46. The Parting Glass: Peace And Love
The song appears in Dion Boucicault's (18201890) play Arrah-na-Pogue which dealtwith the Fenian rising of 1865 (for more on the Fenians, see Medley ).

The Pogues dedicated this release "to the 95 people who died at Hillsborough Football Ground." On 15 April 1989, supporters of the Liverpool Football Club were crushed to death at a FA cup semi-final match against Nottingham when police opened a gate which allowed hundred of fans to pour through onto an already packed terrace. The official death total is now at 96 (95 died at the stadium, one later in hospital) with another 730 injured, and to date, British justice has been unable or unwilling to hold any authorities (police officials who ordered the gate opened, sports/stadium officials who organized the event, etc.) responsible for the deaths. Also, on the front cover photo, note the boxer's right hand (he's got six fingers). White City
(Shane MacGowan) White City is a section of London that at one time was home to a dog racing track. The melody for this one is based on " The Curragh of Kildare , a song by Christy Moore (available on his The Time has Come here to listen to the melody and here for the original Burns poem; thanks Hoddle for the heads up on the Burns info). "Curragh" is an English transliteration from the Irish "An Currach" meaning "The Racecourse" and the

They made him chief candandrum, the nabob of them all They called him "Jigaboojay" and they decked him out to gay that he wrote to Dublin Bay to his sweetheart just to say Oh I have rings on my fingers and bells on my toes with elephants to ride upon, my little Irish Rose. Library of American Civilization titles available free on the Web
Compiled by Terry Ballard
Introduction
This project grew out of the frustration that our users often felt when using the Library of American Civilization micro-microfiche cards owned by our library. While the titles add depth to our holdings in 19th century American works, the cards could only be read on one machine in our library, and the quality was often poor at best. One day it occurred to me to hire a student to check the list of LAC holdings in our opac against the list of online titles maintained by the University of Pennsylvania. We found hundreds of hits. We added links to those records in our catalog and then posted the information to this file. The process was repeated in 2002, and we added 90 more titles. Also, I made a complete check of the links and corrected dozens of titles that had changed locations. Since this check will not be repeated for some time, plan to check the link above when any of these links do not work. Adams, Henry, 1838-1918.

In this book Nicholas Grene explores political contexts for some of the outstanding Irish plays from the nineteenth century to the contemporary period. The politics of Irish drama have previously been considered primarily the politics of national self-expression. Here it is argued that Irish plays, in their self-conscious representation of the otherness of Ireland, are outwardly directed towards audiences both at home and abroad. The political dynamics of such relations between plays and audiences is the book's multiple subject: the stage interpretation of Ireland from The Shaughraun to Translations; the contentious stage images of Yeats, Gregory and Synge; reactions to revolution from O'Casey to Behan; the post-colonial worlds of Purgatory and All that Fall; the imagined Irelands of Friel and Murphy, McGuinness and Barry. With its fundamental reconception of the politics of Irish drama, this book represents a new view of the phenomenon of Irish drama itself.

      Dion Boucicault
      Boucicault (originally Boursiquot), , Dion(ysius Lardner) (1820 - 1890)
Playwright, born in Dublin and educated at University College School, London,
began his career as an actor and achieved great success with his comedy London Assurance (1841),
written under the pseudonym of Lee Morton. He subsequently wrote and adapted some 200 plays,
including The Corsican Brothers (1852, from the French), The Poor of New York (1857),
The Colleen Bawn; or the brides of Garryowen (1860), Arra-na-Pogue; or The Wicklow Wedding (1864),
and The Shaughraun (1874). One of the dominant figures of 19th-cent. theatre,
his career was marked by spectacular successes and reverses, and he was responsible for important innovations,
With the rise of realism and the emergence of Ibsen and G. B. Shaw, his work fell out of fashion,
but it influenced O'Casey, who praised his 'colour and stir', and some of his plays have been successfully revived.
There is a life by R. Fawkes, 1979.
