The Life of Anglo-Irish Dramatist Dion Boucicault (1820?-1890)

he Anglo-Irish dramatist Dionysius "Dion" Lardner Boucicault achieved his first great success when he was just twenty . Born in Dublin in late December 1820, Boucicault had been sent to England to complete his education. At Dr. Jamieson's Academy, Brentford, he began writing dramatic sketches. Shortly afterward, he took up a stage career under the pseudonym Lee Moreton, playing in his own Legend of Devil's Dyke at Brighton in October 1838. Then, through a lucky error occasioned by his stage name, Boucicault managed to get Charles Matthews, manager of Covent Garden, to read an unsolicited manuscript of what (with the editing and assistance of the actor-manager team of Matthews and Madame Vestris) became London Assurance . When the comedy opened on 4 March, 1841, the young dramatist's future seemed assured. The play established him as "the cleverest, raciest, and most theatrically inventive playwright of his age," as Andrew Parkin remarks in Victorian Britain, An Encyclopedia

Collection of eighty street ballads on forty sheets, mostly with a woodcut printed at London, the majority by J. Catnach (1820ñ1830). London: n.p., n.d. University of Minnesota Libraries. WILSON Rare Books Quarto 820.1 C683. Half-sheet broadside, pasted to album leaf 3.
The Wearing of the Green
177, Union-street, Borough,óS. E.
    Farewell! for I must leave thee, my own, my native shore,
    And doomed in foreign lands to dwell, may never see thee more:
    For laws, our tyrant laws, have said that seas must roll between
    Old Erin and her faithful sons, that loved to wear the green. Oh! we love to wear the green, Oh! how we love the green,
    On native land we cannot stand for wearing of the green,
    Yet wheresoe'er the exile lives, tho' oceans roll between,
    Thy faithful sons will fondly sing "The wearing of the green." My father loved his country, and sleeps within her breast,
    While I that would have died for her, may never be so blest;
    Those tears my mother shed for me, how bitter they'd have been
    If I had proved a traitor to "The wearing of the green."

End 1890: DIONYSIUS IS DEAD; LONG LIVE DIONYSIUS TOP This volume could have started with the London production of Ibsen’s A Doll House in 1889, for that was a seminal event in the development of the New Drama, but 1890 has been chosen for the beginning of the modern period because in that year two events occurred, involving British playwrights of Irish origin, that loom even larger as symbols of history—the death of Dion Boucicault, one of the nineteenth century’s most popular, prolific, and innovative playwrights, and the birth of “Ibsenism” at the hands of George Bernard Shaw, two years away from writing his first play. The two events symbolize the death of the old order in the British theater and the rebirth of that theater in a new form. Shedding light on these two events, a third significant event of 1890 was the publication of the first two volumes of Frazer’s

DION LARDNER BOUCICAULT

c. 1820 - 1890) actor and dramatist
Born Dublin Born 26 December 1820 or 20 December 1822, probably the son of Dr Dionysius Lardner, a boarder in his mother’s house. Starting in the theatre in England as an actor, he began to write plays and had a great success with a comedy, London Assurance (1841). He had the ‘trick of the theatre’ and is credited with about 150 plays, including translations and adaptations of novels. His three Irish plays — The Colleen Bawn (1860) (based on Gerald Griffin's novel The Collegians Arrah na Pogue (1864), and The Shaughrawn (1874) — owed much of their popularity to his wife’s portrayal of the heroines. Boucicault went to New York in 1853 and in 1859 created a sensation with The Octoroon , the first play to treat seriously of the Black American population. He returned to New York in 1872, where in his later years his fortunes declined, and he ended as a poorly paid teacher of acting, dying there on 18 September 1890. Inventor (in metallurgy, mostly) and manufacturer; born in Taunton MA , with little education he became a goldsmith. He had success for a while replicating and manufacturing "britannia ware", a cheap substitute for silver in Taunton, but soon sold the works to their apprentices (it became known as Reed and Barton, which continued in business). In 1834, he went to Boston as superintendent of Alger's Foundry and Ordnance Works, or the South Boston Iron Works, where he achieved great success, casting the first brass cannon made in the United States. His biggest success was the invention of a journal box (for enclosing train axles, ball bearings, and lubrication), U.S. Patent #1252, 7/17/39, for which he received large royalty fees. His suggestion of an alloy to be used for the bearings, made parenthetically, was more important than the invention itself (he is not regarded as the actual inventor or the alloy, and presumably got no royalties from it). Was committed to the McLean Asylum in Somerville, MA
