Welles, Mary Jane Hale, (Mrs. Gideon Welles) Papers, 1846 December 17-1848 December 26
    Washington, D.C., 6 items
Background note: Mary Jane Hale grew up in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, with her mother, Jane M. Hale, and two bothers, Reuben and Elias, who suffered from consumption. She probably had additional siblings. Mary Jane married Gideon Welles on June 16, 1835, and they had at least three children: Anna Jane, Tom, and Edgar. At the time these letters were written, the Welles family lived on H street, between 9th and 10th, in Washington, D.C., and Gideon was Chief of the Bureau of Provisions and Clothing for the Navy. He would go on to serve as Lincoln's and then Johnson's Secretary of the Navy.
Scope and contents: These six letters from Mary Jane Hale to her mother primarily discuss her children's illnesses and exploits, and her social life in Washington D. C. She also solicited her mother for news about her brothers and friends from home. Her letters do not flow particularly well, and she rarely described anything in detail, probably because she was often writing from the midst of her family, with a "great noise" and "so much confusion" all around her. Although she often mentioned charitable work, Mary Jane did not appear to take an active part in organizing either church benefits or the work at the nearby Female Orphan Society. She did apply to adopt a girl in 1847, but when the first applicants were refused, the Asylum managers thought it better not to place the girl at all, in order not to further offend the rejected applicants. Even with the help of a couple young women, caring for her family occupied her time entirely. When she could, she strolled on the grounds of the Capitol, and once went to hear John C. Calhoun speak, "though I scare know how to take the time" ([1848 May 15]).

South Carolina Reference Room - Calhoun County History: Calhoun County was named for John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), who served as United States vice president, secretary of state and of war, and senator. The county seat, the town of St. Matthews, was settled around 1841 in an area that was known for its cotton plantations. The county itself was formed in 1908 from parts of Orangeburg and Lexington counties. During the Revolutionary War a famous incident took place at Fort Motte in present day Calhoun County. Rebecca Motte (1738-1815), a local plantation owner, helped the Revolutionary troops drive the British out of her plantation house; she reportedly provided the soldiers with a burning arrow to destroy her own dwelling. Another famous resident of the area was Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Julia Peterkin (1880-1961), who lived at Lang Syne Plantation.

Although John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) remains one of the major figures in American political thought, many of his critics have tried to discredit him as merely a Southern partisan whose ideas were obsolete even during his lifetime. In Calhoun and Popular Rule, H. Lee Cheek, Jr., attempts to correct such misconceptions by presenting Calhoun as an original political thinker who devoted his life to the recovery of a "proper mode of popular rule." He argues that Calhoun had a coherent, systematic view of human nature and society and made a lasting contribution to the theory of constitutionalism and democracy. Cheek suggests that Calhoun was not a political or philosophical aberration, but an authentic exponent of American constitutionalism. He contends that Calhoun's view of democracy forms part of a philosophy of humankind and politics that has relevance beyond the American experience. Although his idea of popular rule was original, it was also related to earlier attempts in America and elsewhere to limit the power of the majority and protect minority interests. According to Cheek, Calhoun stood in the American political tradition and attempted to rearticulate some of its central elements. He explains Calhoun's idea of the concurrent majority and examines how it has been presented by Calhoun's critics, as well as his followers.

    John C. Calhoun
Mathew Brady photographed John C. Calhoun around the winter of 1849 and used the image as the basis for the production of many additional portraits, including this lithograph from The Gallery of Illustrious Americans . Charles E. Lester, The Gallery's biographer, wrote that because Calhoun was "born during the Revolutionary struggle he was taught to venerate liberty, and that lesson became the guide of his life. In youth, he laid himself on the altar of the Republic, and his life has been a self-immolation." Calhoun devoted most of his political career to protecting the interests of the South while maintaining the Union. He came to Washington in 1811 as a congressman from South Carolina, quickly attaining recognition for his powerful support for war against Britain. Under James Monroe he became secretary of war, and was twice elected Vice President under John Quincy Adams in 1824 and Andrew Jackson in 1828. But in 1832 his support for states' rights caused a rift with Jackson, and Calhoun resigned the Vice Presidency for the Senate. Calhoun remained a powerful and charismatic figure in Washington until his death, the perpetual Democratic opponent of Whig politicians Daniel Webster and Henry Clay Gallery of Illustrious Americans
