John Bunyan (1628-1688)
John Bunyan was born in Elstow, a small town near Bedford, into a poor family that was looked down upon because they were seen as gypsies. He received little in the way of formal education and he was practically illiterate when he gave up school at an early age. Once Bunyan had left school, his behaviour got progressively worse until he joined the army when he was sixteen. He stayed with them for two years. Soon after he left the army he met and married Elizabeth. She was a godly woman who encouraged him to learn to read and write. Bunyan learnt to read using religious books and what he read began to change him. Bunyan was convicted of his own sinfulness during a sermon but this did not change him. Soon afterwards Bunyan had an experience of Jesus who asked him if he wanted to leave his sin and go to Heaven or keep them and go to Hell. Bunyan struggled with this for a long time. Finally, in 1653, as he was walking through a field, Bunyan suddenly realized the grace of God and his sinful condition and was he born again. His whole life was instantly transformed and he was soon baptized. In 1655, he went into ministry. He became a tremendous preacher with an avid following. His life changed when Charles II took the throne. Charles promised religious freedom but only for the establish church of England. Towards the end of 1660, Bunyan was arrested and jailed for three months. He was told that if he promised not to preach any more, he would then be released otherwise he would be banished from England. He refused to accept these terms and spent a further six years in jail. Although he was then released for a short time Bunyan was soon jailed for a further six years.

BIO:John Bunyan 1628-1688 English Baptist preacher and writer. John Bunyan was born in Elstow, England, near Bedford, where he spent most of his life. Although today he is regarded as a literary genius, he had little formal education. At the age of 16, this rough and profane young man enlisted in the army of Parliament, and saw active duty during the English Civil War. In 1647, at the age of 19, he married a young woman, who persuaded him to attend church with her regularly, where he heard the Gospel. After deep and prolonged soul struggle, he made a complete surrender to Christ, and was converted, after which he was baptized and joined the Baptist church of Bedford. Soon, he began to preach there and also in the sur- rounding villages, which caused the people to recognize in him elements of leadership as well as ability as an expositor of the Scriptures. Continuing in his trade as a tinker, he witnessed wherever he went, in addition to spending his holi- days and Sundays preaching in barns, shops, village greens, as well as in the open air. Soon great crowds began to follow him, which led to his arrest and imprisonment in 1660 for conducting a "conven- ticle"religious meeting without the permission of the State Church. When offered his freedom if he would promise not to preach, he refused and chose jail. While in prison, he stud- ied, preached, wrote, and supported his family by making and selling shoelaces. It was while a prisoner that he wrote his immortal Pilgrim's Progress in 1672. He was released and immediately resumed his ministry. During the last 16 years of his life, he was active as pas- tor, writer, helper, counselor, organizer, administrator, and pastor-in-chief to a multitude of churches and young minis- ters. Bunyan was a champion for the cause of religious lib- erty and freedom of conscience in spiritual matters. One who knew him well wrote, "The grace of God was magnified in him and by him, and a rich anointing of the Spirit was upon him. And yet this great saint was always, in his own eyes, the chiefest of sinners and the poorest of saints." He died in 1688 after riding 40 miles in a driving rain on horseback to London to preach. He was always a poor man, yet, through his example, his ministry, and especially his pen, he bequeathed inestimable riches to posterity. Ruckman '67

UNCONDITIONAL PARDON
by John Bunyan There was a certain man that had committed treason against his king; but for as much as the king had compassion on him, he sent him, by the hand of a faithful messenger, a pardon under his own hand and seal. But in the country where this poor man dwelt there were also many that sought to trouble him, by often putting him in mind of his treason, and the law that was to be executed on the offender. Now, how should this man honour his king? Surely, by believing the king's handwriting, which was his pardon! Certainly he would honour him more by so doing, than to have regard to all the clamours of his enemies continually against him. "Just so it is here. Thou having committed treason against the King of heaven, he, through compassion for Christ's sake, hath sent thee a pardon. But the devil, the law, and thy conscience, do continually seek to disturb thee, by bringing thy sin afresh into thy remembrance. But now, wouldst thou honour thy King? Why then, He that believeth the record that God hath given of his Son, hath set to his seal that God is true. "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son"

"The plain mans pathway to Heaven" (I sentieri dell'uomo verso il cielo) di Arthur Dent e "The practice of piety" (La pratica della pietà) di Lewis Bayly.
