A Vision Of The Lost By William Booth (1829-1912) Return to Booth Page On one of my recent journeys, as I gazed from the coach window, I was led into a train of thought concerning the condition of the multitudes around me. They were living carelessly in the most open and shameless rebellion against God, without a thought for their eternal welfare. As I looked out of the window, I seemed to see them all . . . millions of people all around me given up to their drink and their pleasure, their dancing and their music, their business and their anxieties, their politics and their troubles. Ignorant - willfully ignorant in many cases - and in other instances knowing all about the truth and not caring at all. But all of them, the whole mass of them, sweeping on and up in their blasphemies and devilries to the Throne of God. While my mind was thus engaged, I had a vision. I saw a dark and stormy ocean. Over it the black clouds hung heavily; through them every now and then vivid lightening flashed and loud thunder rolled, while the winds moaned, and the waves rose and foamed, towered and broke, only to rise and foam, tower and break again. In that ocean I thought I saw myriads of poor human beings plunging and floating, shouting and shrieking, cursing and struggling and drowning; and as they cursed and screamed they rose and shrieked again, and then some sank to rise no more.

God's salesman
WILLIAM BOOTH was the most successful evangelist of the nineteenth century. In an age when travelling preachers counted their conversions - and used their weekly totals to advertise for new work - Booth certainly topped the performance league. And, although he never descended to such commercial practices himself, he took great pride in his unparalleled talent for saving souls. But his importance was the world he took as his parish. The poor were his natural congregation and, at least in his early days, the only people who listened to his sermons were the men and women to whom the Church would not reach out.
People have said that he poked his umbrella into the ground and talked to it, like a man mad, to attract a crowd. Others asserted that he was so striking in appearance, and eloquent in speech that he would not have needed such a device.
The General
William Booth was born in Nottingham in 1829 in the terraced house in Sneinton now preserved as No.12 Notintone Place. His father, Samuel Booth, a nail-maker by trade was unable to come to terms with the world of machines and mass production which had made him redundant. He tried to set up a number of building companies but recurring trade recessions ruined him. "Make money", he said to his son, and died a bankrupt. Booth's mother was stern and unaffectionate. Life for William and his four sisters was not easy.

Rasche Ausbreitung weltweit, in Deutschland 1886. In 103 Ländern arbeiten 16000 Gemeinden (Korps) und Vorposten sowie 9000 soziale Einrichtungen und Schulen, 25000 Geistliche (Offiziere)und etwa 3 Millionen Mitglieder. Offizielle Zeitschrift ist der "Kriegsruf". in Deutschland 47 Gemeinden (Korps) mit etwa 2000 Mitgliedern, 41 diakonische Einrichtungen, 133 ordinierte Geistliche (Offiziere) Aus der Selbstdarstellung der Heilsarmee zitieren wir: " Der Gründer der Heilsarmee, William Booth, wurde am 10. April 1829 in Nottingham (Mittelengland) geboren.

Back Close Window A Resolution
William Booth (1829-1912) In the 1840s a young Christian man found employment in a pawnshop.
Although he disliked the work he did it faithfully "as unto the Lord" until a more desirable opportunity opened for him to prepare himself for a life of Christian Service. He wrote on a scrap of paper the following resolutions:
"I do promise God that I will rise early every morning to have a few minutes – not less than five – in private prayer.
I will endeavour to conduct myself as a humble, meek and zealous follower of Jesus and by serious witness and warning I will try to lead others to think of the needs of their immortal souls.
I hereby vow to read no less than four chapters in God's Word every day.
I will cultivate a spirit of self-denial and will yield myself a prisoner of love to the Redeemer of the World" That young man was William Booth, who in 1878 formed the Salvation Army and later led thousands to Christ. The Salvation Army stands as a monument to his faithfulness in preparing himself each morning to serve the Lord. Begin your day with God and see what a difference it makes.

    William Booth (1829-1912)
William Booth, a young man who came to Christ in his teenage years. Through his face-to-face experiences with those in the grip of poverty, both in his home city of Nottingham, and later in London, coupled with a zeal and love for God, here was a young man who wanted to "make a difference" . After his marriage to Catherine, he felt drawn to the people who you would never see in a "respectable" church setting. The drunks, the prostitutes, the beggars and street people. While preaching outside a tavern in London (The Blind Beggar!!) some other Christian workers saw him and were impressed by the young man's zeal and authority while preaching. They invited Booth to lead some evangelistic meetings they were holding in a nearby tent. A ministry was born. He formed his own movement which he called 'The Christian Mission' . Slowly the mission began to grow but the work was hard and Booth would 'stumble home night after night haggard with fatigue, often his clothes were torn and bloody bandages swathed his head where a stone had struck', wrote his wife. Evening meetings were held in an old warehouse where urchins threw stones and fireworks through the window.
