The Problem of Memoria and Virtuoso Sensibility
in Sir Thomas Browne's The Garden of Cyrus
Even during his lifetime Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682) enjoyed the reputation of being exceptionally well read and of having a stupendous memory. As a scholar and author he cultivated the ars memoriae indefatigably, arranging and storing thereby multifarious items of knowledge gained both from books and empirical observation. At the same time he was aware that the traditional mnemotechnical devices were outdated: He considered them the expression of a concept of learning no longer valid for his time. Consequently, he also called in question the old encyclopaedia of scholarly knowledge. In a paradoxical statement he stressed the necessity of eliminating part at least of traditional knowledge from memory in order to be open for new, unquestionable truths:
Knowledge is made by oblivion, and to purchase a clear and warrantable body of Truth, we must forget and part with much we know. (P: 165)
The old 'cultural technique' of ars memoriae underwent a considerable change in the course of the 17th century and was increasingly put to doubt. The main attacks turned against the 'unreasonable overload of memory', but also against the bent of scholars to parade their learning.

Browne, Thomas (1605-1682). Religio medici cum annotationibus. Argentorati: Sumptibus Friderici Spoor, 1652. "The most famous work of English literature written by a physician. Browne did not intend to have it published, but manuscripts of the work circulated privately. Two unauthorized and inaccurate editions were issued surreptitiously by the same publisher in the same year" (Morton's Medical Bibliography, Fifth Edition, Edited by Jeremy M. Norman).. "Throughout his active life Browne lived on the fringe of the scientific world. His profession was medicine; his hobbies were science and natural history. He was elected a fellow of the College of Physicians, but was never a fellow of the Royal Society of London, nor did he betray any desire for this kind of recognition. He corresponded with eminent antiquaries, such as Sir William Dugdale, Elias Ashmole, and John Aubrey. Browne is remembered as a learned man and a literary artist rather than for any important contributions to contemporary science. His qualities served to foster a general interest in science and, above all, to illuminate thought by truth concerning the material world. Browne's Religio Medici describes the religion and philosophy of a tolerant, humorous, and latitudinarian mind" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography).

FORM AND FORMLESS: SEVENTEENTH CENTURY DRAWINGS OF ROCKS IN EUROPE AND CHINA AND THE PATHS TOWARDS MODERN GEOSCIENCE AND SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT ROSENBERG, Gary D. , Indiana Univ/Purdue Univ - Indianapolis, 723 W Michigan St, Indianapolis, IN 46202-5132, grosenbe@iupui.edu By the 17th Century, the century of Steno, the artistic depiction of rocks as natural objects had clearly begun to diverge from purely aesthetic illustration in Europe. Geometric perspective feelitated the illustration of form and appearance of rocks and projected a line of art towards the development of modern geosciences. No such separation took place in China, where illustration was a path towards spiritual enlightenment, even as it emulated the processes of nature along the way. The purpose here is to present a few of the milestones of illustration along both the Western and Eastern paths, On the Western path are Bosse (1602-1676) and Desargues'(1591-1661) three-dimensional illustrations of quarry stones drawn in 1648 that firmly connect geometric perspective to the scientific description of rocks. Other examples include Serlio's (1475-1554) mid 16th Century drawings of theater sets that show that an awareness of the lateral continuity of strata was not confined to the early Renaissance genius of Leonardo.

in another; or that virtues, which are under the everlasting seal of right reason, may be stamped by opinion. ~Sir Thomas Browne, English Physician, 16051682.
    http://www.public.asu.edu/~tadams2/Quotes/quotes.htm
These are some of my favorite 7 Habits-related quotes. Foundational Principles Principles are not invented by us or by society; they are the laws of the universe that pertain to human relationships and human organizations. They are part of the human condition, consciousness and conscience... Our effectiveness is predicated upon certain inviolate principles - natural laws in the human dimension that are just as real, just as unchanging, as laws such as gravity are in the physical dimension. These principles are woven into the fabric of every civilized society and constitute the roots of every family and institution that has endured and prospered. ~Stephen R. Covey Live not by old ethics and the classical rules of honesty. Put no new names nor notions upon authentic virtues and vices. Think not that morality is ambulatory; that vices in one age are not vices in another; or that virtues, which are under the everlasting seal of right reason, may be stamped by opinion. ~Sir Thomas Browne, English Physician, 1605-1682 If you treat an individual as he is, he will remain as he is. But if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be. ~Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) German poet and philosopher

Thomas Browne, Sir : 1605 - 1682 1. Dates Born: London, 19 Oct. 1605, Died: Norwich, 19 Oct. 1682 2. Father Occupation: Merchant Thomas Browne was a silk merchant, who died when our Thomas Browne was eight years old. Our Thomas Browne was the only son. At the very least, the father was clearly prosperous. A contemporary source says that he left a "plentiful Fortune." Sir Thomas Browne went to Oxford as a Gentleman Commoner and had enough money to spend four years beyond his M.A. studying medicine on the continent. Add to this the fact that the widow remarried, to Sir Thomas Dutton, who had an estate in Ireland. The more I look at the evidence, the more I become convinced that "wealthy" is a better word to describe the circumstances in which Sir Thomas Browne grew up. 4.
