Anne Bronte Charlotte Bronte Emily Bronte For the next few years, the Bronte children were taught at home. They invented games and told imaginary stories to each other. Charlotte attended Miss Wooler's school at Roe Head for one year in 1831, then returned home and taught her sisters. Charlotte returned to Roe Head as a teacher in 1835, but after suffering from depression and ill health, she resigned from her position. It was at Roe Head that Charlotte met her lifelong friend Ellen Nussey. Her many letters to Nussey have served as the best documentation of her life. The Bronte sisters worked in various schools during the next few years. Anne worked briefly as a governess in 1839 and from 1841-1845. Emily spent several months teaching at Miss Patchett's school at Law Hill. Charlotte and Emily had plans to open their own school at Haworth, and in 1842, they travelled to Brussels at their aunt's expense to learn German and improve their French. When their aunt died 8 months later, the sisters returned for the funeral. Emily never returned to Brussels, but Charlotte returned as a pupil-teacher. Her time in Belgium was not happy, in part because of her attraction to her married employer. Charlotte returned to Haworth the next year. The dream of opening a school was never realised. In the autumn of 1845, Charlotte discovered some poems written by Emily. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne soon realised they had all been secretly writing verse. The next year, they published a book of poems at their own expense entitled Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. The pseudonyms were chosen to match the first letter of their names. They only sold two copies of the book, but each sister already had additional writing plans in the works.

"Emily Jane Bronte was born at Thornton in Yorkshire on 30 July 1818, the fifth of six children of Patrick and Maria Bronte (nee Branwell). Two years later, her father was appointed perpetual curate of Haworth, a small, isolated hill village surrounded by moors. Her mother died shortly after her third birthday and she and her sisters and brother were brought up by their aunt, Elizabeth Branwell. Apart from a few short periods, she remained in Haworth. Her only close friendships were those with her brother Branwell and her sisters Charlotte and Anne; only three perfunctory letters by her survive. "From accounts by those who knew Emily Jane Bronte, there emerges a consistent portrait of a reserved, courageous woman with a commanding will and manner. In the biographical note to the 1850 edition of Wuthering Heights , Charlotte Bronte attributes to her sister 'a secret power and fire that might have informed the brain and kindled the veins of a hero', while Monsignor Heger, who taught her in Brussels, was impressed by her 'powerful reason' and 'strong, imperious will'. Click on any of the photographs for a larger view Haworth, an attractive village in West Yorkshire, is in an area often called Bronte country because of its association with the Bronte authors - Emily Bronte, Charlotte Bronte and Anne Bronte. The family moved to the Haworth parsonage in 1820, (picture one), which is now the Bronte Parsonage Museum. Picture two shows the main street with the Black Bull public house on the right, a regular drinking haunt of Branwell, their brother. The two following photographs are the apothecary where Branwell Bronte bought his opium. Branwell was an alcoholic and an opium addict, addictions that ultimately led to his death at the age of 31. Haworth parsonage Haworth's main street Apothecary plaque The village stocks are to the right of the steps leading to the parish church (the Church of St. Michael and All Angels) where the Brontes' father, Patrick, was the curate. The Bronte family are not buried in the churchyard but in a vault beneath the church itself. Anne Bronte, the youngest of the three sisters, died in Scarborough and is buried in St. Mary's churchyard, overlooking the sea. All died of tuberculosis at a young age. Charlotte (1816-1855) was 38, Emily (1818-1848) died aged 30, and Anne was only 29 when she died in 1849. Patrick outlived all his family and died in 1861 at the age of 84. There were three other children in the family apart from the famous authors - Maria 1814-1825, Elizabeth 1815-1825 and his only son, Branwell 1817-1848.

Charlotte Bronte oldest of the three famous Brontë sisters, author of one of the most famous novels in the English language.
Charlotte, the oldest of the three Brontë sisters, together with Emily and Anne formed part of a great literary Irish family. Formal education was discontinued when two of the other sisters in the family died from Tuberculosis. Their father, a clergyman, undertook their education but the sisters seemd largely to have educated themselves by reading extensively and writing stories from an early age. Charlotte became a governess and began to write to earn money. Her first novel, The Professor , was never published; however, Jane Eyre was an immediately sucessful and has since been regarded as one of the most famous novels in the English Language. Vilette was based on her experiences in Brussels.
Charlotte's writings were considered to be unconventional and not appropriate for a women writier of that time. She wrote under the pseudonym of Currer Bell.
Charlotte outlived her sisters. She eventually died while pregnant, within a few months of her marriage.

Biography BRONTE, EMILY JANE (July 30, 1818-December 19, 1848), novelist and poet, was the middle in age of the three famous Bronte sisters, two years younger than Charlotte, a year and a half older than Anne. Like them, she was born at Thornton, Yorkshire, and moved in early childhood to Haworth, where she spent most of the remainder of her short life.
With Charlotte and her two oldest sisters, she was sent in 1824 to the Clergy Daughters School at Cowan Bridge which cost the lives of Maria and Elizabeth, and from which Emily and Charlotte were rescued just in time. A schoolmate remembered that Emily was the pet of the school, and she does not seem to have been any unhappier there than were the rest of them. She was only three at her mother's death, and Emily retained no memory of her. It must have been some time between 1825 and 1835 (whether occasioned by shock from being locked in the room where her mother died, or simply the result of the strange surroundings of all the Brontes in their childhood) that Emily developed that almost-mania against restraint, that agony under regimentation, which made schools and governess' positions alike, torture and imprisonment to her thereafter. In any event, when Charlotte took Emily with her as a pupil to Miss Wooler's school at Roe Head in 1835, three months of it almost finished her. She had to be brought back before she died of the experience. Again, in 1837, she acted as governess to a family in Halifax for six months, which was all that she could endure; the position besides was an onerous one, and she was supposed to be on constant duty for sixteen hours a day.
