some controversy; lives of Erasmus, Grotius, Bossuet, Fénelon. He also edited and completed the Lives of the Saints of his uncle, Alban Butler, Fearne’s Essay on Contingent Remainders and Hargrave’s edition of Coke upon Littleton’s Laws of England A complete list of Butler’s works is contained in Joseph Gillow’s Bibliographical Dictionary of English Catholics, vol. i. pp. 357-364. BUTLER, GEORGE (1774—1853), English schoolmaster and divine, was born in London and educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he afterwards became fellow, in the capacity first of mathematical lecturer, and afterwards of classical tutor. He was elected a public examiner of the university in 1804, and in the following year was one of the select preachers. As head master of Harrow (1805—f 829) his all-round knowledge, his tact and his skill as an athlete rendered his administration successful and popular. On his retirement he settled down at Gayton, Northamptonshire, a living which had been presented to him by his college in 1814. In 1836 he became chancellor of the diocese of Peterborough, and in 1842 was appointed dean of Peterborough. His few publications include some notes of Harrow, entitled Harrow, a Selection of Lists of the School between 1770 and 1828 (Peterborough, 1849). His eldest son, GEORGE BUTLER (1819—1890), was principal of Liverpool College (1866—1882) and canon of Winchester. In f852 he married Josephine Elizabeth, daughter of John Grey of Dilston. She died on the 30th of December 1906 (see her Autobiography, 1909). Mrs Josephine Butler, as she was cominonly called afterwards, was a woman of intense moral and spiritual force, who devoted herself to rescue work, and specially to resisting the “state regulation of vice “ whether by the C.D. Acts in India or by any system analogous to that of the continent in England.

Joseph Butler
Joseph Butler was born at Wantage on 18 May 1692 and died at Bath, where he had gone for his health, on 16 June 1752. He was buried in Bristol Cathedral. The son of a retired Presbyterian linen merchant, Butler was educated at a dissenting academy in Tewkesbury. He showed precocious philosophical talent, writing a series of brilliantly insightful letters to Samuel Clarke while still a student there. He eventually persuaded his father to allow him to conform to the Established Church and went up to Oriel College, Oxford, where he found himself, as he wrote in a letter to Clarke, obliged to ‘mis-spend so much time here in attending frivolous lectures and unintelligible disputations’. He eventually acquired his BA in 1718, BCL in 1721 and DCL in 1733. His first ecclesiastical appointment, in 1719, was preacher at the Rolls Chapel in London: a selection of the sermons he delivered there was published in 1726, under the title Fifteen Sermons . He became rector of Stanhope in 1725, residing there until 1733, during which time he wrote the Analogy of Religion . He returned to London to become Clerk of the Closet to Queen Caroline. Her death-bed request to the Archbishop of Canterbury that he ‘take care’ of Butler was answered by Butler’s promotion to the poorest see in England, that of Bristol. In 1740 he became also Dean of St Paul’s, a position he held for ten years. At this point he resigned Stanhope. In 1747 he declined the archbishopric of Canterbury, reportedly saying that ‘it was too late for him to try to support a falling Church’, but accepted the bishopric of Durham in 1750. His character comes through the various anecdotes about him as reserved, thoughtful, morally upright, and generous in charitable works.

Joseph Butler (1692 - 1752) Joseph Butler grew up in a Presbyterian family, but in 1715 he conformed to the Church of England and entered Oriel College, Oxford. Three years later he received his degree and was ordained, becoming the preacher at the Rolls Chapel. He remained in this post until 1726, the year that his Fifteen Sermons Preached at the Rolls Chapel were published. The sermons are, in fact, a full articulation of his moral philosophy. In 1736 he published his Analogy of Religion ... there is a superior principle of reflection or conscience in every man, which distinguishes between the internal principles of his heart, as well as his external actions: which passes judgment upon himself and them; pronounces determinatively some actions to be in themselves just, right, good; others to be in themselves evil, wrong, unjust: which, without being consulted, without being advised with, magisterially exerts itself, and approves or condemns him the doer of them accordingly.... It is by this faculty, natural to man, that he is a moral agent, that he is a law to himself....(Sermon 2) It is come, I know not how, to be taken for granted, by many persons, that Christianity is not so much a subject for enquiry but that it is, now at length, discovered to be fictitious. And accordingly they treat it as if in the present age this were an agreed point among all people of discernment, and nothing remained, but to set it up as a principal subject of mirth and ridicule, as it were by way of reprisals, for its having so long interrupted the pleasures of the world.
