On the 14th August 1773 James Boswell and Samuel L Johnson set off on an 83 day tour of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland aiming to spend a great deal of that time in Skye. They recorded their travels and made observations and comparisons of the people and their situation with the civilised society of their day. This was a period of immense social and economic change. The Highland Clearances were just beginning. Johnson, aged 63, already well known for his 'Dictionary of the English Language (1755)' and as an author, playwright and editor, was in poor health. He was seeking proof to support his theories on the human condition. Boswell, aged 32, had previously published 'An Account of Corsica (1768)' but was still relatively unknown. He benefited greatly from being seen in the company of such a great man. The results of their partnership were two of the most important literary works of the age. Johnson's 'A journey to the Western Isles of Scotland' was a formal and sombre look at the western isles and its people combined with serious philosophical insight. Boswell's 'Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides (1785)' was a warm, friendly and often humorous collection highlighting the more human and down to earth aspect of their travels.

THE LAIRD OF AUCHINLECK BOSWELL (JAMES, 1740-1795, biographer of Samuel Johnson ) FINE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED ('James Boswell'), to Andrew Gibbs ('Andrew'), the overseer of his Auchinleck estate, beginning 'A thousand things have hindered me too long from writing to you' [including preparing and seeing the extensively revised and augmented second edition of his Life of Johnson through the press], he notes that 'next month I am going abroad on a tour of Holland and Flanders and to pass some time with the combined armies', and sends detailed instructions for dealing with tenants, building, road- mending, planting, fencing, the choice of a new minister, managing woodland and other similar concerns, 4 full pages, quarto, a short postscript dated 3 June on a separate leaf and printed with the letter in 1924 has become detached and is among the Boswell papers at Yale (MS.*L.585), London 31 May 1793 'Long before Boswell became laird he had begun to learn about estate management, so that by the time of his father's death [in 1782] he was a proud and knowledgeable administrator of the property. He enjoyed his patriarchal role as master of some eight hundred men, women and children who dwelt upon his lands, which extended to over 24,000 acres.' This is a warm, open and humane letter from master to servant, demonstrating Boswell's concern for his dependents, fulfilling his decision that no tenant 'upon my estate has reason to fear that I will be a hard master' (Pottle, biography ii, p 376), and his belief that 'an affectionate tenantry is better than a high rental' (

Special Collections Exhibitions Enlarging the prospects of happiness Introduction Great cities of Italy ... Check lists For an English audience, Italy was both alluring and alarming. Abounding with classical ruins and legendary statues and paintings, Italy was also separated from England by a precipitous route over the Alps and, after Henry VIII, by a fundamental religious divide. Rome was the ultimate aim first of pious pilgrims and later of the Grand Tourist. Italy was the best-known destination for English travellers, and few visitors would have set out without having read at least one of the major accounts of Italian attractions.
    Classics graduate and grand tourist
A grand tourist himself, Joseph Addison made good use of his classical studies to compile what became the foremost English guide to antiquities in Italy. Essentially a geographical annotation of Latin literature and history, Addison's work addresses young gentlemen steeped in a classical education. The title Remarks indicates its rather casual structure and easy familiarity, though most of us would find its constant and frequently obscure allusions annoying.

    Boswell and Brydon
By the second half of the eighteenth century, the grand tour had been so frequently recounted that Boswell and Brydone both sought more remote corners of Italy. Boswell's usual irrepressible enthusiasm and undaunted effrontery secured him the acquaintance of Pascal Paoli, a freedom fighter of his day, while Boswell's published account (1768) earned for its author the life-long soubriquet of Corsican Boswell. Brydone dedicated his account to William Beckford, responsible for the fashion of picturesque tours, who had initially suggested Brydone visit Sicily:

Boswell was born in Edinburgh, and educated at the universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Utrecht. Boswell was admitted to both the Scottish and English bars and practiced law but devoted himself primarily to the pursuit of a literary career. His most important early work was An Account of Corsica (1768), a sympathetic study of the struggle for independence of that island, written after an extended tour of Europe.
In 1763 Boswell met the writer Samuel Johnson, and from 1772 until Johnson's death in 1784 the two men were closely associated. In 1773 Boswell was admitted to Johnson's Literary Club, which included the statesman Edmund Burke , the writer Oliver Goldsmith , the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds , and the actor David Garrick . Thereafter, Boswell devoted much of his time to compiling detailed records of Johnson's activities and conversation. Boswell's accounts covered periods of daily association with Johnson in London and also described a trip that the two friends made through Scotland to the
