Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?)
Ambrose Bierce led an unhappy childhood in Ohio and left home as a bitter and pessimistic young man. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Bierce joined the Union Army; he later brought his military experience vividly to life in some of his best stories. Bierce moved to San Francisco after the war and embarked on a career as a journalist. His "Prattler" column, originally printed in the Argonaut and then the Wasp , was picked up by William Randolph Hearst's San Francisco Sunday Examiner in 1886 and provided Bierce with an excellent outlet for his biting wit and many of his most famous short stories. After divorcing his wife in 1891 and losing one son in a gunfight and the other to alcoholism, Bierce disappeared in Mexico in 1913, where legend says he was killed in the revolutionary war. His works include Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (1891; later retitled

Cynicism
Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed- interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing you last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?
A total abstainer is one who abstains from everything but abstention,
and especially from inactivity in the affairs of others.

But when you and your 12 siblings are all given names beginning with the letter 'A', you tend to see things differently. Ambrose Gwinett Bierce (1842-1914?) was a veteran of the American Civil War (serving for the DamnYankees ). Yet the horrors of war dulled not his wit or sense of humor. Nor did the bullet lodged within his skull behind his left ear - a souvenir of the a battle at Kenesaw Mountain. If anything the war intensified his scrutiny of all life's pleases and travails, and he made one see like the other. After the war, Bierce settled in San Francisco, a city known to proof cynics alongside of sourdough (which explain part of your humble editor's disposition). From there Bierce exploited the writing trades as a satirist, short-story writer, and journalist. From San Francisco, he journeyed to London in 1872, finding even more fertile ground to spread the cynics seed.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Ambrose Gwinett Bierce (1842-1914) "Bitter Bierce" - American newspaper columnist, satirist, essayist, short-story writer, and novelist, an enigmatic figure, who disappeared in the Mexican Revolution. His end is still a mystery, but he is presumed to have died in the siege of Ojinega on 11 January 1914. Bierce is best-known for his numerous short stories collected in TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS (1891), which show the influence of Edgar Allan Poe. However, Bierce himself was annoyed by comparisons, and as a literary critic he was against realism. When Stephen Crane published his novel about the Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage , Bierce wrote: "I had thought there could be only two worse writers than Stephen Crane, namely, two Stephen Cranes." "John Searing, a man of courage, the formidable enemy, the strong, resolute warrior, was as pale as a ghost. His jaw was fallen; his eyes protruded; he trembled in every fibre; a cold sweat bathed his entire body; he screamed with fear. He was not insane - he was terrified." (from 'One of the Missing') Ambrose Bierce was born in Meigs County, Ohio, as the tenth of thirteen children of Marcus and Laura Bierce. Each of the children was given a name beginning with the letter "A." Bierce's father had a large private library, and he spent much time with the books - his name Marcus Aurelius was given after the famous Roman emperor. Bierce grew up on a farm in northern Indiana. Later, in his parody of 'The Old Oaken Bucket', Bierce wrote about his early years:

Bierce, Ambrose (Gwinett) (1842 - 1914?)
