A Short Biography
John Bunyan John Bunyan's encounter with God transformed a poorly-educated, blaspheming tinker into a bold preacher of the Gospel. As a Christian, Bunyan would also display a genius for writing, authoring more than sixty books including the classic The Pilgrim's Progress Born at Elstow, Bedfordshire, England in 1628, Bunyan attended school briefly, followed his fathers vocation of repairing household utensils (called a tinker ), and served in the parliamentary army during the English civil war. He then married a woman (whose name has been lost to history) who encouraged him to attend church, where he heard the Gospel. After a long internal struggle, Bunyan surrendered himself to Christ. Bunyan soon began to preach, and the obvious change in his life brought many people out to hear him. His messages, however, also drew the attention of government officials, who arrested him in 1660 for preaching without permission of the state church. Bunyan would spend the next twelve years in jail for his "non-conformist" ways. During his imprisonment, Bunyan wrote some of his best works, includinghis spiritual autobiography

http://www.geocities.com/charles_glenn/bunyan.htm
John Bunyan (1628-1688) John Bunyan was a 17th Century English Puritan, poet, writer and preacher who was jailed for 12 years for his dissention from the Church of England. Bunyan bears some resemblance to Chesterton, in that neither of them belonged to the academy, and yet they both possessed literary and intellectual brilliance that far exceeded most of their contemporary academics. Macaulay has called Bunyan "a living concordance" in reference to his extensive and comprehensive understanding of the Bible. Surprisingly, he began his career as an illiterate tinker, and while in jail had access to only two books: the Bible and Fox's Book of Martyrs. Despite these challenges, Bunyan went on to become one of the most influential Christians of his time ... and of all time. The book that "made him immortal" is The Pilgrim's Progress , a public-domain version of which is here: The Pilgrims Progress A comprehensive collection of John Bunyan's poetry, sermons and other writings on the web can be found at The Acacia John Bunyan Online Library HOME ABOUT ME MY WRITING ... John Bunyan (1628-1688) John Bunyan was born near Bedford in 1628. His mother died when he was 16, and his father remarried within two months of her death. Young John and his new stepmother did not get along well, which caused Bunyan to join the army. He married at the age of 20, and his new wife (who would die soon after), and the two good books she brought into the marriage with her, helped influence Bunyan, who at that time had a reputation as one of the most profane swearers in the area. He began reading Paul's epistles, but true regeneration had not yet taken place, for Bunyan considered that no man in England was as pleasing to God as he was. Later he would describe himself as the worst of pharisees, and wrote of his conversion in the well-known book Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners . He joined the local non-conformist church, and became a deacon. In 1657 his preaching gifts became apparent, and upon the death of the minister the church asked him to exercise those gifts. He was roundly criticized for his lack of education in theological matters, but locals flocked to hear "the blasphemous tinker turned preacher." Bunyan was imprisoned on several occasions for continuing to preach after the non-conformists were ejected in 1662. He could have preached privately in homes, but felt that public preaching was the most encouraging to his brethren, and for that conviction spent years in prison. Bunyan was well acquainted with the learned John Owen, who once remarked that he would give up all his learning to have Bunyan's ability to reach the heart. The Pilgrim's Progress
Author Info: John Bunyan
As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where was a Den, and
I laid me down in that place to sleep: and, as I slept, I dreamed a dream. I dreamed, and behold, I
saw a man clothed with rags, standing in a certain place, with his face from his own house, a book
in his hand, and a great burden upon his back. I looked, and saw him open the book, and read
therein; and, as he read, he wept, and trembled; and, not being able longer to contain, he brake out
with a lamentable cry, saying, "What shall I do?" In this plight, therefore, he went home and refrained himself as long as he could, that his wife and
children should not perceive his distress; but he could not be silent long, because that his trouble
increased. Wherefore at length he brake his mind to his wife and children; and thus he began to talk
to them: "O my dear wife, said he, and you the children of my bowels, I, your dear friend, am in

An Introduction from Judith Bronte "I have been amazed to discover how many people believe that John Bunyan only wrote one book, that being 'The Pilgrim's Progress'. It is true that 'The Pilgrim's Progress' has been the most published book in the world, second only to the Bible, however, John Bunyan wrote much more. He had over sixty published works, much of which has been sadly forgotten or passed over. This web site features approximately forty of John Bunyan's writings. Among them are 'Grace Abounding', 'The Holy War', 'The Life and Death of Mr. Badman', and of course, 'The Pilgrim's Progress', which features some old illustrations from the allegory. But, also be sure to check out Bunyan's lesser known works, such as, 'Christ a Complete Saviour', 'Ebal and Gerizzim', 'The Holy City', 'One Thing is Needful', which is a book of poetry, 'Saved By Grace', 'The Heavenly Footman', 'Seasonable Counsel', 'A Discourse of the House of the Forest of Lebanon', and many others. This web site is not an intellectual exploration of John Bunyan's life. My endeavor is to present him as he did himself... in his own words. Please feel free to take what you want from this web site. Republish it on the Internet, print out your favorites and pass them to friends, shout it from the rooftops, because John Bunyan's message holds as true as the day he wrote it.
