The Benson
(Formally Old Vicarage Hotel)
Relaxation, comfort and good food in the very heart of historic Rye
Benson Hotel provides comfortable, relaxing accommodation in an elegant building at the very heart of historic Rye. Situated in a quiet road just off the High Street, the hotel's central location makes it the ideal base - whether you plan a weekend winding down, or an active outdoor break on Kent's famous coast and atmospheric marshes. Benson's sumptuously-appointed bedrooms (most with four-posters) combine old-fashioned cosiness with modern comforts and conveniences. All have en-suite bathrooms, colour television, direct-dial telephones and a tea and coffee tray. The hotel was built nearly three centuries ago as a home for a wealthy wool-merchant. At the end of the 19th century it became the vicarage for St. Mary's, the delightful Norman church that stands just around the corner. Conversion to an hotel - The Old Vicarage - followed in 1976. The present owners changed the name to Benson Hotel in honour of E.F.Benson (1867-1940), mayor of Rye and celebrated writer. Benson immortalised Rye as 'Tilling', the setting for six hugely popular novels. TV dramatisations brought the book's characters, Mapp and Lucia, to an even wider audience. At the back of the hotel, the lounge and adjoining terrace offer spectacular views across the leafy garden to the River Rother and Romney marsh. Here you can have a quiet drink before you go out to dinner to one of the eighteen restaurants and pubs within easy walking distance of the hotel. Here you can while away the afternoon slumped deep in an armchair with your nose in a book.

Indeed a number of these large horror anthologies were published in the 30s, collecting much of the best British (and some American), horror, mystery and thriller fiction of the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras. Hutchinson, for example, published the massive (1000+ pages) The Evening Standard Book of Strange Stories A Century of Creepy Stories , and A Century of Ghost Stories . Montague Summers edited his famous The Supernatural Omnibus (1931), Dorothy L. Sayers her Great Short Stories of Detection Mystery and Horror , and John Gawsworth his Creeps series. What can I say, they don't write them like they used to. list of authors gives one a good idea of the quality of the writers presented. Even so, there are some stories by lesser known authors which are also very good. My personal favourite, A.J. Alan's "The Diver," a tale of a haunted diving board at the pool in a men's club, isn't particularly atmospheric or well written, but is interesting for its unique venue and the skeptical character who tells it. There are tales of Voodoo (W.B.Seabrook's "Goat-cry, Girl-cry"), horror at sea (W.H. Hodgson's "The Voice in the Knight"), detection (R. Austin Freeman's early Dr. Thorndyke tale "The Aluminium Dagger" and Baroness Orczy's

Inadvertent Doggerel
[ Issue 5 ]
Inadvertent Doggerel
Tony Rogers' Inadvertent Doggerel is a celebration of a particular feature of Victorian literature — accidental trash poetry. Included are examples from the pen of the heroic William McGonagall, together with a couple of blunders from a lesser Poet Laureate (Alfred Austin), and even something awkward from the great Francis Thompson. The Victorian era seems to have been peculiarly prone to fits of unconscious bad verse composition Print This Issue

Inadvertent Doggerel — Tony Rogers
Ever since that suggestion on the front page of Issue 3 , Bikwilians everywhere have rallied to the cause of de-closeting and dusting off the hopeless rhymes of their youth and at last getting them into print, even if (or, more like it, mainly because) they discharge this heavy duty anonymously. All well and good, but there is, you know, another type of doggerel already in print: the accidental sort.
Readers will need little introduction to the excruciating verse of Scottish handloom weaver William McGonagall (1830-1902). He used to sign himself “Wm. McGonagall, Poet and Tragedian”, but history knows him better as “the world’s worst poet”, or at least as

STAFF PICKS DECEMBER 2001 Murder carries a torch : a Southern sisters mystery George, Anne.
Deliciously funny story of two sleuthing sisters in their 60's,who live in Birmingham, Al. Great local color and character descriptions. There are more southern sister mysteries as well. Dune Herbert, Frank.
An absolutely enthralling creation and still the ultimate sci-fi novel. If you enjoy sci-fi/fantasy, it is a must! If you've already read it, it is worth re-reading. Very enjoyable the 2nd time. The sacred world of the Celts : an illustrated guide to Celtic spirit Pennick, Nigel.
It is a light read loaded with illustrations. The information is basically good and it provides a
nice introduction to the Celtic world. Midnight Bayou Roberts, Nora.
It is fun to read about the architecture, gardens and customs of New Orleans as a background for a light romance. There is also a family mystery and even some ghosts. Prodigal summer : a novel Kingsolver, Barbara.

15 East Street, Rye, East Sussex TN31 7JY Tel: 01797 225131 Fax: 01797 225512 Set in the heart of the historic town of Rye, The Benson is a smart, three storey brick building. It started life as a home for a wealthy wool-merchant nearly three hundred years ago, before becoming a vicarage and then a hotel in 1976. Present owners, Peter and Valerie Sumner changed the name to Benson Hotel in honour of EF Benson (1867-1940), mayor of Rye and celebrated writer, whose characters included the now famous, Mapp and Lucia. The house is elegantly furnished, but its main appeal is as a base to explore the area. Mid-week walking breaks are popular, and the Sumners provide maps and book guides if required. Rye lies at the heart of Romney Marsh a haven for wildlife and a maze of walking paths. The cobbled streets and quiet winding passages of the town itself are crammed with history, including a castle, a monastery, a 12 th century church and several olde worlde inns. Once surrounded by the sea, Rye was one of the cinque ports an ancient federation of the most important towns on England's southeast coast, and apart from the lack of water nowadays, Rye has scarcely changed since. The beautiful beach of Camber Sands is close by, and the fishing port of Hastings, Canterbury and the old spa town of Tunbridge Wells are all within easy striking distance for pleasant day trips.

It's not just about dressing up, but it's about a complete way of life. From Beau Brummel to Andy Warhol, the dandy is someone who has made a religion of himself and turned his life into a work of art. This little compendium of quotes and commentaries takes a humorous glance at the whole history of the dandy and his excesses: Restoration fops (Lord Rochester and Sir Fopling Flutter), Regency bucks (Brummell's outrageous contemporaries like Poodle Byng and Romeo Coates), 19th Century Bohemians and Decadents to the Edwardians and the Bright Young Things of the 1920sthe dandy was the godfather of pop style and insouciant attitude.
