Emmett High School, Emmett ID Tarzan's God If you were to mention the name of Edgar Rice Burroughs in a conversation, you might receive a response resembling, "Who? Oh yes, wasn't he a poet or something?" However, if you were to mention "Tarzan," instant recognition would greet you. Although Burroughs was the creator of the famous character, Tarzan, it seems he receives little recognition today unless it is in connection with Tarzan. Although Burroughs' Tarzan novels were his claim to fame, there is much more to him than is commonly known. I. Personal and Professional Biography Burroughs was born on September 1, 1875, in Chicago, the fourth son of George Tyler and Mary Evelyn Burroughs. His father was the owner of a battery company, and the family was quite wealthy ( Contemporary Authors 54). Little is known of Burroughs' early childhood because, for unexplained reasons, Burroughs refused to publicly recall much of anything before the age of 12 (Eaton 12). Burroughs' well- documented history began in 1890 when he was shipped by his parents to his brother's Idaho cattle ranch. As his record shows, Burroughs' parents were paranoid regarding illnesses and arranged to have him moved there after an epidemic known as La Grippe began in Chicago. Edgar wasn't the first Burroughs to be sent there. Two of his older brothers, George Jr. and Harry, had been advised to move there several years previously due to battery fume poisoning, which was supposedly making them ill.

Farmer's Tarzan Timeline Brady's ERB Chronology The intent of this Timeline is to show the cohesiveness (or lack thereof) of the imagined worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) as the author originally envisioned it. The work of a lifetime transforms in vision as that life is played out, but still lends itself to careful interpretation. Two contemporaries whose chronologies have come to be examples of the art are H.P. Lovecraft, and J.R.R. Tolkien. Their approaches are worth reviewing here. Howard Lovecraft (1890-1937) invented the stories of the Cthulhu Mythos beginning in the 1920's, but it was a haphazard business. He certainly never collated the many events he wrote about and gave fictional dates for, nor even thought of his horror stories as being a "Mythos". (He also freely offered contemporary writers to write about his creations, which has resulted in endless misunderstandings over internal chronology, let alone intellectual properties.) A chronology of the events in the Lovecraftian universe (spanning billions of years) was published as part of the roleplaying game "Call of Cthulhu" from Chaosium in the early 1980's, and was possibly never accomplished before that time.

Bit by bit he had watched his forty dollars migrate into the piles of the other players. His hopes of swelling his stake into a few hundred dollars for the trip to Parma, Idaho, were drifting away as surely as the wreathes of smoke floating in the stuffy air of the saloon. What would Mrs. Burroughs say if he returned, flat broke, to their rented room? Frowning, Ed lifted the corner of his hole card. Suspiciously, he looked at the one-eyed tinhorn who had done his best to rattle him all night. The man was surely crazy. Just as surely he had won far too many hands. Laying the side of his head with his good eye on the table top, Ed's rival peeked at his own hole card...and that of anyone else foolish enough to raise their hidden card too high. "Come on, Ed," the man to his right said, smiling smugly. "Either see his bet or fold."

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) American novelist, creator of the world famous character of Tarzan, one of the indispensable icons of popular culture. Burroughs also published science fiction and crime novels, some 26 books dealt with the Apeman. Critics have considered Burroughs's fiction often crudely written and chauvinist. His books, however, are still widely read and usually more interesting than the films. It is true that Burroughs often portrayed Africans, Arabs or Asians as evil or comic, but the stories also contain several elements that have kept them 'politically correct': Waziri warriors are brave, and his cave girls Nadara and Dejah Thoris, the princesses of Mars, are courageous and resourceful characters. "As the body rolled to the ground Tarzan of the Apes placed his foot upon the neck of his lifelong enemy, and raising his eyes to the full moon threw back his fierce young head and voiced the wild and terrible cry of his people." (from Tarzan of the Apes Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. To glamourize his own origins, Burroughs has claimed that he was born in Peking at the time that his father was military advicer to the Empress of China, and lived there, in the Forbidden City, until Burroughs was ten years old. Burroughs attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy, Orchar Lake (1892-95), where he was instructor and assistant commandant (1895-96). He served in the 7th Cavalry in the Arizona Territory (1896-97) and Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). During this period he met and heard stories of men who had fought the Sioux and Apache. After his military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898), had dealings with the American Battery Company, Chicago (1899-03). In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter).

75. Edgar Rice Burroughs: A Brief Biography Of The Chicago And Oak Park Years
good. The historical details above were obtained from the web site,Edgar Rice Burroughs 1875 1950, compiled by Bill Hillman.
http://www.oprf.com/Burroughs/biography.html
The Chicago and Oak Park Years
Captain George Tyler Burroughs of the Union Army married Mary Evaline Zieger on February 23, 1863. After the war, George and Mary Evaline move to Chicago in Fall, 1868, where George is successful in the distillery business and becomes very involved in political, civic, and social affairs. Edgar Rice Burroughs was born to the couple on February 23, 1875. He is the youngest of four boys George Tyler Jr., Henry (Harry) Studley and Frank Coleman and grew up in a three-story brick house on Chicago's West Side, at 650 (later 646) Washington Boulvevard between Lincoln and Robey Streets. In his late teens, Edgar spent part of the year working on his brother's cattle ranch (the Bar Y) along the lower Raft River in Cassia County, southeastern Idaho. Edgar's high school experiences included a period of study at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts and later the Michigan Military Academy at Orchard Lake. His time at the Michigan Academy included many adventures - quarterback of the Prep School Team of the West, 1894; escape from barracks (desertion!) in 1893; he had his own "fiery cavalry horse", "Captain", on whom he won second prize in exhibition drills. In 1893, Edgar drove the first automobile in Chicago, thanks to his father's new occupation as owner of the American Battery Company.
