How familiar are you with outstanding literature by African-Americans?
Review this list prepared by Black Issues Book Review (Nov-Dec. 99, pp 33-52) to identify excellent works to put on your "must read" list for 2002!
Writing in 1897, W.E.B. DuBois, a scholar with a freshly minted Ph.D. in history from Harvard and cofounder that same year of the American Negro Academy, declared that Black America represented "a nation stored with wonderful possibilities of culture." I doubt that even DuBois, the prophet who would predict in 1900 that "the problem of the twentieth century was the problem of the color line" and in 1909 foresee the urgent need of an Encyclopaedia Africana, could have imagined the remarkable accomplishments in the arts that African Americans would achieve in the last century of the millennium. Just think about it: In the past one hundred years, our people have created ragtime, the classic blues, gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues, soul and hip hop, in music; the modernist collage techniques of Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence in the visual arts; and redefined fundamentally the very possibilities the human form can assume in the dance, from the Cakewalk and the Black Bottom, the Twist and the Bougaloo, from Josephine Baker and Katherine Dunham to Arthur Mitchell and Judith Jamison, James Brown, Michael Jackson, and Savion Glover. And despite all of these grand manifestations of what the literary scholar Benjamin Brawley called "The Negro Genius," our people's accomplishments in the literary arts are unparalleled for a people who were in 1900, merely thirty-five years "up from slavery," as Booker T. Washington put it.

On this first day of January 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The document declared that slaves in states that had rebelled against the Union were "then, thenceforward, and forever free," and provided for African-American soldiers to enlist in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War. January 2
On this day in 1990, David Norman Dinkins began his first working day as mayor of New York City. After defeating former mayor Edward Koch in the September Democratic primaries and then, by a small margin, beating Republican Rudolph Guiliani in the general election, Dinkins had become the first African-American mayor of America’s largest city. January 3
On this day in 1985, Leontyne Price, the first African-American to gain international fame as a star of grand opera gave her farewell performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, playing the title role in Verdi’s Aida January 5
Today is George Washington Carver Day, named in honor of the brilliant agricultural chemist who died on this day in 1934. Nicknamed the "Peanut Man" and the "Wizard of Tuskegee," Carver headed the agricultural department of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and was one of the most prominent scientists of his day. He was renowned for finding new uses for everyday items. Carver discovered 188 ways to use the sweet potato and 300 uses for the peanut including peanut milk, dye, a scrubbing powder, sweets, flour and livestock feed.

by Samuel A. Sizer
Guide to Selected Manuscript Collections was compiled in 1976 by Samuel A. Sizer, then Curator of Special Collections in the University of Arkansas Libraries. It contains brief descriptions of 211 collections, including a few that had not been processed at that time. The on line version updates the 1976 Sizer Guide to reflect work done on those collections in the division since then, and entries are integrated into the alphabetical list and the subject lists of electronic finding aids elsewhere on the Special Collections web site. A paper copy of the complete original Guide is available. At present, some manuscript collections in the division are accessible only through typewritten finding aids in the division reading room. However, as time and other resources permit, these are being converted to computer files and published on the Special Collections web site. Meanwhile, researchers should contact the division for further information. A B C D ... Y A] ALEXANDER, HENRY MACMILLAN, 1905-1969.

Notes on West Indies books:- There are many important historical books on the West Indies. Some of the best general works include Aspinall's 'British West Indies' (1912), Coke's 'History of the West Indies' (1808), Edward's 'History, the civil and commercial, of British colonies in the West Indies' (1793) and Southey's 'Chronological history of the West Indies' (1827). A rare genealogical work, Vere Oliver's 'Caribbeana' has been republished by a friend of mine. Documents 16A-16Z: "Votes for Women: A Symposium by Leading Thinkers of Colored America," The Crisis (August 1915): 178-92. Introduction For the symposium Du Bois gathered "leading thinkers of colored America" men and women, clergy and laity, professionals and poets, as well as leaders of women's organizations. The result was a resounding symphony of support for the enfranchisement of black women. VOTES FOR WOMEN A Symposium by Leading Thinkers of Colored America Document 16A: THE LOGIC OF WOMAN SUFFRAGE
by Rev. Francis J. Grimke A
Pastor 15th St. Presbyterian Church,
Washington, D.C.
I (2). The average woman is just as well qualified to form an opinion as to the character and qualifications of those who are to be entrusted with power as the average man. The average man is in no sense superior to the average woman, either in point of intelligence, or of character. The average woman, in point of character, is superior to the average man; and, in so far as she is, she is better fitted to share in the selection of public officials. (3). To deprive her of the right to vote is to govern her without her consent, which is contrary to the fundamental principle of democracy. That principle is clearly expressed in the Declaration of Independence, where we read: “Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.” Under this principle, which is a just principle women have the same right to vote as men have. Are they not governed? And being governed, can the government imposed upon them without their consent? It is simply to treat them as minors and inferiors, which every self-respecting woman should resent and continue to resent until the stigma is removed from her sex. The time is certainly coming, and coming soon I believe, when this just claim on the part of women will be fully recognized in all truly civilized countries.
