The city of Deadwood is located in the Northern Black Hills area of western South Dakota on U.S. Highway 85 about ten miles south of the I-90, 55 miles north/west of Rapid City, SD. The area is serviced by three major air lines. None of the car rental dealers offer discounts. Rapid City, South Dakota (population 54,500) is a trading and tourist center. The Black Hills were used as a backdrop to make the award winning movie "Dances With Wolves." Rapid City has ample accommodations, restaurants and enough tourist attractions to keep every one amused before venturing onto Deadwood City. Various tours starting at $20 in mini-vans are offered by "Affordable Adventures" of the Badlands, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Deadwood, SD, Mount Rushmore, Rapid City and western South Dakota, phone (605) 342-4461. Gray Line offers bus tours to Deadwood, SD, Mount Rushmore and local Rapid City sites between mid-May and October starting at $15.00 (605) 342-4461. Additional information, Rapid City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, 444 Mount Rushmore Road N., Rapid City, SD 57709, (800) 487-3223. Black Hills, Badlands and Lakes Association, 900 Jackson Blvd., Rapid City, SD 57702, phone (605) 341-1462. According to historians the Paleo Indians were the first settlers in South Dakota around 8,000 B.C. followed by the Arikara's in 900 A.D, and the Sioux in the 1700s. Evidence was found that French explores were in the area as early as 1743. In 1874 Lieutenant Colonel George Custer established a military post in the area. His staff included several miners who panned for and discovered gold in area creeks.

Wyoming, "the Cowboy State", looks like the Nullarbor Plain on a Himalayan holiday. Its name comes from a Delaware Indian word meaning "on the great plain" and its 253,500 sq. kilometres range from Rocky snow peaks to hot springs to truly great plains.
Above our highway across those plains a thunder cloud curls like a slow tidal wave. I turn the car radio to local stations that are pure Bruce Springsteen: "Radio's jammed up with gospel stations / Lost souls calling long-distance salvation." Eventually, I find a country music one that's all honky-tonk and heart-strings; the DJ announces a singer who, "prior to his recording career, graduated from drag racing school." Seriously.
Indeed, hot rods and music have significantly influenced fashion in parts of Wyoming. In roadhouses from Spotted Horse to the Snake River Valley you meet men who look like hopefuls at a ZZ Top audition, with long-drop beards, shades and baseball caps that make you think you've stepped back into an early1980s LP cover.
Wyoming has a landscape like Marlboro Country minus the class litigation. So, how best to explore it? Give yourself at least a week, and a comfortable car (there's a lot of driving). To truly soak up the spirit, stay a few nights in one of the state's historic hotels. There's the Grand Old Lady of Cody, The Irma Hotel, built in 1902 by Buffalo Bill and named after his daughter (he named the town after himself); The Frontiersman in Medicine Bow, where the front desk sign still says, "Guests without luggage pay in advance" and Room Three is haunted by "Jake" the ghost; and the 1903 Franklin Hotel (in neighbouring Deadwood, South Dakota) whose ghost - every hotel seems to have one - is said, improbably, to be Teddy Roosevelt.

Martha "Calamity Jane" Canary (ca. 1852-1903) claimed to have ridden for the Pony Express and scouted for the United States Army during her years wandering through the American West. Legend holds that she received her nickname because she threatened to wreak calamity upon any man who bothered her. Photographed in 1895.

    http://iserit.greennet.gl/micpe/michaels_website6.html
Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Cannary 1852 - 1903) Calamity Jane It´s often said about Calamity Jane that "she lived her life like a man". Well, that´s not quite accurate. Actually, she lived her life like she wanted to. It´s true that she often spent a night playing poker, she even performed hold-ups, but the money she won was often spent on some kind of charity or if she wanted to see her daughter back east. Calamity´s life has been told in many versions. A lot of movies have been made and even when she was still alive she was pictured as a legend in "dime-novels". Sometimes she told untrue things about herself and why not? She gained from it financially, and in a short period of time she was a part of Wild West-show owned by Buffalo Bill. Here she showed off her skills as a horse rider and a sharpshooter, and on one occasion she joined Buffalo Bill on a trip to England while her daughter was living there. All the way through her life, Jane kept thinking about her daughter in a way only a mother can and she never forgot her. in the latter part of her life she was poor and almost blind. She passed away on the 1st of august 1903, and like she requisted, she was buried next to Wild Bill Hickock in Deadwood, South Dakota.

Calamity Jane (Martha Jane Burke) on horseback, 1901 Corbis-Bettmann (1852?-1903), frontier figure Calamity Jane was born Martha Jane Cannary in Princeton, Missouri, probably in 1852 (and possibly on May 1 of that year). The facts of her life are confused by her own inventions and by the successive stories and legends that accumulated in later years. She allegedly moved westward on a wagon train when still quite youngher mother dying en route and her father dying in Salt Lake City, leaving her on her own at an early age. During the following several years she wandered about the West, working as cook, dance-hall girl, camp follower, and bawd and doing whatever necessary to earn a living. In the spring of 1876 she ended up in Deadwood, South Dakota, site of new gold strikes, and became a bullwhacker, hauling goods and machinery to the outlying camps. It was probably there that she first met Wild Bill Hickok and knew him only briefly (he was shot dead in a saloon soon after). Other disputed stories put their meeting years earlier and even vouch a marriage (September 1870) and a child (Jean Hickok McCormick, born September 25, 1873, and allegedly given up for adoption). By the late 1870s Calamity Jane had captured the imagination of several magazine-feature writers who covered the colorful early days of Deadwood. In 1891 she married Clinton (Charley) Burke, a hack driver, after living with him for seven years. Beginning in 1895 she toured with Wild West shows throughout the Midwest. In 1901 she appeared at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, but was fired for her erratic behavior and alcoholism. Her last years were marked by poverty, and she died in Terry, near Deadwood, on August 1, 1903. She was buried in Deadwood beside Hickok.

    Calamity Jane
19th century gender bender or a woman ahead of her time? Calamity Jane, whose real name is Martha Cannary or Martha Burk (1852 - 1903) was a heroine in the American West during the late 19th century. She lived in various frontier towns, especially around Deadwood, South Dakota. Calamity Jane was very much a "gender bender" and certainly a woman ahead of her time. She did not accept the restricted roles that women had to contend with during this era. Instead, Calamity Jane dressed in men's clothes, drove a stage coaches and carried a gun. She lived a hard life and could compete with any man when it came to drinking or handling a rifle. Dime novels that were sold back east transformed her into a beautiful buckskin-clad crusader for justice who, with her sweetheart Deadwood Dick, battled against outlaws in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley showed that a girl could handle a rifle as well as any man when they starred in Buffalo Bill's Wildwest shows that toured Europe at the turn of the century. The Wildwest shows were extremely popular and featured mock indian fights, rodeo events and greatly promoted the Legend of the West.
