Browne, Thomas
The English author and physician, Sir Thomas Browne, was born in London on October 19, 1605. He was educated at Winchester College and Pembroke College, Oxford, before continuing his medical studies abroad, taking his M.D. at Leiden in 1633. After this, he practiced at Shibden Hall, near Halifax, where he wrote his first and greatest literary work, the Religio Medici ('Religion of a Doctor'), around 1635. This was written as "a private exercise directed to myself" - a meditation on spiritual and religious mysteries that was not originally intended for publication. After being admitted as an M.D. to Oxford, Browne settled in Norwich in 1637, and he lived and practiced there for the remainder of his life. Having been circulated informally amongst his friends, the Religio Medici was published without permission in 1642, and an authorized edition followed the year after. His next work, in 1646, was an attempt to counter common misconceptions and credulity, and was entitled Pseudodoxia Epidemica, or, Enquiries into Very many received Tenets, and commonly presumed truths

This month's choice by Glasgow University Library is the Religio Medici, the most celebrated work of one of the great seventeenth century stylists of English prose, Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682). Although never originally intended for print, this meditative essay proved to be immensely popular and established Browne's fame as a writer.
Variously described as a prose-poem, confession of faith and 'sort of private diary of the soul', the Religio Medici ('The Religion of a Physician') is hard to categorize. Although an exploration of religious thought, it cannot be described as theological, and although written by a physician, neither is it medical or scientific; indeed, as Browne explores the central themes of faith and charity, he acknowledges the need to keep religion separate from science for 'many things are true in Divinity, which are neither inducible by reason nor confirmable by sense'. The result is an intimate and private expression of his spiritual beliefs: ultimately, the nothingness of the world when seen in the perspective of eternity is emphasised. Arguing for a wide and liberal interpretation of Christianity, Browne's tolerant religious philosophy provided the chief interest for contemporary readers. Religio Medici
Sir Thomas Browne, London: 1642
Sp Coll Monro 1
The World to me is but a dream or mock-show, and we all therein but Pantalones and Anticks, to my severer contemplations. This month's choice is the Religio Medici , the most celebrated work of one of the great seventeenth century stylists of English prose, Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682). Although never originally intended for print, this meditative essay proved to be immensely popular and established Browne's fame as a writer.

Several leaves of prefatory matter including copies of correspondence between Browne and Sir Kenelm Digby were added to the 1643 edition. Although the main text was not altered substantially, there were several hundred minor changes. It is interesting to note that most of the additions to the text relate to contemporary upheaval: the first section of the second part, for example, denounces the multitude, and this addition was probably a reaction to the mass demonstrations and marches on Parliament in 1642 - a reminder that the early editions of the book appeared at the height of the first phase of the civil war. Our copy of the first pirated edition is curious for having some reader corrections to the text in the first few pages; although these demonstrate a close reading of the text, not all of the changes correspond to variants as provided by later editions.

Gubernatis (c. 1872) Pahlavi Albertus Magnus Dante Prester John ... Gubernatis Bundahis (Cosmogony) - c. 1178
The Bundahis is a Pahlavi text, meaning that it was written in the Middle Persian language. (300 B.C. - 950 A.D.) It is one of two great works about the ancient prophetic religion, Zoroastrianism, which was founded around the 12th century B.C. The work itself took an extraordinary amount of time to come together, having finally stopped growing in 1178. There are three subjects that the Bundahis covers; creation, the nature of earthly creatures, and the Kayanians (an ancient dynasty of Iran). According to the Bundahis , Gryphons were the largest and the first of all birds upon creation, and is associated with the bat. There are also remarks of "the griffin of three natures". These three natures, I can only presume to mean those of the eagle, lion, and the monstrous (chimerical). Bundahis Online Chapter 14 Chapter 19 ...
