Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce, 1842-1914?
BIERCE, AMBROSE GWINNETT, a notable literary figure in post Civil War America, acquired much of the inspiration for his cynical outlook on life while serving as a Union soldier in an Indiana regiment. The 10th child in a poor-but-proud farm family, Bierce was born on June 24, 1842, in Meigs County, Ohiothe family relocating to Kosciusko County in northern Indiana when Ambrose was four years old. A sullen, bookish child who was afflicted with asthma, he rebelled against helping out on the family farm. At age 15, he moved to nearby Warsaw and apprenticed as a printer's devil of the abolitionist newspaper "Northern Indianan," whose editor Reuben Williams later served as Colonel of the Indiana, during the war. At the behest of prosperous Uncle Lucius Bierce, Ambrose attended Kentucky Military Institute during the 1859-60 school year, where he honed an already-apparent aptitude as a draftsman into the specialized area of cartography. When war erupted in 1861, Bierce was working as clerk in an Elkhart store and he promptly enlisted in Company C of the The Devil's Dictionary

The New Decalogue
by Ambrose Bierce
Have but one God: thy knees were sore
If bent in prayer to three or four. Adore no images save those
The coinage of thy country shows. Take not the Name in vain. Direct
Thy swearing unto some effect. Thy hand from Sunday work be held
Work not at all unless compelled. Honor thy parents, and perchance
Their wills thy fortunes may advance. Kill notdeath liberates thy foe
From persecution's constant woe. Kiss not thy neighbor's wife. Of course
There's no objection to divorce. To steal were folly, for 'tis plain
In cheating there is greater pain. Bear not false witness. Shake your head
And say that you have "heard it said." Who stays to covet ne'er will catch An opportunity to snatch. Our Services Translation Transcription Interpreting Conference Services ... Litigation Support Search Our Site-

Thou shalt no God but me adore:
Twere too expensive to have more. No images nor idols make
For Roger Ingersoll to break. Take not God's name in vain: select
A time when it will have effect. Work not on Sabbath days at all,
But go to see the teams play ball. Honor thy parents. That creates
For life insurance lower rates. Kill not, abet not those who kill;
Thou shalt not pay thy butcher's bill. Kiss not thy neighbor's wife, unless
Thine own thy neighbor doth caress. Don't steal; thou'lt never thus compete
Successfully in business. Cheat. Bear not false witnessthat is low

Amborse Bierce

"Death is not the end," wrote Ambrose Bierce, "there remains litigation over the estate." "Bitter Bierce," as he was often called, was an unapologetic misanthrope who loathed humanity and took pleasure in deflating every inspiring myth or optimistic sentiment with a sharp comment. After serving in the Civil War and seeing up close the depths to which man could sink he became a journalist in San Francisco infamous for cutting one-liners and put-downs. In October 1913, at the age of seventy-one, Bierce decided to quit the United States and observe the Pancho Villa revolution in Mexico. Before leaving, he wrote the following letter to his niece Lora ("Carlt" is her husband, Carlton.)
Ambrose Bierce Bids Farewell to his Niece Lora
"Civilization be dinged! It is the mountains and the desert for me."
Dear Lora, I go away tomorrow for a long time, so this is only to say good-bye. I think there is nothing else worth saying; therefore you will naturally expect a long letter. What an intolerable world this would be if we said nothing but what is worth saying! And did nothing foolish like going into Mexico and South America. I'm hoping that you will go to the mine soon. You must hunger and thirst for the mountains Carlt likewise. So do I. Civilization be dinged! It is the mountains and the desert for me.

Ambrose Bierce was the author of supernatural stories that have secured his place in both the weird tradition and in American letters at large. The stories in his two primary volumes, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (a.k.a., In the Midst of Life, 1892) and Can Such Things Be? (1893) often added a Western setting to Gothic fiction and, more importantly, developed the psychological aspects of horror first recognized by Poe.
He is also noted for his tales of the Civil War, which drew on his own experience as a Union cartographer and officer. His first job in journalism was as editor for the San Francisco News-Letter and California Advertiser (1868-72), writing the entries of the "Town Crier" which constituted the first real newspaper column. Perhaps we can his true love was satire in any form whether ghost story or fable, newspaper column or lyrical lambaste, fantasy or pseudo-lexicography.
In time, Bierce established himself a kind of literary dictator of the West Coast and was so respected and feared as a critic that his judgement could "make or break" an aspiring author's reputation. Well-known by his mere initials, A.G.B., his enemies and detractors called him "Almighty God Bierce." He was also nicknamed "Bitter Bierce," and his nihilistic motto was "Nothing matters." Apart from a few well-anthologized ghost stories (notably, "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge"), Bierce is best remembered for his cynical but humourous Devil's Dictionary.
