T here are some stories that seem to exist as a given. The author becomes immaterial, the year in which the story was written, irrelevant. Style is secondary to impact — the tale survives the onslaught of time and the vagaries of taste to become a classic of the form. These early works represent the epistles that the bible of genre fiction has been constructed from. When an editor tells a writer, "It's been done before," it's quite likely that the editor is a devotee to that bible, able to quote chapter and verse from its holy content. 2003 Archive 2002 Archive 2001 Archive Death And The Woman by Gertrude Atherton March 2003 "She gave an exclamation of horror. Something was creeping over the window-sill. Her limbs palsied, but she struggled to her feet and looked back, her eyes dragged about against her own volition. Two small green stars glared menacingly at her just above the sill; then the cat possessing them leaped downward, and the stars disappeared." G ertrude Atherton (1857-1948), a noted feminist and author, wrote a series of historical novels about California, for which she is best known. She also wrote a number of effective horror stories that have seemingly slipped through the cracks of time, although she is in the process of being 'rediscovered' by readers of genre fiction.

Together with his sister, Agnes (1858-1945), founded the Girl Guides in 1910, the year in which he left the army. An anti-Semite, he was interested in Fascism and admired Mein Kampf . Text by Elizabeth Barret Browning (1806-1861)
Music by Edward Elgar How he sleepeth! Vision unto vision calleth,
While the young child dreameth on. Fair, O dreamer, thee befalleth With the glory thou hast won! Darker wert thou in the garden, Yestermorn, by summer sun. We should see the spirits rising Round thee, - were the clouds away. 'Tis the child-heart draws them, singing In the silent-seeming clay - Singing! - Stars that seem the mutest, Go in music, music all the day. Softly! softly! make no noises! Now he lieth still and dumb - Now he hears the angels' voices Folding silence in the room - Now he muses deep the meaning Of the Heav'nwords as they come. He is harmless - we are sinful, We are troubled - he at ease: From his slumber, virtue winful Floweth outward with increase - Dare not bless him! but be blesséd by his peace

The Necronomicon People called him crazy, but really, we should all be so crazy. Sure, if H. P. Lovecraft were living in the apartment next door, you might wonder about this quiet, dirt-poor, horse-faced outsider who spent his days writing hundred-page letters. Maybe you'd picture headlines like NEIGHBORS SAY KILLER WAS "STRANGE DUCK." But after all, we should expect a few peculiarities from the creator of the Cthulhu (kuh-THOO-loo) Mythos, the greatest hoard of horror fiction between Poe and Stephen King. If we had more strange ducks like H. P. Lovecraft, the books we read would be a lot stranger and more interesting. "Not more unutterable could have been the chaos of hellish sound if the pit itself had opened to release the agony of the damned, for in one inconceivable cacophony was centred all the supernal terror and unnatural despair of animate nature." "Herbert WestReanimator" (1921-22)
    THE CREATOR
Hearing about the early life of Howard Phillips Lovecraft (or, as his fans often call him, "HPL"), you might expect the worst. He was born in 1890 in Providence, RI. His father went crazy and died young, his mother was a clinging neurotic, and Howard grew up a reclusive and sickly boy in genteel poverty. He became an avowed and lifelong atheist by age 12 and got drummed out of Sunday school.

The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a magical order which flourished in England at the turn of the century, is one of the most influential organizations in recent history to have had an effect on western magical beliefs and practices. Much of its ritual has been published in readily-accessible form; yet there still remain many vagaries and uncertainties about the Order, not least with regard to its members.
Most accounts focus primarily on the principal figures who played a role in its founding and turbulent history, S. L. Mathers, Wynn Westcott, W. B. Yeats, A. E. Waite and Aleister Crowley. Of these men and their machinations in the sometimes bitter power-play which constituted so great a part of the Order’s history, so much has been written elsewhere that it would be pointless to discuss it in detail here. Instead, I want to try to clarify the possible connections of various writers of weird fiction whose names have been linked at one time or another with the Order of the Golden Dawn. Some of these indubitably were members of the Order; for others there is some evidence to suggest links, but no conclusive proof; and for several writers whose names have been put forward, there is little or no evidence at all.
