Thomas Carlyle
Thomas Carlyle
Writer, historian, philosopher and literary critic. Born in Ecclefechan (Dumfries and Galloway), Carlyle was educated at Annan Academy and the University of Edinburgh. He wrote on a diversity of topics from the French Revolution to Oliver Cromwell. Carlyle married the Haddington-born Jane Welsh near Thornhill in 1826. The couple lived first at Comely Bank in Edinburgh, then at Craigenputtoch, a Dumfriesshire farm inherited by Jane, before moving to Chelsea in London. Their home there became the centre of a literary circle which included the poets Tennyson and Robert and Elizabeth Browning, and the authors Dickens Ruskin and Thackeray. Carlyle became Rector of the University of Edinburgh in 1866 and after delivering his rectorial address heard that his beloved wife had died of heart failure. He was devastated. Carlyle died in London. He was variously known as the Prophet of Ecclefechan and the Sage of Chelsea

Thomas Carlyle
Essayist and historian
One of the foremost writers and intellectuals of his era, Carlyle wrote influential works on The French Revolution, Cromwell and Frederick the Great, emphasising the cult of a great man as national moral leader. Carlyle was born in Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway, as the son of a stonemason and small farmer. He was brought up in a strict Calvinist household. At the age of 15 he went to University of Edinburgh, receiving his B.A. in 1813. From 1813 to 1818 he studied for the ministry of the Church of Scotland, but abandoned this course and studied law for a while. Carlyle taught at Annan Academy (1814-16), at Kircaldy Grammar School (1816-18), and privately in Edinburg (1818-22). During this time he worked at his Life of Schiller, which was first published by the London Magazine in 1823-24. He wrote contributions for Brewter's Edinburgh Encyclopedia, also contributing to such journals as Edinburgh Review and Fraser's Magazine. From 1824 he was a full-time writer and undertook thorough study of German literature, especially Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Carlyle's essays on German philosophy introduced many new ideas to the British public. He also produced a translation of a work by Goethe, which was highly acclaimed.

Thomas Carlyle, 1795 - 1881
Thomas Carlyle was a British essayist and biographer whose reputation and influence were immense in the New England Transcendentalist circle. His attraction to the Transcendentalists stemmed from his essays in the Edinburgh Review , especially "State of German Literature" (1827), "Signs of the Times" (1829), and "Characteristics" (1831), as well as several in the Foreign Review . These essays introduced Americans to German writers and philosophers such as Immanuel Kant Johann Gottlieb Fichte Friedrich Schiller Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ... Jean Paul Richter , and Novalis . Carlyle's ideas, borrowed from German idealism, spurred James Freeman Clarke and Margaret Fuller to study German, and they caused George Ripley to excitedly announce his discovery of "the untold treasures of German thought." Ralph Waldo Emerson , too, found a congenial spirit in Carlyle and arranged for the first publication of his Sartor Resartus in 1836. Carlyle has been written about as follows by Octavius Brooks Frothingham , the first historian of American Transcendentalism
Had Carlyle been more of a philosopher and less of a preacher, more a thinker and less a character, more a patient toiler after truth, and less a man of letters, his first intellectual impulse might have lasted. As it was, the reaction came precisely in middle life, and the apostle of transcendental ideas became the champion of Force. His Transcendentalism seems to have been a thing of sentiment rather than of conviction. A man of tremendous strength of feeling, his youth, as is the case with men of feeling, was romantic, enthusiastic, hopeful, exuberant; his manhood, as is also the case with men of feeling, was wilful and overbearing, with sadness deepening into moroseness and unhopefulness verging towards despair.

Gedanken und Zitate:
Thomas Carlyle (17)
