Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) can be ranked alongside Dante and Petrarca as one of the three great Italian literary figures of the 14th century who were also prominent on the European Scene. He can be distinguished from them, however by his greater concentration on earthly themes and subjects and his relative disinterest in moral, religious, theological and political issues. Boccaccio's greatest work is "The Decameron", a collection of 100 tales linked in a narrative framework, where he masterfully portrays different characters and their various passions, thus creating a vivacious image of life in all its many facets. può essere considerato insieme con Dante e Petrarca, il più importante scrittore del 14° secolo sia in Italia che in tutta Europa.

51. Glossary: Language & Literature
Boccaccio, Giovanni (13131375) A Florentine writer and humanist, Boccaciowas introduced to the study of Roman and Greek literature by Petrarch.
http://www.ucalgary.ca/applied_history/tutor/endmiddle/glossary/llgloss.html
Alighieri, Dante (1265-1321)
A Florentine much involved in politics, Dante was sent into exile in 1302 when his party (the Bianchi Guelphs) fell out of favour. He never returned to Florence, spending the rest of his life travelling throughout Italy and writing poems, political works and most notably the Divine Comedy . Written in the Italian vernacular, this epic poem is based on Virgil's Aeneid , a Roman work. It is expressive of medieval theology, Renaissance humanist interests and Dante's own views on human psychology and the contemporary political scene in Italy. Considered a literary masterpiece immediately, the language of the Comedy became the basis of a common Italian language that gave Tuscan a claim to primacy among the numerous spoken dialects. Beatrice
Dante met Beatrice in 1274 and, following her death, he collected a series of sonnets and verses that chronicled his love for her in La vita nuova (The New Life). Beatrice also appears in La divina commedia (The Divine Comedy). Many scholars believe that Beatrice was a Florentine noblewoman named Beatrice Portinari. Boccaccio, Giovanni (1313-1375)

How do people behave or feel toward one another? What may be the symbolic meaning of the plague and the social disorder which it brings about? May the plague be related in some way to the general cultural and social situation of European cities in the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance? What is the function of literature and storytelling in the general chaos brought about by the plague? Is there any possible symbolic meaning to the general format of 10 tales being told for 10 days? Does this arrangement take on any special significance in the context of the plague epidemic? Are other arts also represented in the entertainments chosen by the young people? Why? Does Boccaccio show some general attitude toward or understanding of the arts?
