Four Types of Bok
The word 'bok' can be interpreted in many ways. Below are four such examples.
  • Professor Bart Jan Bok (1906 - 1983) was a noted astronomer whose name has been immortalised with the Bok Globule . This is a small, dark cloud of stellar gas and dust which is in the process of condensing into one or more stars . Bok's work was dedicated to understanding and promoting the structure of the Milky Way. The Bok Tower in central Florida is the centre piece of a large expanse of carefully sculpted gardens. It is 205 feet tall and is also home to a 57-bell carillon . The gardens were developed by the Dutch writer and humanitarian Edward William Bok (1863 - 1930) who was a Pulitzer Prize winner and established the American Peace Award. The Bristol Orienteering Klub, England was formed in 1971. Its purpose has been to promote the activity of orienteering in the local area and it currently represents one of the largest clubs of its kind in the United Kingdom. It is a member club of the South West Orienteering Association A bok is a type of Chinese vegetable - more precisely Bok Choy . It looks like a cross between a stick of celery and a leek. It usually consists of several spoon -shaped, white stems with tightly clustered, dark green leaves at the top. It is available all year round in the Far East.

Recent Publications Cornelis A. van Minnen and Sylvia L. Hilton, eds., Nation on the Move: Mobility in U.S. History (Amsterdam: VU University Press, 2002), 177 pp. isbn 90-5383-839-2. This collection of essays explores different methodological approaches to mobility, the quintessential component of America's national mythology. Mobility has dominated the process of territorial, social and ideological construction of the United States. Modern historiography has also associated mobility with rootlessness, social alienation, and other negative aspects of American history. Giles Scott-Smith, The Politics of Apolitical Culture: The Congress for Cultural Freedom, The CIA and post-war American hegemony. PSA Political Studies Series 2 (London and New York: Routledge, 2002), 233 pp. isbn 0-415-24445-5. This book makes the provocative argument that the CIA served the real interests of European and American intellectuals and that members of the intellectual elite found a new role for themselves in forging an "Atlanticist" cultural consensus which served ultimately to entrench American political and economic hegemony over Western Europe. Surnames A to D Aleman
The family Aleman are descendants of Willem III, duke of Holland and Henegovia (1304-1337). This is proved in a very interesting article of Mr. T.N. Schelhaas in "CBG jaarboek 1980". The ancestors of Pieter Aleman lived for centuries in Ouddorp, in the province Zuid-Holland. GENERATION I I. Pieter Aleman * 15-9-1811 Ouddorp, son of Krijn Aleman and Niesje Leenders van Kadsand, † 11-5-1850 Texel, workman, x 22-9-1842 Texel Jannetje den Bleijker, * 5-8-1820 Ouddorp, daughter of Maarten Jansz den Bleijker and Baaltje van Dam.
Children:
1. Niesje * 5-11-1842 Texel, † 10-8-1868 De Koog, Texel, x 27-9-1866 Jacob Stark
2. Johannes * 18-1-1844 Texel, see IIa
3. Maarten * 4-9-1846 Texel, see IIb
4. Krijn * 8-4-1849 Texel, † 22-11-1851 Texel
5. Pieter * 25-6-1850 Texel, see IIc
When their youngest son was born, Pieter Aleman was already dead. So Jannetje den Bleijker decided to give the baby his father's first name. Jannetje moved to the Haarlemmermeer in December 1853 and remarried with Theunis Roest. She got one daughter from her second husband, named Baaltje Roest. At the end of 1855 she returned to Texel, where she decided lived in the village of De Koog. Although she was not married anymore, she gave birth to another daughter. Her youngest child Maartje den Bleijker was born on the 22th of June 1857, without any obstetric assistance at all. The lack of a midwife was so unusual, that it was written down in the birth certificate. But not a word about the father of the child.

[This item added to Web September, 1996.]
General Introduction
The creation of history as a scholarly discipline has always depended on the discovery, preservation, and accessibility of primary sources. Some of the leading figures in the first generation of academic historians in the United States spent much of their time and energy on this endeavor and in so doing made possible the work of their colleagues who wrote monographs and general histories. The inventions of microfilm and photocopying have vastly improved access to such sources. At any given time the prevailing conceptions of what is significant in the past will determine which sources are sought and valued. When politics and diplomacy are the center of historians' concern, government documents, treaties, newspapers, and correspondence of political leaders and diplomats will be collected and made accessible. When intellectual history is ascendant, the works of philosophers and reflective thinkers will be studied, analyzed, and discussed. Economic historians will look for records of trade, evidence of price fluctuations, conditions of labor, and other kinds of data originally collected for business purposes. The propensity of modern governments to collect statistics has made possible whole new fields for historical analysis.
