Click here to find out more The Golden Warrior Handsome, charming, cruel, athletic, intellectual, self-centred, romantic - this famous First World War poet lived for love and died a sad symbol of a 'lost generation'. Born at Rugby School in Warwickshire, where his father was a master, Rupert Chawner Brooke (1887-1915) was a stunningly beautiful boy who was well known to his contemporaries as a brilliant scholar and a supporter of the Fabian Society (a socialist organisation still in existence today). He was educated at Watergate Road Prep school in Hillbrow and then King's College, Cambridge, where he won a fellowship in 1913. During his time in Cambridge, Brooke met Edward Marsh (1872-1953), the central figure of a group of notable British poets and artists of the early 20th century. At first Marsh was reluctant to read his poems because he "liked him so much" that he "should have hated not to like his work". However, after Brooke stayed with him in his flat in Raymond Buildings, London, Marsh was inspired to compile an anthology of modern verse under the title of Georgian Poetry Brooke had started writing and publishing poetry when he was still a very young man, and he also befriended many important literary, political and social figures of his day, such as E.M. Forster, Maynard Keynes, Virginia Woolf, and Edward Thomas. Following a nervous breakdown in 1911 he spent several months travelling and writing about Europe, the USA, New Zealand and the South Seas - where he met and fell in love with a local girl called Taatamata, for whom he penned

Hans arbejder omfatter bl.a. Poems 1914 and Other Poems New Numbers Letters from America (1916) og en afhandling om John Webster (1916), der udkom efter hans tidlige død. Flere af hans digte betragtes nu som klassiske – bl.a. fædrelandsdigtet ”The Old Vicarage, Granchester” samt ”Heaven”, ”Tiara Tahiti”, ”I strayed about the deck” og hans fem krigssonetter (herunder ”The Soldier” (’If I should die’), der gjorde ham til hele Englands krigsdigter. Brooke omkom som søofficer under togtet til Dardanellerne og begravedes på øen Scyros. Jvf. udgivelsesliste Nomos modtager gerne relevante indlæg om ovennævnte Citater The Old Vicarage, Grantchester

Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) The Soldier If I should die, think only this of me, That there's some corner of a foreign field That is forever England. There shall be In that rich earth a richer dust concealed, A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware, Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam, A body of England's, breathing English air, Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home. And think, this heart, all evil shed away, A pulse in the Eternal mind, no less Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given, Her sight and sounds; dreams happy as her day; And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness, In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Updated - Sunday, 2 September, 2001 Rupert Brooke (1887-1915) was born into a well-to-do, academic family; his father was a housemaster at Rugby School, where Rupert was educated before going on to King's College, Cambridge. He was a good student and athlete, and - in part because of his strikingly handsome looks - a popular young man who eventually numbered among his friends E. M. Forster, Maynard Keynes, Virginia Woolf, and Edward Thomas. Even as a student he was familiar in literary circles and came to know many important political, literary and social figures before the war. Brooke actually saw little combat during the war; he contracted blood-poisoning from a small neglected injury and died in April 1915, in the Aegean. Brooke's reputation, aside from the myth of the fallen "golden warrior" that his friends set about creating almost immediately after his death, rests on the five war sonnets of 1914. Some of his earlier poetry - "Fish," Helen and Menelaus," and "Heaven" - however, shows us a much different side of Brooke's talent and temperament. Some critics doubt that he would have written the sonnets later in the war had he lived. They show an enthusiasm that most soldiers and poets eventually lost; another poet

RUPERT BROOKE
"A young Apollo, golden-haired,
Stands dreaming on the verge of strife,
Magnificently unprepared
For the long littleness of life."
- Frances Cornford A gifted and handsome man, Brooke's early death in World War One contributed to his idealized image in the interwar period. After leaving Cambridge, Brooke studied in Germany and travelled in Italy, but his favourite pastime was rambling in the countryside around the village of Grantchester, which he celebrated in his poem, "The Old Vicarage, Grantchester" (1912). This piece was typical of the "Georgian" school of poetry, practised before war broke out by poets including Hilaire Belloc, Robert Graves, Walter de la Mare and Siegfried Sassoon. This poetry was lyrical, taking its inspiration from nature and the countryside, and is now generally disregarded as lifeless and conventional. Brooke's poems were published in 1911, and after a year wandering in the North America and the South Seas, he was commissioned into the Royal Navy. After taking part in a disastrous expedition to Antwerp, he sailed for the Dardanelles. He never reached them, dying of septicaemia on a hospital ship off Skyros, where he was buried in an olive grove. Rupert Brooke caught the optimism of the opening months of the war, with his wartime sonnets 1914 (1915) expressing an idealism in the face of death that contrasts strongly to poetry published later in the war and after his death. They brought him immediate - albeit posthumous - fame.

He was born in 1887 in a very wealthy family and was educated at Rugby School and at King's college, Cambridge. He was said to be strikingly handsome and the unfair reasons why he was considered a popular war poet was because of both his 5 poems dealing with war and his appearance. In fact, Brooke's experience of war was very limited and he was not a war poet in the sense S. Sassoon was. Yet, he had a strong symbolic role: he was a great and beautiful warrior turned into a myth. Speaking of Brooke, Yeats said he was "the most handsome man in Britain" and Frances Cornford that he was "a young Apollo, with golden hair". Churchill himself paid him an homage in 1926 in an article entitled "Obituary": there is a strong emphasis on Brooke's romantic death (he died of a fever in 1915) and the construction of the heroic figure. His early death was symbolic of the death of a whole generation of dedicated English youth. Brooke's poetry at once reflected the mood of the time. He became a hero for those who needed heroes and that is at the detriment of his poetry. He was wrongly considered as a war poet: he was a leading figure of the Georgian Movement, a prewar poet. The most famous poems from
