Cedar Crest College Emily Bronte Biography
Emily Jane Bronte was born on July 30, 1818 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England. Many economic, religious and social changes were taking place in England at this time. She was the fifth out of six children born to Patrick and Maria (Branwell) Bronte. Both parents had some literary talents. Patrick was an amateur poet, and wrote four books, and Maria published an essay. In 1820 the Bronte family moved to a secluded and dismal village on the moors called Haworth where Patrick Bronte was appointed as a clergyman of the church. Shortly after Emily’s third birthday, Mrs. Bronte died of cancer and her sister Elizabeth Branwell came to reside with the family to help raise the children and teach them household duties. The four eldest Bronte daughters: Elizabeth, Maria, Charlotte and Emily were sent away in 1824 to a school for daughters of poverty-stricken clergy, in Cowan Bridge, Lancashire. Charlotte Bronte illustrated this infamous school with its harsh and inhumane conditions in her famous novel, Jane Eyre . In 1825 an epidemic broke out in the school and took the lives of the two oldest sisters; Maria died in May and Elizabeth in June of that same year. When Charlotte caught the illness a few months later Emily became so distraught that both girls had to be sent home.

V dlouhe rade znamenitych anglickych spisovatelek devatenacteho stoleti zaujimaji predni misto sestry Bronteovy. Nejstarsi a nejslavnejsi z nich Charlotta (1816-1855), jez dosla uznani hned za sveho zivota, je nasemu ctenarstvu dobre znama, jezto vsecky tri jeji romany Jane Eyre, Shirley a Vilette jsou do cestiny prelozeny. Lze snad dodat, ze Masaryk oba posledni romany zaradil mezi dvacet nejlepsich knih vubec. Jediny roman mladsi sestry Emilie, v urcitem smyslu nejzvlastnejsi a nejgenialnejsi ze znamenite te trojice, vychazi v novem vydani. A mozna, ze i Anna (1820-1849), nejmladsi, osvedcila dosti zajimavosti, aby se i jejim dilem doplnil ceskemu ctenari celkovy obraz sester Bronteovych.
Rodina Bronteova, ona znama "rodina basniku tam v te opustenosti na severnich smutnych slatinach", jak ji kdesi nazyva Thackeray, nalezi k onem velmi zajimavych zjevum sociologickym, kde cele rody - trebas po nekolik pokoleni - byvaji nadany umelecky. Emily Brontë July 30 December 19
Emily Bronte (pen name: Ellis Bell) Emily Brontë was the middle of the three famous Brontë sisters who were novelists and poets. She wrote under the name Ellis Bell. Emily Brontë is credited as one of the major sources of inspiration for Emily Dickinson poetry (the other was Ralph Waldo Emerson). Her major work, Wuthering Heights , and her only known novel, was often treated in the 19th century as a work of immorality, too much passion. Critics do not know when Wuthering Heights was written nor how long it took to write. Some critics have argued that Branson Brontë, brother to the three sisters, wrote this book, but most critics disagree.

Emily Bronte
Emily Bronte was sister to Anne and Charlotte Bronte. Also in the family was their brother Branwell (1817-1848) and two sisters, Maria and Elizabeth, who both died in childhood. The family moved to Haworth, now part of Keighley, in 1820 when their father, Patrick Bronte (1777-1861), became Rector there. After their mother died from cancer her sister came to look after the children. Their childhood, spent in the sole companionship of one another on the wild Yorkshire moors of England, was happy. The children invented two fantasy worlds, Gondal and Angria , about which they wrote stories and poems. Her single novel, Wuthering Heights , is an intense and powerful story of love and revenge set in the remote and wild moors of 18th-century Yorkshire. , Emily was later prone to creating motherless characters. She got along best with Anne, the youngest, and they created the world of Gondal together . At 17, Emily went to the Roe Head School (her first experience with school since a very brief stint at the infamous Clergy Daughters' School) where Charlotte was then teaching. Emily managed to stay only three months before her nerves became too frazzled and she had to go home. She simply couldn't stand not being able to write and think about Gondal as much as she wanted to Emily found a teaching job at Law Hill School in September 1838. The hours were grueling: 6 AM to 11 PM, with half an hour's break, and though Emily managed to do all right in her first term , her health broke under the stress and she returned home around April 1839. She never again attempted to find any kind of a job. In 1842, Charlotte dragged Emily to a school in Brussels . Emily did well (her teachers were especially impressed with her clear, smooth writing style) but made no friends, as was typical for her. She went back home as soon as she possibly could. Emily had been writing poetry all this time, mostly on Gondal, and in the autumn of 1845, Charlotte found these poems and read them. She then approached her sister and urged her to publish the works. Emily was furious, and Anne interceded, giving her own Gondal poems to Charlotte to help make peace. After editing the poems to remove some of the Gondal-ness, Emily agreed to the publication of
