Charlotte Bronte
Charlotte Bronte was born at Thornton, Yorkshire, the third child of six of the Reverend Patrick Bronte and Maria Branwell Bronte. The Reverend was later appointed as curate in the small village of Haworth on the Yorkshire Mores where Charlotte spent most of her life. After her mother died, her father sent the five girls to school at Cowan Bridge. When a fever broke out at the school, the two older sisters succumbed to the disease. Charlotte, Emily and Anne wee then brought home and cared for by their Aunt Elizabeth. The girls severely affected by the death of their sisters spent much of their time engaging in activities of fantasy and imagination. A set of toy soldiers which had been given to their brother, Patrick, provided the inspiration for the girls writing. When Charlotte's father's health began to fail, he sent her away to Roehead School as he wanted her to be able to be independent. Mrs. Wooler, her teacher, helped Charlotte fill in the missing parts of her education. She earned several awards for outstanding scholarship and in 1932 declined a teaching position at Roehead. Charlotte instead, returned home to instruct her sisters. In the mornings they would spend time on their studies and in the afternoon, they would draw and spend time on the moor. After dinner they would use the time to sew and have tea. Charlotte also used this time to write fantasies.

Life, believe, is not a dream
So dark as sages say;
Oft a little morning rain
Foretells a pleasant day.
Sometimes there are clouds of gloom,
But these are transient all;
If the shower will make the roses bloom,
O why lament its fall?
Rapidly, merrily, Life's sunny hours flit by, Gratefully, cheerily Enjoy them as they fly! What though Death at times steps in, And calls our Best away? What though sorrow seems to win, O'er hope, a heavy sway? Yet Hope again elastic springs, Unconquered, though she fell; Still buoyant are her golden wings, Still strong to bear us well. Manfully, fearlessly, The day of trial bear, For gloriously, victoriously, Can courage quell despair! (Life) Long ago I wished to leave "The house where I was born;" Long ago I used to grieve, My home seemed so forlorn. In other years, its silent rooms Were filled with haunting fears; Now, their very memory comes

Derbyshire's Literary Connections
Derbyshire and the Peak District has not produced a Charles Dickens or a William Shakespeare but has attracted a wide range of literary visitors and admirers over the years. As far back as 1586 Elizabethan historian William Camden, was writing about the Wonders of the Peak, naming nine of them in his Britannia. Thomas Hobbes published his De Mirabilibus Pecci: Concerning the Wonders of the Peak in Darby-shire in 1636, followed by Charles Cotton's The Wonders of the Peak in 1681, probably the first successful guidebook to the region. The Wonders were Pooles Cavern and St Annes's Well at Buxton, Peak Cavern at Castleton, Eldon Hole, Mam tor, the Ebbing and Flowing Well at Barmoor Clough, Peak Forest and later Chatsworth House. Then came Celia Fiennes, who from 1685 until 1703 travelled extensively around England alone apart from two servants. On her journey Celia kept notes in her journal about the places she visited and provided the first comprehensive survey of England since Camden. Celia Fiennes died in 1741. Her journal was discovered in 1885 and published three years later under the title, 'Through England on a Side Saddle'. Of Derbyshire, Celia Fiennes wrote, 'All Derbyshire is full of steep hills, and nothing but the peakes of hills as thick one by another is seen in most of the county which are steepe which makes travelling tedious, and the miles long, you see neither hedge nor tree but only low drye stone walls round some ground, else its only hills and dales as thick as you can imagine,'

The next 20 years were devoted to studying, educating her siblings, and a few short terms as a governess. Meanwhile, when she was at home she enjoyed an active creative life with her sisters and brother in which they invented an imaginary world and wrote stories and poems about the people who lived there. Financial support from relatives allowed Charlotte to study for almost two years in Brussels, with the thought of opening her own school with her sisters. When the school failed to work out, she began to cast about for other ways for the family to earn a living.
