the Dodgson children, Charles stuttered fairly badly, something he never quite got rid of in spite of years of effort and even consultations with noted speech therapists of the day. In spite of this, Charles was comfortable playing with and even coining new words.
He attended Rugby school from 1846 to 1850, and was quite a good student, especially in mathematics. The following year, he began attending Christ Church, Oxford, his father's alma mater. Two days after he started, his mother died. His mother's younger sister, Lucy Lutwidge, moved in to help care for the family, and soon grew much beloved.
Charles received his degree with a first in mathematics in 1854. In spite of his stutter, he enjoyed teaching math , and this helped him gain enough confidence to later deliver sermons as well. Charles was at this time under a studentship, which meant he would continue to study and teach at Christ Church for the rest of his life, and he was expected to remain single and also to take holy orders at some point.
Already Charles was getting various poems and short stories published in magazines. About 1855, he wrote a "Stanza of Anglo-Saxon Poetry" which would later become better known as the first four lines of Jabberwocky. Charles was very hard working and organized, which enabled him to write a great deal even though he was now Mathematical Lecturer and basically in charge of the whole math department.

Carroll used the surrealistic settings of his fantasy world to question the commonly accepted ways of thinking. Unlike other children's books of the time, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland did not try to teach a moral message. Carroll also wrote poetry which have remained open to all explanations of meaning. "I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir," said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."
"I don't see," said the Caterpillar.
"I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly," Alice replied very politely, "for I can't understand it myself top begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing."
    "It isn't," said the Caterpillar.

    Daresbury Village
Please click on the map below to view the area in more detail.
This quiet little village, situated in lush Cheshire countryside, is probably most famous as the birthplace of the author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson born in Daresbury in 1832, whose work has brought happiness to thousands of children throughout the world. Today his birthplace is marked by a series of interpretation plaques. Daresbury is located a few miles east of Runcorn and south-west of Warrington, in the borough of Halton. It is located 1 mile North of Junction 11, M56 motorway. There is a bypass in place around the village, thus ensuring its quiet, tranquil atmosphere. Like many villages today, Daresbury's local shops have all closed down but the village pub and smithy remain, (the smithy is now run by an agricultural and horticultural engineer).
One of the more noticeable features of Daresbury is not an ancient monument but the tower of the Daresbury Laboratory. Built in 1967, it is a major government scientific research centre. Recently, there has been a new addition to Daresbury in the form of Daresbury Court. This houses the NW regional headquarters of Origin UK, one of the fastest growing IT services providers.

Almost everyone who has visited Ripon Cathedral will have been shown the carving of the Griffin chasing the rabbit down the rabbit hole, carved on the 15th century misericord under the Mayor's seat in the choir and will have been told the long-held opinion that, together with the underground, tunnelled crypt and other carvings, it could well have played a part in inspiring Alice in Wonderland . Ripon comes into the Dodgson story in 1852 when as a young man his father, also Charles, was appointed a canon of Ripon Cathedral, requiring thirteen weeks residence in Ripon each year which lasted for sixteen years. During vacations from Oxford young Charles joined the family in Ripon, where he worked not only on his mathematics but also wrote letters, poems and stories such as Ye Carpette Knyghte, and Legend of Scotland (for the Bishop 's children) as well as parts of Alice Through the Looking-Glass. His The Hunting of the Snark, the longest and arguably the most important humorous poem in the English language, has amongst its principal characters not only a Boots but also a Bellman, both well-known Ripon characters. A prodigious letter-writer, in Ripon Charles Dodgson began a register of the letters written and received which he kept till just before his death, eventually reaching number 98,721.

    Lewis Carroll. (1832 1898).

Lewis Carroll Home Contents Lewis Carroll is well known throughout the world as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass . Behind the famous pseudonym was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematical lecturer at Oxford University with remarkably diverse talents. Dodgson's boyhood was spent in Newton-by-Daresbury, Cheshire, where he was born on the 27th January 1832, and in Croft, Yorkshire. He spent his adult life in Oxford and died at Guildford in 1898. Besides the Alice books, he wrote many others including poems, pamphlets and articles. He was a skilled mathematician, logician and pioneering photographer and he invented a wealth of games and puzzles which are of great interest today. Through his range of talents he has acquired great respect and has a large following. Charles was the first son, although not the first child, of Rev. C. Dodgson, Vicar of Daresbury and his wife Frances Jane nee Lutwidge. Not much is known about young Charles - or his family for that matter - during this period although it is known that the Dodgson's had a connection with Cheshire that spanned more than a decade and in the case of Charles Lutwidge this covered eleven years (1832-43) The "world", young and impressionable Charles Lutwidge Dodgson came into was that of rural Cheshire and it was a landscape and a way of life untouched by the great changes that were then occurring elsewhere in the North and other parts of the British Isles. No "Satanic mills" could be found there least not Newton-by-Daresbury and the immediate surroundings, and this was to be the setting for young Charles for the first eleven years of his life.
