Supreme Court Justices Benjamin N. Cardozo (1870-1938) From 1891-1914, Benjamin Cardozo practiced law in New York City. He practiced with his brother Albert (Allie) Cardozo, Jr., until Allie's death in 1909. He lived at the family's home with his brother, sisters Nell and Lizzie, and his twin, Emily. In early 1932, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes resigned from the Supreme Court due to advancing age (Holmes was 90.) Cardozo, then 61 (Holmes's age when appointed to the Supreme Court), was nominated by President Herbert Hoover to the Court. Less than two weeks later, the Senate unanimously approved Cardozo's nomination. In Fall 1932, in the midst of the Great Depression, former New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected President. FDR would, beginning in March 1933, usher in the New Deal. Various aspects of the New Deal were subject to constitutional challenge almost immediately. The Court was deeply divided during the time Cardozo was a member. Cardozo

    Bacon, Francis
Bacon was the lord chancellor of England; his removal in 1621 makes for a most interesting story. For legal philosophers, however, Francis Bacon is most well known for his delineation of the principles of the inductive scientific method , which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science. Bacon was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power."
    Bagehot, Walter
Mr. Bagehot was a mathematician; a moral philosopher; a political economist; a trained, though not a practising, lawyer; a banker; a shipowner; and, from 1860 till his too early death in 1877, the editor and manager of the Economist . Primarily, however, Bagehot was a reader and critic of books. I have a number of Bagehot's books including:

In The World of Benjamin Cardozo , an entertaining contribution to the literature of Cardozo revisionism, Richard Polenberg, who teaches American history at Cornell, combines biographical exploration with a reconstruction of the facts of some of Cardozo's most salacious cases. From Kirkus Reviews , September 1, 1997
    Book Description
"The sordid controversies of litigants," Benjamin Cardozo once said, are "the stuff from which great and shining truths will ultimately be shaped."As one of America's most influential judges, first on New York State's Court of Appeals and then on the United States Supreme Court, Cardozo (1870-1938) oversaw this transformation daily. How he arrived at his rulings, with their far-reaching consequences, becomes clear in this book, the first to explore the connections between Benjamin Cardozo's life and his jurisprudence. This text refers to the paperback edition of this title From the Back Cover
In The World of Benjamin Cardozo, an entertaining contribution to the literature of Cardozo revisionism, Richard Polenberg combines biographical exploration with a reconstruction of the facts of some of Cardozo's most salacious cases...By creatively combining biographical and judicial excavation, Polenberg shows us that Cardozo was a hopeless moralist as well, one who was reluctant to second-guess the morals of his age.-Edward Hower, New York Times Book Review
