This poem is delightfully funny and shows off Lewis Carroll's talent for nonsense wonderfully! It's actually an excellent parody of a poem by Robert Southey, titled "The Old Man's Complaints and How He Gained Them" and, in this extreme case, it has become so much more popular that the original is almost unheard of!

    "And your hair has become very white;
    And yet you incessantly stand on your head
    Do you think, at your age, it is right?" "In my youth," Father William replied to his son,
    "I feared it might injure the brain;
    But now that I'm perfectly sure I have none,
    Why, I do it again and again." "You are old," said the youth, "as I mentioned before,
    And have grown most uncommonly fat;
    Yet you turned a back somersault in at the door
    Pray, what is the reason of that?" "In my youth," said the sage, as he shook his gray locks,
    "I kept all my limbs very supple By the use of this ointmentone shilling the box Allow me to sell you a couple."

    The sun was shining on the sea,
    Shining with all his might:
    He did his very best to make
    The billows smooth and bright
    And this was odd, because it was
    The middle of the night. The moon was shining sulkily,
    Because she thought the sun
    Had got no business to be there
    After the day was done
    "It's very rude of him," she said, "To come and spoil the fun." The sea was wet as wet could be, The sands were dry as dry. You could not see a cloud, because No cloud was in the sky: No birds were flying overhead There were no birds to fly. The Walrus and the Carpenter Were walking close at hand; They wept like anything to see Such quantities of sand: `If this were only cleared away,' They said, `it would be grand!'

    LEWIS CARROLL
    English author (1832-1898)
    Biography:
    Charles L. Dogson was born in Daresbury (Lancashire) in 1832, son of a protestant minister. At the age of 18 he joint Christ Church, within Oxford University. Later, he got a degree in Humanities and in 1857 he became teacher at the University. From 1855 on, he worked at the Oxford Library, combining his librarian job with private classes, courses at the university and collaborations in literary reviews. It's precisely then that he met little Alice Liddell, one of the dean's daughters, for whom he was going to write Alice's adventures. In 1865, Carroll and Alice's parents were set at odds so he couldn't see Alice again until 1891. He met other girls who became his friends: Gertrude Chattaway in 1875, and Isa Bowman in 1887. After giving up his teachings at Christ Church, Carroll began teaching at a girls school in Oxford. He died in 1898, leaving his theoretical treaty Symbolic Logic unfinished.
    Since he was 13, young Dogson devoted himself to publishing small literary magazines with his brothers and sisters, for the use of the guests at Croft Presbytery (Yorkshire) where his father preached. These magazines included his own writings, illustrations, poems and songs, some pages devoted to letters to the Editor and some short parodies of contemporary novels.
    From 1855 on, and under the name of Lewis Carroll, he wrote poems for

    Did you know? Carroll invented his pen name by translating his first two names, Charles Ludwidge, into the Latin 'Carolus Lodovicus' and then anglicising it into 'Lewis Carroll'. Critical verdict Alice's popularity used to be explained by the fact that, unlike so much Victoriana, the books were pure, amoral enjoyment - a position somewhat belied by the multiplicity of critical interpretations of Carroll (and confused by the accusations of paedophilia). While they are obviously not 'just' children's books, there's little agreement on what else they might be. Political (the Red Queen as Queen Victoria)? Freudian? Narcotic? Simply bizarre (one critical work, The Agony of Lewis Carroll, consisted entirely of searching Carroll's corpus for smutty anagrams)?
