Ludwig van Beethoven Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 17, 1770 in Bonn, in the Rhineland of Germany. He lived in Vienna from 1792 until his death. Beethoven's Father and Grandfather were court musicians. Ludwig carried on the family tradition in exemplary form, becoming one of history's greatest composers. Beethoven's dynamic musical style infused his compositions with his confidence in human action. Again and again dissonance and turmoil are resolved with enthusiasm and rejoicing. Fate is trampled by triumphant music. Turbulence in his personal life, including his becoming incurably deaf at 29, tested his optimism. He surmounted his difficulties through a rigorous regime of composition. In his later career his music was even more free and imaginative. On his deathbed Beethoven was planning a tenth symphony, a composer to the very end. Despite his notoriously brusque manner, Beethoven was revered by Viennese society as its greatest celebrity. His funeral was attended by 20,000 friends and admirers. If you are aware of books, movies, databases, web sites or other information sources about

Beethoven, Ludwig van
Return to Great Composers Return to Grand Catalog Born in Bonn in 1770, the eldest son of a singer in the Kapelle of the Archbishop- Elector of Cologne and grandson of the Archbishop's Kapellmeister, Beethoven moved in 1792 to Vienna, where he had some lessons from Haydn and others, quickly establishing himself as a remarkable keyboard-player and original composer. By 1815 increasing deafness made public performance impossible and accentuated existing eccentricities of character, patiently tolerated by a series of rich patrons and his royal pupil the Archduke Rudolph. Beethoven did much to enlarge the possibilities of music and widen the horizons of later generations of composers. To his contemporaries he was sometimes a controversial figure, making heavy demands on listeners both by the length and by the complexity of his writing, as he explored new fields of music.

In his own words...

"I carry my thoughts about with me for a long time... before writing them down... once I have grasped a theme. I shall not forget it even years later. I change many things, discard others, and try again and again until I am satisfied; then, in my head... [the work] rises, it grows, I hear and see the image n front of me from every angle... and only the labor of writing it down remains... I turn my ideas into tones that resound, roar, and rage until at last they stand before me in the form of notes." German composer. Often considered a transitional figure from the Classical to the Romantic era.
Ludwig van Beethoven is often described by musicians as a "giant straddling two styles": the Classical and the Romantic. Indeed, it is a testimony to Beethoven's place in history that he is claimed for both periods. Whether Beethoven was a Classical or a Romantic composer, however, is beside the point. Instead, we might best view him as a new composer for a new age an age that is reflected in both musical as well as the nonmusical worlds.
Haydn
and Mozart lived during a time of nascent ideals of liberty and two major revolutions. They also lived in a world of royal patronage, in which Haydn flourished but Mozart floundered. In contrast, Beethoven came of age as an artist when the consequences of revolutions had to be confronted and when the burden of patronage had already shifted to the less reliable mechanisms of the commercial sphere: publications and concerts proceeds, supplemented by sporadic noble patronage. It was a far more disorderly world for Beethoven, yet one full of exciting potential.

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn to Johann van Beethoven, a court musician and tenor singer. As the second-oldest child, his father instilled in him the ambition of being a child prodigy, and he gave his first public performance as a pianist at the age of eight. By 1787 Beethoven was employed as a musician in Bonn court orchestra, and was granted a leave of absence in the early part of the year to study in Vienna under Mozart. Beethoven had barely arrived in Vienna when he was summoned back to Bonn to his dying mother. After his mother’s death, Beethoven looked after his family and supported them for four years. In 1792 he returned to Vienna and took lessons from Haydn, Albrechtsberger, Schenck, and Salieri. By 1975 he was a well-known pianist, admired for his brilliant improvisations. He met many influential people at this time, particularly amongst the aristocracy. They offered Beethoven their patronage, and the composer dedicated his works to them in return. By 1809 his patrons provided him with an annuity that enabled him to live as a freelance composer without financial worries. During this time Beethoven also helped pave the way for the modern concert grand piano. He was acutely interested in the development of the piano and kept close contact with leading piano building firms in Vienna and London.

Why Beethoven?
Through the years I have tired of modern music while running and have learned to appreciate the classics. My favorite, bar none, are the works of Beethoven. His Ninth Symphony is to me his crowning achievement. All I can say is get a CD with his Ninth on it and listen, then decide for yourself. If you have a decent midi player, like a Soundblaster AWE32 or Live!, try this midi file , it's one of the better versions of the Ninth that I've found. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, you should be hearing it at this time. Again, it sounds quite acceptable is you have a wave table sound card. The Classical Music Net has all sorts of information on Beethoven and other composers.
  • The Movie
Presently there is a movie about Beethoven in circulation called "Immortal Beloved". Beethoven was no saint, but you can't help but reach out for the man in this movie. If you like Beethoven's music, you must see this movie. The movie has already been released to video.
  • Beethoven The Person
    • Early Life
Beethoven was born in the provincial court city of Bonn, Germany, probably on Dec. 16, 1770. His grandfather, also Ludwig, and his father, Johann, were both musicians in the service of, successively, the prince electors Max Friedrich and Max Franz. Beethoven's own talent was such that at the age of 12 he was already an assistant to the organist Christian Gottlob Neefe, with whom he studied. Attempts to establish him as a prodigy in the mold of Mozart had little success, however.
